Emphasis on scoring..

Featured Replies

Unfortunately, many of our athletes today do not think they played a good game unless they are one of the high scorers on the team. Coaches need to really put emphasis on Defense, assists, rebounds and simply screening for other players. Not every player can be the high scorer.

It seems that the kids get so caught up in it that they sometimes take bad shots or ones that they do not usually make, in an attempt to feel better about their game.

I have seen girls that play great defense upset that they only had 2,5, 7 points in the game. Parents are just as bad, it is the first thing I hear them talking about when the kids come out of the locker room,

To have a team it takes all 5 players playing together to get someone an open shot. I think we all need to be more sensitive to this.

Well Said... there has to be someone throwing the ball to the high scorer or someone setting a screen to get open or an even generous teammate missing the jumpshot on purpose so their teammate can rebound it and put it in.

Announcers need to announce the assist as well as the basket.

Basket by Birdsfan, assist Rockmom.

As a coach I always told my players that scoring is last on my list of judging a players good or bad game. I let them know that anyone can score points (some are better than others of course). But it takes special players to play great defense, rebound, get steals, and throw assists. I emphasize that 4 assists = 8 points. So if a player has 4 points and 5 assists, they really had part in 14 points.

I would much rather have a team that has 4 or 5 players that score 8-12 points a game than a team that has a 20 point a game scorer. It doesn't take a rocket science to figure out who to stop if you only have 1 main scorer!

It cannot be last on the list but an equal part on the list.

It is not as easy as it sounds to find a player(s) to knock down 3 pointers. To be able to drive to the lane and finish. Or a post player to make a strong move and finish while getting fouled but it being a no-call.

It cannot be last on the list but it holds an EQUAL view with the person that gets 8-10 rebounds and 8-10 points. Equal view of a person that gets 16 points to a person who gets 8 assists.

Equal view to the person that held the person they were guarding to 10 points below their average to the person who scored 10.

In the big picture it is "EQUAL" in importance. But I don't let them know that. I would much rather have a player the statline of (these are the true "good" players on teams):

4 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 turnovers

over the statline of (there are tons of these "good" players around

the area, but the media pushes it that way):

19 points, 0 assists, 2 rebounds, 5 turnovers

So to me, scoring is a little less priority. If the TEAM runs the offense like they should, anyone can score off of them.

We have always told our daughter that we don't care how many points she comes away with, it is the effort she put forth on both ends of the court. Play hard, play smart & find the best shot, whether it is you or someone else, make the right decision. Make your presence known by playing tough. The game changes when you are on the floor (a player doesn't have to score to change a game) because you play hard, make plays on offense, disrupt plays on defense & most of all, bring your teammates level of play up with you. It is a team. Work through the team.

It also doesn't matter how many points you have if you give them up at the other end on defense. It cancels out any great shot you have made if you don't get back on defense!

This is an interesting thread. I have had this same discussion with many.

Here is an observation.

What are some of the things that happen on the floor that can change momentem:

1 Blocked Shot

2 Take a Charge

3 Get a Steal

4 Cause a 5 sec call (on the floor or out of bounds)

5 Cause a 10 sec call

6 Hit a Three

7 Get a basket and a foul

8 Dunk

I'm sure there are more but if you look at the list 5 of the eight don't have anything to do with scoring.

Great list! However, ESPN Sportcenter wouldn't like it too much....the media has made scoring a monster. Not that scoring a lot of points is a bad thing. But I think the young players of today do exactly what this thread said in the beginning. They are upset or think they suck if they don't score X points or more....nothing about the other phases of the game which outnumber points!

Taking a Charge, to me, is the best. Cause it puts a foul on the other team (maybe their star player going to the bench now in foul trouble), gives you a closer opportunity to shoot FT's, gives you the ball back offensively, prevents the other team from scoring and as you mentioned changes momentum and can have a huge psychological advantage.

As far as #8, this is a girls' thread.:sssh::D;)

Amber Harris (who now plays at Xaiver U) dunked on my team in a tournament in Indianapolis when she was a junior. My player wasn't sure if she was embarrassed, or like: "cool, I just got dunked on".... haha
