If the ball carrier hits the face mask he is fine. He is just not allowed to grab it. I believe if it’s contact to the face mask it is supposed to be open handed. As far as a rules change goes there has never been a rule about a “stiff arm”. What you are describing is how the technique was typically taught. It is more commonly taught as more of a strike now to prevent defenders from grabbing the arm and dropping. As far as a ball carrier striking opponents that has been around for decades. One can find plenty of film of players doing it. There was a point of emphasis 10 or so years back about contact to the helmet. For a year or so you would see ball carriers get flagged for lowering a shoulder and striking the helmet of the defender.

The rules section really isn’t that long. You are correct though that eligibility due to transferring won’t affect sub varsity play.

The player would be ineligible for varsity play. Unless something has changed they are eligible for sub varsity play immediately.

@Crazy Legs that is a great post. The fall will be interesting to see how everything plays out and how players are used. If you look at the stats through 11 games Gregg’s stats aren’t much different than the QB from Highlands last year. Probably in the end at the HS level get your best dudes the ball as much as you can. Then after that it’s who has the most dudes or that extremely special dude.

@Crazy Legs that sir is an impressive and well put together breakdown. I think last year Dixie had the second hardest schedule in 5A only behind Bowling Green and that was by a very slim margin. That is a real tough balance to have too. With Scott and Boone in the district barring something crazy Dixie will make the playoffs. So in theory the schedule prepares them for post season play. The other side is how does it affect injuries and optics when just looking at wins and loses. One thing about defense in general in today’s game is your defense needs to be able to statistically hold teams to 21 pts and offense needs to be able to produce 28 pts. Between the rise in number of possessions, game clock, passing and other factors that tends to be the benchmark. Once again great breakdown and thank you for taking the time to also figure out the accompaning statistics.

Now compare his TD to his passing attempts. I’m going to guess his TD to passing attempts is better than those others mentioned. At a minimum it will be comparable. Also thank you for looking that up and doing the math.

John Curtis Christian is a split back veer team not a wing-t team. They run a version of the Houston Veer which is the same offense DLS in Concord CA ran on their 100 game win streak. Probably the best ways to evaluate a wing-t passing game TD to Att ratio and yards per attempt in passing game. A QB isn’t going to throw for 2000+ yards in a season often. It’s not crazy to see them throw for 20+ TDs in a season.

Scott Co above Cooper is a surprise to me. With Cooper at 4 I think that’s much closer. You would think 1-4 would be fairly close and could be debated a few different ways.

Well this is definitely going to drum up some conversation. I’m looking forward to seeing people’s opinions on this. I feel like in the past these have been fairly good ballpark ratings but I might be remembering that wrong.

It wasn’t meant as a dig at all. It just comes up a lot on here that wing-t means option for some reason. Sorry if it came off that way because that wasn’t the intent at all. Rice’s passing game was more complicated than the Houston veer or the wishbone guys. He realized that by going 3 wide and running split back veer the defense had to declare their hand more. The defense had to account for 3 gaps and 3 possible ball carriers. The offense was negating one defender by reading them. I you load up (and even up) to stop the option then you have a passing game with 7 man protection. If you play off then they are going to run it. The offense was just difficult due to getting good at the triple and good enough in the passing game.

I don’t know why people associate the option with the wing-t. It’s not a main part or even run by most wing-t teams. With that Homer Rice did some extremely innovative things. The development of the split back veer out of 3 wide set. It created some real issues for defenses. Many of the underpinning parts of the offense are very applicable in today’s game. He also created with swing back offense while Owen Hauck (sp) coached with him. Really intriguing set. He has also been credited with the highlands youth program and the module that was extremely successful.

In general most ADs aren’t going to be overly knowledgeable about football scheme. Probably even less so with a comity. There of course will be some exceptions. There are a lot of people who can probably talk a big game but can’t back it up. People get the wing-t screwed up all the time. Even fewer people have a true working knowledge of the offense. What the system is based on or around and how it works. Bellevue Washington snapped DLS win streak and was a national power running it. Of course DLS (along with Trinity back in the day) were split back veer teams along with John Curtis. Would Beechwood turn down John Curtis as a coach because he is a veer guy? Rick Darlington has been extremely successful in FL and other places running the single wing. Kerry Combs is a Flexbone guy. That’s not even getting into an AD or a hiring committee trying to understand Top, Liz, Mable, Pony, Penny, Mint or the newer 3 safety stuff. where those people would be better off is having the person explain practice, install and teaching progressions. That stuff is harder to bluff than scheme.

I’m wondering how many people in general would even recognize WV offense as wing-t? If someone reading this thread hasn’t watched them they are in the gun 100% of the time. They are typically 3 wide with some variety. So unless the general fan is told it’s wing-t most wouldn’t even have a clue. Injuries over the past two years haven’t helped things either. It’s interesting to hear people talk about wanting to bring in a new exciting offense. This isn’t like college where you can recruit both players and coaches. You are often limited more by your coaching staff than players. It’s the way the HS game has evolved that people want to see points.

@AirRaidCoach does a good job of describing systems. I’m just surprised by the definition of balance. If Tubby Raymond is the patron saint of the wingt-t then the air raid version is of course the pirate king Mike Leach. Leach was very clear that balance had nothing to do with the number of rushing attempts or passes. To him (he used the wishbone as his example) it was distribution of the ball across positions. It appears from reading that some are confusing entertaining with effective. They would rather see 300 yards passing and 200 yards rushing and lose then 300 yards rushing and 10 yards passing and win. The fact is the wing-t (and a bunch of other dinosaur offenses) win state titles in different states all the time. While not the wing-t, if you enjoy these offenses look up Liberty Hill in Texas. The wing-t is sequential football. Plays built off of the same or similar backfield actions that take advantage of defensive alignment/reaction. There are also different versions from Tubby Raymond’s traditional to Herschel Moore/Wes Elrod/Cobleigh Hybrid Wing-t. The problem some wing-t teams will run into (and there are a ton of teams that have this issue) is being able to pass/run when they really need to. The wing-t is an amazing passing offense with the play action. Like mentioned before that is one reason teams have went to gun-t stuff. I think the bigger reason is to expand the QB run game and give him more downhill runs along with easy completions.

I’d say there won’t be a big change on defense. WV has run a similar defense to Cooper. Offensively is where I think you’re going to see a noticeable change from gun wing-t to something else.

It doesn’t matter if your title says full time or not any AD (and pretty much every HC at least) is working 40 hours a week just about. Of course that changes some with coaches out of season. When an AD is full time position it is similar to an admin position. Things are handle probably differently overall when there is that type of setup. There may or may not of been very many applicants for the position. In general there aren’t as many people going into or staying in coaching. Coaching where you’re from and/or played can always be a tossup. Hopefully Jones is supported and he grows with the position

If the AD doesn’t want basketball to do well then what sport(s) does he want to do well? The district has money to do things. In general it looks like athletic decisions (as far as money) hasn’t been handled well. This is from the outside looking in. The biggest thing for someone that is inexperienced is all the administrative parts of the job. Fundraising, purchasing of things, schedules, paperwork, dealing with administration, youth programs and so on.

Joshua Smith has been sending emails out as the HC. I have no idea about Coach Smith.

The Boone, Conner, Cooper, Scott, Dixie district is highlighted in blue but I don’t think there is a change. Am I missing something?
