In the pros good hitters make outs 7 out of 10 times, but not necessarily in high school. Getting ahead in the count is important, yet a good hitter will wait for a fast ball and sit on it if he expects the pitcher to throw one 90% on the time. If he knows the pitcher is throwing a fastball first pitch every time, this will help his database on that pitcher as well.

That's not true entirely sports fan. Pitches are called by the coaches. Too, I think the pitching at St. X could be much more developed during the season so that off-speed pitching is more effective than it currently is.

I have tried to be objective in my comments as well as show respect with Covington Catholic’s recent wins, yet I am not so sure your post has the same objectiveness. Words like “begging” to describe Hamilton Badin’s scheduling conflict (?) make me wonder. My point is that when I look at Covington Catholic’s record coming into the LIT (which does not include partial games) is that their record was 16-1 against all Northern Kentucky teams, none of which were ranked in the top 25 last week.

Corey Littrell pitched very well for Trinity and did not leave much of an opening for X. He has really developed since youth baseball. Trinity took the momentum early and carried it through. St. X started 3 sophomores and warmed up a freshman in the bullpen. The future is bright for X if development occurs.

PRP lost 5 Division I players last year, yet still can get the job done. PRP did not pitch either Harper or Gibson.

There are an number of teams that who is on the mound can make a considerable difference. Ballard, with Mccombs on the mound, comes to mind. Trinity drops off considerably after the first two starters. With Harper and Gibson, I think PRP is much better (yet PRP beat Male yesterday with someone else on the hill). I also think that this year the state tournament is open. A number of teams on a given day can beat each other. Covington Catholic’s wins in the LIT were substantial, yet how would they do playing 6 games in a week, 5 against top 15 teams in the state? Besides the LIT wins, I do not see any wins against top 25 teams. Are they any? Has Covington Catholic considered playing the top Ohio (and even Indiana) teams?

Surprising, yet I'm sure that they will play their best on Sunday.

Apollo being number one is most surprising. They lost twice in the LIT (to Cov. Cath. and St. X) and then to Lexington Catholic on April 11.

Was the Lexington Christian team that played against Covington Catholic the same team as earlier in the week? I had heard that there may have been different players on the field?

2 sophomore pitchers on the hill for X. Look for great things out of these 2.

St. X was in command of the game until the 6th, then the game slipped away. Has any in state teams beaten Apollo? Should Cov. Cath be rated higher?

The LIT is a great way to bring teams together. St. X was up 3-2 after 5 innings. X's starting pitcher pitched a good game but seemed to be done after the 5th inning. I heard he had not pitched in over 2 weeks.

They were significant wins for Male, no doubt. At the same time, the 7th region may very well come down to who his playing well at the time and how the ball is bouncing. I think a number of the 7th region teams can beat each other on a given day.

It will be interesting for St. X as well. St. X next week has scheduled 6 games. On Monday, they play a vastly improved Desales (with a new head coach) who was 10-2 last Friday with win over #18 Ballard, a 15-12 loss to #10 Bullitt East, and giving a previously unbeaten CAL 2 losses. Wednesday, before the LIT, is an important district double header showdown against #6 Male. Then in the LIT, Thursday #13 Lexington Christian, Saturday #11 Covington Catholic and #1 Apollo. St. X is a young team--"young" in the sense that of the 8 position players they have been starting 2 sophomores (sometimes 3), a junior, and 5 seniors. Of those 5 seniors, only one was a regular starter last year. Hopefully, learning for the end of the season will help.

Was it CAL’s current head coach or a former coach? Are you sure it was St. X’s head coach? X also has a scout. Tompkins has a very good baseball mind and does a very good job of knowing other teams. He’s out at fields watching other teams. I think this is a good way to help your team prepare.

Very good point. That’s one thing that makes PRP very good is that everyone is up for them every game and they have learned to deal with it. Baseball, too, is a little different game than football and basketball. With different pitchers on the mound and the ups and downs of hitting, it’s hard to dominate every game. Take NCAA baseball, last week LSU was Baseball America’s top team and their record was 26-9.

I would have to wonder that after Mccoombs(who pitched against Trinity and has signed with U of L) how much pitching Ballard has?

Peary is soph who did a great job. He has long legs and a very bright future. Manual and St. X are 1-1 against each other and both have given up 10 runs to each other. One of the three--Male, Manual, or St. X--will not go the the 7th region tournament. Last year it was Male.

Grayson had his best outing of the year. Very capable left-handed pitcher.
