That is absolutely ridiculous on so many levels.

Is that seriously the reason that schools give for requiring parental consent?

Unfortunately that is the world we live in today. A few years ago one of the Cincy TV station morning shows, I think it was Ch 12, used to give birthday wishes with first and last names, until there was an incident with one kid, now they just give the first names.

A longtime co-worker and track each other down several times a week to share our latest work "Seinfeldisms." One time during a meeting, after a particularly great idea that I shared, I stood up and said, "That's it! You've all been great! I'm outta here!"

We were at our in service days at school and our superintendent talked for a couple of minutes. Then the next administrator was talking and referred back to our superintendent was gone. I said to the guy next to me, "he left on a high note".

Not just sexual predators. In many cases, the non-custodial parent doesn't know where the child attends school for one reason or another.

It only seems ridiculous until you look deeper into individual situations.

There are laws that protect the rights of parents in sharing of any identifying information about their child. There may be a variety of reasons why a parent does not want a photograph or other information about their child released. I gave you a worst case scenario, but there are many others.

Why do parents have to sign a consent form for picture day? Honestly, this is the first time I've ever heard of that.

This is likely required to protect the photographer. Since the yearbook is a sold item and the photographer probably got paid this keeps someone from saying the school or photographer are profiting illegally from using their kids image.

The consents also usually allow the photographer and/or school to use the image(s) in things other than the yearbook and this grants consent to allow them to use the image for other things.

At our school, they now have 2 photo days. One in the fall and one in the spring. We do not get a permission form but get sent home a date for picture day and then when the pictures come in, we get a bill to pay or we don't get pictures. Not once have I signed a permission slip to have my kids pictures taken.

Schools sell their yearbooks to the students now?

You got them for free at your school?

I don't recall ever paying for a yearbook.

But then again, I never even bothered to pick up my senior yearbook.

I believe we always paid for ours. Didn't get my senior yearbook either though.

Hmmm … the term "cake-eater" keeps popping into my head. :D
