It will be interesting to see how the younger players on both teams respond, especially for Highlands. They had a chance to get some of the "nerves" of post season play out in the first round. If they settle down, Highlands will have a chance & this will be a lot closer than the regular season game.

Ballermom, my daughter has played many seasons of AAU ball in the Cincy area now & it is a great experience! If your daughter wants to raise the bar on her level of play, than a good AAU program is a great way to do so! Go for it! Unfortunately, my daughter's team disbanded & she is now looking for a new team. Because of KHSAA rules, she misses opportunities in the Cincy area for tryouts etc. She is a sophomore this year with a Sep 1991 birthday, which is young for a sophomore. In addition she also now has 3 years of Varsity high school (Grant Co) experience as she moved up as an 8th grader & was a starter this year at guard. If anyone out there is looking for a player let me know!

Yes! My daughter is a very successful 2 sport athlete at a mid-sized high school (1100). She in fact played high school varsity basketball as an 8th grader as well as high school JV soccer as an 8th grader. She is an A student & very happy doing exactly what she is doing with a very busy sports schedule, including AAU basketball. The rule has always been that she had to maintain her grades...it has taught her to be organized, stay on task & to utilize her time well. All valuable skills including those learned in the midst of competition and a team environment.

Interesting call in the 4th on Notre Dame's Jackson-the intentional foul. Thought that was a bit much...didn't seem to warrant the intentional, but I didn't have a good view. Anybody else have a better look at the play? If the game was one possession closer, that call could have been a hot topic for this game. Congrats to both teams. Outstanding!

This game was much closer than the final shows...Walton put up a good fight throughout the first half & kept it under 14 for much of the second. And they did it without Garcia...she went down in the 1st & did not return...looked like her knee. Good luck to both in the regionals!

I agree with Time and Score. This one was ugly with the turnovers, etc. Difference was Walton played as a team...Grant Co. didn't for most of the game. They did have opportunities to win but could not put it together. Good luck to the Bearcats against Simon Kenton. And congratulations to Grant Co for a great season...coach Richey has done a great job turning the program around in a very short time...a 19-9 season is nothing to be ashamed about!

Grant Co vs Walton tonight at Simon Kenton...I am going to call this game for Grant. Great showings in their games last wk.

Congrats to both programs! Look forward to the rematches next season. I think it is great the we are talking about college scouts attending games in the 8th region!

Here's one a young man told me yesterday happened to him...no towel, no water or anything like that involved. The opposing team's coach just reached out & stole the ball from this player from the sideline as he was running past the bench! He did say a T was involved on that one...and I don't think there was really anything creative about it or even if it could be considered a tactic. Lapse in judgement maybe.

Know EXACTLY which fan Buttels is talking about at the top of the stands. I agree with 1734 regarding the inability for some to distinguish btw physical & dirty play. It seems that some folks have a hard time with that, especially regarding girls basketballl & even more so when involving a program with such young players playing Varsity ball. It looks like from the numbers that it was an exciting game in the first half. Congrats to both & good luck in district play. Nice to see that Buttelwerth was back on the court!

Some additional combined stats on the Gorby/Garnett guard duo for this game (I am not 100% sure I have the breakdown for each, but will correct if needed when I do): 20 rebounds (Gorby 8 Garnett 12) 14 assists (Gorby 6 Garnett 8) Garnett, double double on Sr nite. Way to go!

The coach jumped up & down pointing to the towel & yelling at the ref on that side of the court (at midcourt), who looked back at him & then down to see what he was pointing at & called time...the Grant player with the ball was near that sideline in front of the Owen bench...the other 4 Grant players were already past midcourt on the fastbreak & 2 Owen players were trying to come back to cut off the Grant player with the ball...she was looking to pass downcourt when they stopped play. Grant had the numbers as Owen Co had not gotten back yet on the break. The Grant Co coach was VERY vocal on this one.

We have all pretty much seen the girls doing the bend over to tie their shoes routine to catch a few seconds rest & other stuff players/coaches do during the course of the game that push the rules a little bit. Last night in the Owen/Grant game, the Owen coach was out of time outs in the 4th & Grant Co had the ball on a break. The coach the entire game had a towel around his neck...somehow that towel magically appeared on the court in front of his bench. The Grant player with the ball (who just happened to be a great downcourt passer) was on a break with open players downcourt when this towel appeared...ref called time to remove the towel..momentum lost & to overtime. Worked! (Grant did win in the overtime) I know that there have to be a lot more creative coaching tactic stories out there. Anyone want to share?

Congratulations to Grant Co on it's 19th win of the season. The 19 wins ties the all-time school record. Grant Co led by senior Leslie Garnett with 20pts & sophomore Candace Gorby with 11. The backcourt pair scored 9pts combined in overtime. Great night for Garnett in her final home game on senior night! Owen led by Cochran with 18 & Green with 10. :dancingpa

Coach Wilhoit manages to get the best out of his players at Wmstown...they work hard the entire game. Careful, they sometimes catch you off guard or if you get too comfortable they will surprise you. Gallatin wins tonight.

Not yet for Billiter. I think it is something that will happen though.

Grant Cty is pushing hard to "take it to the next level"...were within a basket of winning this game Wed night w/Carroll Cty...look what Carroll did to Walton the next night.

True on the shots missed...Grant Co could have pulled this one off...had opportunities on some of those open shots at the end. Didn't see the Fr game, saw JV...JV game should have gone to Grant...noted they pulled the 2 sophomores late in the 4th & sent them to the lockerroom to prepare for the Varsity game-Gorby & Lockard (Gorby was out last 2 wks with a cast for thumb injury). It was great to see Whitney play...hopefully get to see her play again before she heads off to college! Thought #20 for Carroll was quite disruptive on defense...especially on the ball defense. Good Luck with Walton tonite...Grant has them next wk for districts.

Could it be said that a shooting slump be the result of a well planned & executed defense?

Final...GREAT game...although Grant Co. did not come out on top in this one, I must say that they have come a long way in recent years. So far this year they are 18-8...to put in perspective, here are previous years records I checked out on the KHSAA site: 12-16 for 2005-06 (made it to regionals for the first time in MANY years) 15-10 for 2004-05 3-23 for 2003-04 1-24 for 2002-03 2-24 for 2001-02 2-26 for 2000-01 The gals at Grant have much to be proud of & Coach Richey has done something special in a very short time. Congratulations to both teams on a great contest!

Carroll won 47-40 in Dec...any predictions on tonight's rematch?
