Shelby County names Marcus Harris head football coach.
From Shelby Co born and raised. My parents graduated from Shelby. I hate reading the above. Sports were always a big thing for the County. Baseball, football, basketball, and just about any sport there was a pride to play at a high level. I would be curious to know who all applied for the position. Especially former players to see if any of my former teammates applied. I hope the hire goes well. If for some reason it doesn’t hopefully it doesn’t damage/setback the program too much.

Shelby County names Marcus Harris head football coach.
He was the HC as West and the OC at Western or he used to be the HC at West Middle?

Open Job: Shelby County
Now comes the new thread and we get to learn about Coach Harris.

Craig Yeast is the new head football coach at Mercer County.
I’m pretty sure he coached Bryan Station for a season or two also. Also I believe he was an assistant at Marion County before that.

Grant and Mason both use them. For 90.00 you get a custom imprint, laces and your choice of three different models. The dual threats while still legal are built on the smaller end of the specs for a legal football.

They were in fact team issue dual threat footballs which we’ve used for three out of the last four seasons. Great product.

Ball must be brown. The laces can be any color. The two stripes may be white or yellow. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the stripe anything but yellow.

Officiating shortage solution thesis
I might start rambling and if so excuse me please. The Starbucks analogy isn’t realistic. Schools just finding money isn’t realistic. If someone thinks it is I’ll set up a meeting for you too see how much you can get achieved. Some are not truly aware of how the other half lives. I’m a pretty laid back guy when it comes to officials. I don’t want their job and I know it’s difficult. If I don’t agree with a call I ask for an explanation. I’ll ask which official is responsible for a call. I’ll ask them to watch for something. If I ask and it keeps happening then I might be a little more vocal. Never cuss or chew anyone out. I know the rules pretty well. If I feel if a rule is not being applied or interpreted correctly I discuss it. I present it as I’m looking for an explanation to see if I understand the rule correctly. Sometimes it really is a penalty but someone used an incorrect term. Other times it’s something else. We had an official tell us that the laces on a football cannot have color. Some crews from certain associations must get abused by other teams. They are more defensive and have a different overall attitude. You expect crews from different areas to be slightly different personalities. I had a crew for an earlier game this season and the first thing I did was let the head of their association know how good they were and how much I enjoyed them. I had the same white hat latter and it was the same message. We lost both games but I’d take that crew every Friday. I truly respect officials and we couldn’t have the game without them. If people have an issue then pick up a whistle. I hope we can find a way to increase the numbers and help them.

Assistant coaching Jobs
20 was based off of Monday through Friday and in my example I was referring to parapros. Not many jobs allow you to dedicate a large amount of time to be an assistant coach like teaching. That’s also why I said “at least”. There are a number of programs that have moved away from meeting on the weekends and work from home. I’m not counting sitting at home on Hudl in the time total. Not all assistants are equal either. Some assistants aren’t in charge of a position group. Some have no real game planning or practice planning responsibilities.

Assistant coaching Jobs
That right there is one big limiting factor. People aren’t going into education or coaching like they use to so that hurts. Then unless you work/live in a pretty decent populated area good luck getting someone to drive out to coach. There aren’t a ton of assistants making decent money. Then there is the time required. You’re family better be real understanding about that “second job” or “hobby” because it’s going to add at least 20 hours of time.

Burke is a great person and coach. If that is who in fact they hired I wish the best to both parties.

Pretty much every school is. Now if there is a paid spot and/or a teaching spot is a different story. Grant Co is always looking for some.

2023-2024 Football Realignment
Has nothing to do with the number of 4A to 5A. It’s that they are a 4A school. Heck JC should be sending them thank you cards every year. HHS should play up a class just because Cov Cath is there. They can play each other without being in the same class. I think the common belief is that Great Crossings, and Douglas move up to 6A and Scott Co stays 5A.

2023-2024 Football Realignment
Some believe HHS will drop down to 4A where I believe they should be due to alignment. I won’t be surprised if Great Crossings moves up to 6A along with Douglas. Johnson Central would be interesting due to their enrollment. I believe they have enough to be 5A.

Is football free?
There are a number of places where there is very little parental involvement. In most cases coaches/programs are very thankful for the money, sacrifice, time, etc that parents put in. There are just a lot of places that is not the norm. If it wasn’t for coaches or teammates there would be a lot of players not playing due to lack of home support.

Georgetown used to be a gun run and shoot team back in the day.

Is football free?
That’s honestly a selling point we use. Past the physical there isn’t an out of pocket cost. We feed our kids and make sure they get some type of cloth. That’s not a big deal in some places and others that’s a very big deal. Some sports will say that they are free but players still end up having to purchase parts of the uniform for r other items.

Coaching "Realistic Football"
I think many associate this with small schools but it’s a larger school thing too. Even more so when those larger schools are kind of in no man’s land.

They just sent out a request for applications on the listserv. Letting the whole staff go is tough. Those guys still have jobs more than likely in the district. I’m not sure where you are going to find places for new guys on staff. I kind of get letting everyone know they are going to let the new guy pick his staff but this ain’t college.

I believe Alex is the first name of Coach Mathews that was referred to earlier. His father was a big part of youth football for a long time and Alex was one of Coach Lucas’s first QBs. Unless something has changed West Middle feeds Collins. Again unless something has changed (and on this one I’m sure it has) Shelby Co used to have a self contained youth program similar to what HHS had. The Puss Greenwell Youth Football League was a big part of Shelby Co for a long time. Is Coach Shipley close to retirement? Does anyone know if this was a let go, resigned or if you don’t resign we’ll let you go deal?

Weight Lifting Class
I’ve always wondered this too as far as how many schools have it. I know MoCo does. I’m pretty sure Scott Co does. I think Scott Co has a zero hour, 1st and 2nd hour classes. When everything was going on with HHS last year it sounded like they were trying to get one. I’m interested to see how many of the school that made deep playoff runs have one.

Cutter Boley (Lexington Christian Academy '24) Recruiting
Nope. From my understanding the kid gets it. He loves his teammates, coach and program. No reason to transfer. If you back off on him they’ll shove the ball down your throat. You come up he’ll throw it over your head or just make a good decision and make you pay.
