An elementary school class picture is causing quite a stir after the photographer Photoshopped a cartoon smiley face over a boy's head.

David Claussen, owner of Broward County Pictures, took the photo of the second grade class at Sawgrass Elementary school, but was notified afterward that two of the students hadn't signed consent forms and needed to be removed.

The local news reports:

"Claussen said he was able to use the photo editing software Adobe Photoshop to lift one of the kids out, but had explained to them that there was a problem with the second student. He was sitting in the front row, right in the middle ... He said he would have gladly come out there to reshoot the image. Instead there was talk about putting a star over his face and then, he said, the P.T.A. asked him to place a smiley face."

My question is, why'd they take the picture if the kids couldn't be in it?

The photographer probably had assurances from school officials that all the kids had signed the necessary release consent forms. What seems likely is that the kids went home and told their parents it was picture day, and the parents decided after the fact they didn't want their kid in the photo (after likely ignoring the letters the school sent home relating to such matters). That, or the school just messed up by allowing the kid to sit for the photo when they knew (but didn't double-check) that the kids' parents didn't want them photographed.

Remember the good ole days when you went to school, had a class photo taken and mom and dad DIDN'T NEED TO SIGN A CONSENT FORM. :ohbrother: Unbelievable.

By the same token, remember the good 'ol days when you didn't hear stories about pedophiles stalking the schools and using pictures of kids in the newspaper and other mediums to get their jollies off, or to get ideas for their next target? Oh, wait, those guys were around then, too.

Same here. Don't find it offensive because looking at the boy's hands, I see where the photog is coming from. But there is something I don't like about it. Maybe inappropriate is the better word, or even unacceptable. Then it doesn't make news.
