From the Advocate: Boyle County coach David Camic knew his young team would have a big challenge facing Lexington Christian pitcher Austin Johnson in his team's season opener. And the LCA fireballer stymied the host Rebels, tossing five innings of two-hit baseball as the Eagles won 7-2 Monday. "He had good stuff, a good slider. He had good command the whole game," said Camic, who said Johnson hit 89 mph on the radar gun. "89's tough the first day when you've been seeing tennis balls in the gym. LCA is a very solid club, look for them to make a deep run in the postseason again this year. Their bats looked to be in mid-season form, and their starting pitcher was mid-upper 80's and hit his spots all night. I thought that Boyle played alright for their first game, a lot of kids seeing playing varsity for the first time. I think that 5 or 6 of the starters are playing regular time varsity for the first time, so they should be a team that improves as the year goes on. A couple of errors hurt the team, and there was some mental mistakes here and there, but for the first game of the season against a legitimate top 10 team, I was very pleased. On the mound, Whittle looked alright. He struggled with his control in the first inning, walking a couple and hitting a batter, but got out of it only giving up one run. He was hitting 88-89 on the gun of one of the college coaches that was there. Ross was a nice choice to follow Whittle on the mound. This freshman threw strikes, had a nice curve ball. I agree that the region is wide open this year. West is the team to beat, they are the champs until someone else knocks them off. I think that Boyle will surprise some people. They are not getting much pre-season respect, but they return some good players.... Cody Morris, Ben Carter, Garrick Whittle. Some of the younger players are ready to step up. The defense will be good and there are some real hitters on this team. Whittle and Carter can be two of the best pitchers in the region, both are throwing in the 86-87mph range this spring, and should keep getting stronger. Catching is going to be the biggest question mark for this team, but don't count them out. Whittle has signed with Morehead State, Morris and Carter are getting a lot of looks from colleges as well, both should be playing next year.

Boyle Co. will be at Cocoa Expo April 4-9. What dates will others be in Cocoa?

Garrick Whittle, LHP from Boyle Co. looked really good there, gunned in the mid/upper 80's. He committed to Morehead State following the showcase. He could be one of the sleepers in the state this year.

West Jessamine: Tyler West and Travis Ward, both are great hitters and West can pitch good Danville: Mike Evans, excellent hitter Boyle: Garrick Whittle and Ben Carter, both can hit for power and throw mid to upper 80's Mercer: Clay Cinnamon (spelling?), should be their ace pitcher Rockastle: Tanner Perkins, already signed with WKU

Athletics are independent entities within a college or university. Any school may designate how their athletic programs are run, whether it be only intramural, club, Juco I,II,III, NAIA I,II, III or NCAA I,II,or III. The problem within the university is that the athletes will only have two years to compete at the school. If they choose to go into a Bachelor program at that school, their competitive athletic career is over. They can still transfer to any other school the same as a 2-year Juco. I think that VU is NJCAA Division II

Vincennes University in Indiana grants Bachelor degrees, but athletics are Juco NJCAA.

I know that you are not supposed to look ahead.... but if Boyle and Bell both win this week, where will their game be played?????

Don't overlook last year's regional runner up. Boyle lost 5 senior starters, but the pitching staff should be better. Senior Garrick Whittle is getting D-1 attention, and senior Ben Carter is recovered from his Tommy John surgery and throwing well. Junior Blake Perry should be getting D-1 attention as well. I would put their top 3 pitchers up against anyone's top 3 in the region. The question will be how well the bats come around in the lineup, and some defensive positions are in question. They could be tough when tournament time comes around.

Which Region winners will play each other for the right to go to Louisville?? And who will host those games?

Does anyone know the KHSAA rules about players wearing their High School t-shirts to play in?

Somerset put up a good game, but lost to a better team. Officiating aside, if those teams met 10 times, Mercer would win 8. It wasn't the first time that a game had some poor umpiring, and it wont be the last. It is just part of the game. After all... Somerset had some great opportunities to win the game, they just didn't execute. So the calls did not beat them. I also don't think that restroom facilities played any part of what happened on the field

Mercer had graduation Friday, the decision for the game had to be made prior to the Boyle/Mercer final, so they had to make it for Saturday. Worked out well for both teams pitching wise.

Boyle has all three top arms eligible. I imagine Bottoms will start, but Payne and Whittle are both available if needed

Robertson pitched for Mercer, Whittle pitched for Boyle. Boyle gave up all 3 runs in the 3rd inning, all unearned off of a couple of errors. Top of the order for the Rebels hit Robertson all night. Mercer came with Claunch in the 5th, Boyle continued to score. Mercer didn't come with Ashford until the 7th. Guess they were trying to save him for the championship game. Payne finished out the game for Boyle for the save, Whittle the win, Robertson the loss. Morris for Boyle was 4 for 4 on the night. Big win for the Rebs

Mercer lost to Boyle.... what happened to the "guarantee"? Boyle/West should be a good game at Boyle.
