Emphasis on scoring..

Another area that gets overlooked is the box out. Which is really surprizing since it doesn't seem like you can go to a girls game without hearing coaches charging their players to do so. And it seems more often than not that the girls who box out the best are rarely the one to get the rebound.

You are so correct, BDB, boxing out is a lost art as well. I believe the girls box out better than the guys for the most part since most girls don't have the vertical leap like some of the guys do.

Can't win if you don't score (i.e. somebody on the team better be able to put the ball in the basket) but if you can't stop someone from scoring you can't win either.

Who is the player who steps up and gets that important rebound? Who is the one that stops the ball in the last few seconds of a one possession game?

Who stuggles most on the college level - the one with the poorer defensive skills...

So true! It seems more often with girls than boys that they watch the shot ..THEN they react after the ball hits the rim. Reactive instead of proactive. Too late by then to rebound. They are already beat!

Great Post...

I've noticed this as well. But more often then not a teammate will get the rebound as a result of the good box out.

Another observation is the lack of an over the back call. It seems that unless you are making the effort to box out the ref won't make that call even if it may be a foul.
