article Class 6A Notebook 9/4: Seven unbeatens remain and real challenges for top teams

Class 6A is down to 7 unbeaten squads after three weeks of play. Trinity, Saint Xavier, Pleasure Ridge Park, Male, Scott County, Simon Kenton, and unranked Ohio County. One of these teams will go down as Male and Trinity get it on. Scott County will have their hands full with Moeller (OH). Ohio County’s lack of strength in their schedule is keeping them out of the rankings.

Last week, the BluegrassPreps membership voted on 8 games involving 6A ranked teams. The masses were correct in choosing #12 Ryle over Boone County; #9 Butler over 4A Western; #7 Pleasure Ridge Park over Eastern; #6 Simon Kenton over #10 Conner; #4 Scott County over 5A #11 Highlands; #3 Male over 5A Doss; #2 Saint Xavier over 5A #2 Bowling Green; #1 Trinity over Moeller (OH).

This week, the nine 6A games we requested predictions for include(current BGP ranking noted)#12 Conner at 4A Scott; #7 Butler vs. 5A #4 Fern Creek; #8 Manual vs 4A Western; #13 Lafayette vs. Douglass; #6 Simon Kenton vs 5A Dixie Heights; #3 Pleasure Ridge Park vs. North Hardin; #5 Scott County vs. Moeller (OH); #4 Male vs. #1 Trinity; #2 Saint Xavier vs. 4A Fairdale.

Some luster fell off the Simon Kenton vs. Dixie Heights game. The Colonels lost at Milford (OH) 49-0 on Saturday night. This is still an exciting northern Kentucky matchup and a pride game between 6A vs. 5A teams. These teams played 12 times from 2007-2016 with Simon Kenton victorious in 7 of the contests. The two shared the same class for 6 of these seasons. They met in the 6A playoffs twice with the Pioneers winning 31-19 in 2013 and the Colonels turning the tables 24-0 in 2014. Currently Dixie Heights was in 5A the other 6 seasons.

Trinity plays at Male and tries to extend the current state’s best winning streak to 19. This will be an entertaining game and emotions will run high between these old rivals. This series started in 1957 with a 0-0 tie. Male won the next ten games in the old AAA. Trinity took their first victory in 1968 14-0 and went on to earn their first state football championship. The Rocks currently lead the all-time series 22-17-2. The second tie occurred in 1971. Ironically this was also a scoreless game.

Scott County hosts Moeller (OH) in another top 6A game this week.

The Cardinals played three games against out of state opponents since 2006. Scott County defeated Woodward (OH) 57-28 on 8/25/06. The Cardinals played at The Pit versus the Elder (OH) Panthers 9/11/15 losing 35-17. On 9/9/16, Elder (OH) defeated Scott County in Georgetown 20-14.

Currently, Scott County is unbeaten at 3-0 with wins over North Bullitt, Lafayette, and Highlands by a combined score of 158 to 60. Senior Josh Davis is the Cardinals signal caller this season. Davis has completed 11 of 15 pass attempts for 296 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Cardinals leading rusher is Brice Fryman. The senior has carried the ball 29 times for 399 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Junior QB Miles McBride leads the Crusaders. He torched Trinity’s defense for 277 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. McBride also rushed 21 yards and one touchdown. Junior R J Khayo recorded 8 receptions for 93 yards and one touchdown. Seniors Jack McCracken and Eric Wills caught the other two TD passes and had 65 and 63 receiving yards respectfully.

Campbell County is the newest team in the others to watch category. At 2-1, the Camels own victories over 5A Dixie Heights 27-23 and 2A #6 Newport Central Catholic 35-7. 5A #9 Highlands beat the visiting Camels 27-20 on August 25. Campbell County faces fellow 6A Cooper on the road this week. Cooper’s three losses have come at the hands of Highlands (42-22), Newport Central Catholic (29-7), and most recently 5A #1 Covington Catholic (41-0). The Camels may break into the BluegrassPreps Class 6A Top Ten with a triumph versus the Jaguars.
