This is going to be an interesting game. I have not seen Carroll, but Owen seems to be coming on very, very strong! Could this be our overtime game?? This one to the wire, Owen at home, gonna go with Owen in a very close game. By 2.

Grant Co with the win by 8. Homecourt, important district game & some residual motivation from the district loss last season. All the starters have a ton of varsity experience:2 Juniors & 3 Seniors start & the Juniors played Varsity as 8th graders, so all starters have 4 years of varsity experience. The freshman will come off the bench & will be a surprise for WV. She is a lot to handle. After reading the WV thread, Grant Co may have the edge in preparation for the game as well. Open gyms? Yep, ALL upperclassmen, Seniors & Juniors attended. Got back on a flight from Ft Lauderdale New Year's Eve, back in the gym New Year's Day. Every player present & accounted for. Gotta love the work ethic. We'll see tonight if it pays off. The only problem I see is if Grant gets into foul trouble...in Florida, they let them play very physical & don't call a lot. Making the adjustment back to the 8th region refs may be a problem. The physical play in Florida took a quarter for the team to adjust to down there & they played 3 games that style. WV will have Grant in their grill on defense I think, let's hope Grant doesn't get into foul trouble early because of it! I think an interesting sidenote is that both programs are under new leadership & have a lot in common because of that. Successful seasons prior to the coaching change, etc. It will be interesting to see how the programs continue to adjust to the change. I know Grant County is fortunate to hire a coach that is very knowledgeable & I don't think the adjustment to his style will take as long or be as difficult as it seems to be at WV.

Grant County (both girls & boys varsity) travel on a "big" trip over the Christmas break every other year. It allows each player as they come through the program at least one opportunity to go. This year to Fort Lauderdale. The last trip was to Phoenix. It also allows the boosters 2 years to raise money to give these kids an opportunity to travel. Some parents also go at their own expense with the teams.

I just saw Grant/Ryle game. Grant came out in much better form & gave Ryle a good game. Halftime was 31-30 Ryle. Grant could not get shots to fall in the second half & Ryle couldn't miss! Ryle's point guard had the hot hand last night. It was a good game & it was nice to see Grant step back up, bring some intensity as a team & continue to improve.

Grant did not play with their normal intensity. They looked lethargic compared to their more recent games. Free throw line was the game. GC 5 Villa 24. The PG for Villa was, herself alone, about 13 for 17 from the line. Grant couldn't buy a foul. Can't win if you give them the free shots. Some say refs, but a point could be made that when a team plays out of their normal rhythm, especially on defense, you send the other team to the line & get into foul trouble. If you send them enough, look what happens. Have to admit, a 24-5 point difference at the line is something to think about. Grant Co. led 19 to 15 at the half & was within 1 with about a minute to go. A great defensive effort by both teams tonight. Grant was in foul trouble with senior center McIntosh fouling out in early in the 4th & the starting junior PG Gorby fouling out in the last minute. Starting senior guard Johnson from GC left the game in the 3rd with a knee injury. She was up & walking after the game, so hopefully it is not serious. Oldham did a great job containing PG Gorby. Grant Co did a great job defending the post. Nice job by both teams preparing & executing their game plans. I also must comment on the refs. What is with the 8th region officials? Terrible calls again tonight.

Congrats to Tori! She plays much bigger than her size & will be fun to watch develop the next few years. Grant was in control most of this game until the 4th when Williamstown made a great run. Both teams ran into a bit of foul trouble early. Grant's PG & another starting guard hit the bench early with trouble. The PG had 3 at the beginning of the 2nd! In the 4th the foul trouble made it difficult to pressure as both guards had 4 & Williamstown got hot on the perimeter. Great run Williamstown to get into the game. You can never let your guard down with this team. They play hard & are always scrappy. A lot of comments were heard about the refs on this one, but there were some bad calls going both ways. Both teams had to deal with it. Great job Grant Co for keeping your heads in the 4th & not losing focus when Williamstown made the run.

Gotta go with Carroll on this one by 12.

Although this game is being played at Grant County, the Grant crowd will be thinner than it would be traditionally for this rivalry. Turns out the high school play is being performed at 7 tonight in the Grant County High auditorium. In addition, the boys F/JV/V are also playing tonight away at Simon Kenton. :cry:

Grant County with the win. Both teams are always up for this game & it is a lot of fun to attend. I think the first half will stay close.

So true! It seems more often with girls than boys that they watch the shot ..THEN they react after the ball hits the rim. Reactive instead of proactive. Too late by then to rebound. They are already beat!

So in your case, you redo the stats. Excellent! Do you think that is true for most coaches? And in your case, how inaccurate did you find the original stats from the volunteers to your redone stats?

What a great thread! To add another angle, we all seem to agree that an all around game is key, and the stats kept are what are used to critique a player. Rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, TO. Points & shots are easy to count. What about consistency in the other stats? My own personal experience over the years is that those stats can be completely inaccurate in a lot of situations. The actual definition of an assist, who to give the TO to, the passer or the catcher...situational stuff, judgement calls to whoever may be keeping those stats. But who are those people? Students in some cases. Assistant coaches maybe. Parents? Relatives? How neutral is that? How many assists are missed when a parent or relative is keeping stats & the person on the receiving end of the assist is the related person & they miss the assist because they are thinking of the shot their own player made, a little internal celebration? I am not saying this is anyone's fault or suggesting that folks deliberately "fudge", I am just saying that there is a problem in the stat area because of the nature of the system. An area, not just points, that we judge a players performance on...they are just not accurate in a lot of cases because, let's face it, those folks keeping them may not really have a complete understanding of what they are keeping track of. I know I don't most of the time! :jump:

We have always told our daughter that we don't care how many points she comes away with, it is the effort she put forth on both ends of the court. Play hard, play smart & find the best shot, whether it is you or someone else, make the right decision. Make your presence known by playing tough. The game changes when you are on the floor (a player doesn't have to score to change a game) because you play hard, make plays on offense, disrupt plays on defense & most of all, bring your teammates level of play up with you. It is a team. Work through the team. It also doesn't matter how many points you have if you give them up at the other end on defense. It cancels out any great shot you have made if you don't get back on defense!
