I guess you didn't see previous post regarding keeping things in perspective: Grant Co has a way to go in order to compete at the level Highlands plays in the regular season. I would bet that many of the girls playing summer ball at HHS will not be dressed Varsity for them in the fall. If the normal rotation was in, Grant would not have won the game they did. I have watched Boone, Highlands, Notre Dame & many others play last season (and in other seasons) on numerous occasions. We see a lot of basketball, both college & HS. Going to watch really good teams play keeps my daughter humble & the game in perspective. My post was nothing more then to note that Grant did not play against Connor like they had against Boone & Highlands earlier in the week. They looked terrible & know it.

Post player for Grant is a senior next season, Selena McIntosh. Benzinger for Scott did look frustrated in the Ludlow game, especially in the 2nd half.

Grant was impressive in a win over St. Henry yesterday. They also won over Henry Co. They are not consistent though. Never know what team is going to show up. Saw Scott vs Ludlow also. Scott again showed a lot of promise, but could not hold on in the second half for the win. Missed a lot of putback shots in the paint. Guards were struggling a bit with the outside shot as well & seemed to be getting frustrated. Give Ludlow credit, came back from a pretty good deficit & was strong inside.

Yes. Terrible performance by Grant. The point guard for Grant was having a painful bout of lower leg problems in that game & tried to play. Her performance in the Connor game was not normal for her. Did you see Grant against Boone & Highlands earlier in the week against Thomas More? A much different team. I like the energy & confidence Connor has...I think that they should be the team to watch for this year over Boone Co.

As another BGP'r said, it was like watching paint dry on occasion...summer ball is like that sometimes isn't it! It is hard to not really get on them, but it is a time to try stuff out & see what needs work, etc etc. It is also a time that we have to remember a lot of these girls that are getting out there have not touched a ball in a while. I think the summer session is when you see who is serious (meaning who works in the off season) and who isn't! Shsbballmom, sorry I didn't see you there! I am not exactly sure which girl is your's, so I may have walked up to the wrong person & embarassed myself! Thanks for remembering my kid...she is working through problems with her calves right now which causes her a tremendous amount of pain. You can tell she is having problems when she looks like she is playing with work boots on, she can't move her feet very well...that and she has no shot without her legs. Not a issue regarding playing or hurting herself more by playing. When she stops playing, the pain stops, but it is one that may require surgery if the conservative approach doesn't work. She was much happier last night as she had some results from icing between games & certain stretches she has to do and you won't see her wear long socks again, no compression allowed on her calves. She needs time for therapy to work, but that requires patience, which as we all know a 15yr old girl athlete doesn't have a whole lot of! The upcoming season is not in jeopardy. Soccer season maybe, but not basketball. Scott has a lot to look forward to! I like seeing the tall girls they have coming in...lots of potential. Our post players were overwhelmed for a while. The aggressiveness from the pt guard is excellent. Wmstown has improved. Wilhoit's daughter comes to mind, she works very hard. Attacks the rim. Love the Wmstown fans, always behind the team. Great group.

Yep. Every night this week, 2 games per night per team I think.

The gym condition is something to watch out for tonight. No air conditioning & the humidity is up. Tempers will be flying for sure. The point guard for Grant is working on lower leg problems, so she may be limited this week, but looking forward to seeing more of the new coach in action.

There is some animosity from just a few parents (and a player or 2) about their ex-coach, Bert Richey. He was there on the Highlands bench, which is where he should be, supporting his wife & her team. He is not coach at Grant Co anymore. The girls did play extra hard. Some for different reasons maybe than others, but the girls did want to win. I know my kid wants to win no matter who it is, summer ball or not. Sometimes parents forget themselves though don't they! I personally was just glad to see my daughter play well against some good competition this week. She had opportunities to play against some teams she normally doesn't & learned she could play well against them.

Agreed on the time to work...works great for summer ball. I think the rule was if you were fouled on the shot, you just took 1 & got the other. No fouls were counted, so no 1-1 etc. If you made it & got fouled, I can't remember if they shot it or not. But I do specifically remember HHS shooting freethrows in that game. That was when the Grant coach was asking me kid questions about what she was seeing happening in the game & testing her knowledge about what should happen when, etc. etc.

The new coach had the opportunity for just 3 practices before this week. He does not have a JV coach or a F coach yet. It cracks me up that 1 game, in summer, means he doesn't care about building the team? I heard the coach several times call out one of the whole 2 plays he had a chance to work on in those 3 practices & specifically say run it through. Would he do that if it was all about the win? Those kids did play in games at Thomas More. There were 7other games. Some good, some really bad. But all got PT. Grant won just 2 (or maybe 3...can't remember...see how important the win column was for me!) games. 1 of them just happened to be against Highlands.

Those were the game rules. All the games were supposed to be played that way.

Is Towles injured?

Asked my daughter about the stall at the end of the game. She told me that coach called her to the sideline when Highlands was at the freethrow line with a minute or 2 to go & Grant Co up by 10 maybe. He asked her what would she do if it was a real game, not summer. She told him she would slow the game down. He told her that it's real game time then, let me see you do it. She said he didn't tell her specifically what to do, just do what you she should do if it was a real game situation. Although my kid hates the term...looks like it was just a bit of a "basketball IQ" check.

Grant had 9 there for the game (3 were freshman last yr). I am sure the new coach is figuring out what he has this summer or what he is going to have to go with this fall. Or maybe a big competitive streak...Mercy did whip on Grant a bit earlier in the week. It was difficult for the Grant team in this game as their ex-coach was present & it was the first time they played with Richey present and not coaching them. Highland's guard Allen is recovering from injury. Not sure about the others.

Me either! Maybe he was trying to see if they actually could stall (or helping my kid....she was having big problems in that game with leg cramps...trainer had her afterwards to get her legs stretched out).

Just saw 2 games yesterday...Grant Co. beat Highlands & Bellevue.

Pushing the ball hard...fastbreak & the transition game is a big priority.

Lots of teams participating in the event this week from northern Kentucky as well as several from across the river. Didn't get a chance to see many games last night, but a couple of observations....Grant County new coach debut...different style of play for the team...will be interesting to see how this team develops. They fared well against Boone County, although there were notable absences for Boone. Mercy (from Cincy) gave Highlands & Grant Co a lot to handle last night. TALL post players. Watched Dixie Heights a bit, may be a tough year for them, but this is the summer session. On other teams, recovering players not on the court, Daughtery from Ludlow (shoulder) & Allen (shoulder) for Highlands. Have heard both will have long recoveries, but should return for the regular season. Hope to see a few more teams in action the rest of the week. It is interesting to watch, as team coaches are more likely to try new stuff, play combinations of players not normally used & so on. It is also much more apparent it seems in the summer session which players continue to work after the regular season & which do not. Any other BGP'rs in attendance?

Grant County - Senior to be Selena McIntosh, Juniors to be Candace Gorby, Shayna Lockard & Tara Morgan

NO WAY is driving a bus in Grant Co a better gig right now....he applied for the right job here, although I have to say that the team is a bit more chaotic right now than he would probably like...although losing seniors is always tough (had 2 this past season) we have now lost a senior to be (Hensley has left the district) & another senior to be is still battling injury & health issues (Johnson). Rumour also has it that another player (sophomore this year) is struggling with issues outside of school & may not return next season.

Darrel Guffey (from Whitley County) was announced as the new head coach yesterday to the team by the athletic director. Congrats & best of luck Coach Guffey!

Just heard from my daughter, had a team meeting today. Robinson explained why he resigned & she said her new coach IS...... Guffy from Whitley Co! Any insight about the new fella from BGPrs out there? As far as I know, he has never coached girls, but was on the boys side. Did not coach last year.
