Mason Co. vs. Bishop Brossart 02/07 Predications Senior Night
How much were they playing in those grades? Were they subs or were they starting varsity games? If they were subs, can anyone remember how much varsity time they were getting per game (on average)?

10th Region Freshmen Tournament
Shortage of girls...small school, to name two reasons. To clarify, Mosler would start for JV and sub for varsity. That's not so unusual, I see a lot of JV players come back out and sub for varsity. And since freshmen games are scheduled on different days than JV and varsity, she could also play in those games. There are only 15 or 16 girls on the St. Pat team from 8th grade through senior.

10th Region Freshmen Tournament
I was told she has a broken hand. I assume she will not be playing.

Best P. A. person?
Sonny Crockett....you are so right!!!!!!! I was there for a game and was wishing I brought ear-plugs. I also didn't need him to explain after every "jump-ball" why the ball was being given to the team it was being given to......."due to the alternate possession rule Campbell County will in-bounds the ball". I think most people understand the purpose of the possession arrow with out being told over and over during the game. Maybe it was just because it was so loud I didn't want him to say any more than he absolutely had to.

10th Region Freshmen Tournament
St. Patrick only has three freshmen on the team, but the three that play are the only freshmen girls that play ball. The rest of the team are 8th graders and possibly 7th graders. I wonder how many schools there are that have been playing their Freshmen up on other teams that will bring them back down to play in the tournament this weekend to have a stronger team? As far as I know, there is no rule that says they can't, or is there?

How Often Does This Happen?
Can't blame who for what they are doing? I was lead to believe that St. Pat didn't want to schedule Mason. Was that the case or did Mason not want to schedule these teams? And if this is the case, was it the decision of other teams in the distrct to not schedule Mason? I don't think opponents thought it was much fun being demolished, either.:irked: At some of the the games I attended in past years, even when Mason was "destroying their rivals" their varsity players were still getting plenty of playing time, not giving the other team much of a break.

Surprise
In the 30's 40's and 50's EVERY school was small. They were all communtiy schools. Kids were not bussed across the county nor did parents drive their kids miles to school. In Mason County alone there was Orangeburg School, Mayslick School, Washington School, Lewisburg School, Minerva School. In the 60's they built one large high school for all kids to bussed to. Maybe that's why the small schools quit winng the tournaments after the 50's, most of them were consolidated. Even Maysville HS has conslidated with Mason. That's the main reason you don't see these small schools winning the tournaments. There are so few left. Now there are mostly large county schools. If a person wants their child in a school where there is a smaller environment and more individual attention, the only choice is usually private school.

Mason County 81 St. Patrick 59
That's what I was told (about Mosler). I thought I remembered that name, Katelyn Smith from the Mason vs. Ripley back in November. Are you sure she didn't start that game?

Mason County 81 St. Patrick 59
Who is she/what grade? Did she play Jr. high at MC?
-
Mason County 81 St. Patrick 59
I wasn't trying to blame anyone. I was just saying that the caller to the LI was concerned the MC subs not getting playing time and about the MC starters risking being injured. I was just remarking that an SP sub got injured by a MC sub so SP (in hindsight) would have probably preferred that the MC starters stayed in the game. Just A comment. Not blaming anyone, it happened and is unfortunate. I thought this conversation was more about the subs playing. I brought up Mosler again to agree with the response by Shamrock fan to sumroyal that Mosler was a freshman so it wasn't as if SP was playing a Senior against the MC subs who were aparrantly, according to sumroyal are freshmen and 8th graders.

Mason County 81 St. Patrick 59
Mosler is a freshman, and she is a sub. If she is more talented than Mason's subs, then what of it. Chambers was more talented a a freshman that most other freshmen, did that mean she shouldn't have played agianst other freshmen? I really don't get the point. And if a team loses the momentun of it's starters because they were on the bench, then that's their problem, not the other team's. Are you saying the losing team shouldn't try to capitalize on that? If the losing team just quits trying because they are down 30 points, then what are the second five on the other team going to gain from that? Sure they are getting varsity playing time, but if they are not being challenged, what are they learning from their time in the game? To me it is win-win. The losing team gets a chance to cut the lead and the winning teams subs get to actually get challenged on the floor and have to defend their lead. And it wasn't like it was all St. Pats starters on the floor that they were having to play. St. Pat had subs in, too.

Mason County 81 St. Patrick 59
I think whenever you are up in a game and you put your subs you should expect that the losing team is going to try to capitalize on that. You really can't expect a team to just roll over and play dead because they are losing. I don't think you can blame a team for trying cut into their opponents lead. And if they cut into the lead to the point that they are a threat, then the coach of the winning team can always put their starters back in.

St. Patrick @ A-Town prediction 2/1
Does it seem like St. Pat, Augusta, and Deming are all caught in some kind of Bermuda Triangle. Seems like they all just keep playing eachother?

Mason County 81 St. Patrick 59
I read a comment in Thursday's Ledger Independent comment line about Mason Co. being 30 points up and still playing their seniors. The caller was worried about MC possibly having a starter injured while playing when they were so far ahead and didn't need to be playing. Mason did put the bench in, with enough time left to foul a St. Pat player with enough force to cause a season ending injury for the SP player. Brooke Mosler, a freshman off the bench, and high scorer in that game for St. Pat, has a broken hand from what I have been told.

Did Mason have a feshmen game last night, also? I noticed a couple of players missing that I had seen at games early in the season and I know one was a freshman. Someone said they thought there was a freshmen game last night.

Seniors verses Underclassmen
I say if you give your upperclassmen the chance each game and if they aren't getting the job done, you put in your younger players. I would be upset if my senior had more experience than the freshman player but never got the chance to play. There are nights when a player is "cold". You can't keep that "cold" player out there just because they are a senior and you don't want the player or their parents to get upset if you put a younger player in the game and take the senior out, especially when the senior can't buy a basket and the freshmen can't miss one. I have seen parents of players complain after a game even when their senior played over half the game and had only two points after at least 8 attempts (and some of those shots were un-contested lay-ups), and the freshman played less than half and scored over 20 points. To me that parent is being selfish and isn't thinking about the team, only their child. When a team loses a game they lose confidence in themselves as a team and when a player or parent can't accept the fact that the team did better with the freshman playing, then they are not thinking about the other players on the team. That is wrong. They play as a team, win as a team, lose as a team! There is no I in team, but there is a ME, and players and parents need to get away from that. I am the first one at a game when my child is playing badly, i.e. missing easy shots, taking stupid shots, and turning the ball over, to ask "why doesn't the coach take my child out?" Because if my child isn't playing well, then my child is hurting the team.

St. Pat vs. Augusta Updates
St. Patrick 75 Augusta 52 2.34 minutes left in the fourth

St. Patricks 67 Deming 64
Not a good thought....IMOM. Third time was a charm, fourth time was enough! Were you at the game? If so, what did you think of the T on Mason? I didn't see him do anything after the initial call that looked like it was deserving of a technical foul, but maybe I missed something. I thought maybe he said something to the ref, but someone told me they thought it was just because he made a face.
-
St. Patricks 67 Deming 64
St. Pat was really off in the first half of this game. They seemed to penetrate the defense but their shots were not falling. They managed to keep Demings lead from growing in the third, and dominated the fourth. This being said, I think they should do better for the rest of the tournament. Hopefully the Saints had their "off" night for the week and will pull together and do better for the remainder of the tournament. Not to take anything away from Deming, they played an excellent game, I think they just ran out of steam and as a result made some turnovers that did them in in the fourth. It was an exciting game, well worth the price of admission.

What needs to happen in both girls & boys basketball to make it a better game.
I agree that fundamentals aren't being taught in the lower grades. I also feel that if refs would call the fouls on the teams that are more physical , they would have to change their style of play and actually play the game the way it was intended to be played. The sad part is that the teams that actually play ball have to resort to playing dirty to stay in the game. The way to get this changed is for refs to be more diligent in calling the fouls that need to be called and making a team play clean. I know it is a lot to ask of the refs because at this point many teams are out of control when it comes to roughing up the other team and it is going to be a hard habit to break. I know most would agree that there are teams that you could name, that you know play dirty and rough, and you expect it before the game even begins.

Well said crazy8s. Coaches need to teach kids the game of basketball. If a team can't win based on their basketball skills, they need to play another sport. In some cases that sport would be football. If you are going to play football, take it to the football field and don't bring it to the basketball court.
