Your exactly right. It is refreshing when a parent comes in and tells you to do whatever you need to get their child to perform.

Every school year, when we meet with our kids' teacher at the beginning (yes we do that) we tell the teacher with our kid present that they have total control of their classroom and we will respect that and will not interfere. We stress that they have our permission to punish our child if the child deserves it. We tell them that if there is a problem, please let us know directly so that we will be informed and we can add any necessary "incentive" to get the child to fall into line. We tell them that we will not be "those parents" who blame the teacher and believe every word out of the mouths of our kids because we know they are not angels and we expect they will screw up from time to time. And when they do, we want them to have consequences.

 

So far, our communications with the teachers have been positive and our kids know that they will be expected to behave and mommy and daddy will not be running to their rescue.

Same, my grades were a true reflection of my own slacking off and they knew it. :lol:

Although in my defense, those "vocational aptitude" tests that were popular back in the day said I was best suited to be an underachiever.

Mr. Stanley's paddle (5th and 8th grade) was only a foot or so long, but split down the middle. That sucker would pinch the crap out of you on top of the whack.

 

Then I'd get home and get some more.

I was and my self esteem was so devastated from it, I had to appear on an Oprah, Dr Phil, Dr Oz, AND a Rikki Lake show to have it rebuilt.

Not quite 50 yet but I had a few in my day.

 

I will say, though, that I do not think it's good practice for teachers to paddle. In today's world it leads to way too many distractions and issues.

I forgot to mention it was about 2" thick and had holes in it either to let the steam thru or for aerodynamics!

Well, to be honest, I'm glad I grew up with the paddling. It did get my attention. If I had grown up in the mamby-pamby style discipline of today, I wouldn't have turned out the way I have.
