There were more than just the four on that State Championship team.

Harrodsburg abandoned the single wing in 1984. Coincidentally it was the first year Mercer beat Hburg in about 20 years or so.... So the Garrard Hburg scores from the previous thread were after Hburg left the single wing offense.

I especially like the part of............"when one is "beating a dead horse", no amount of action or argument is going to change the facts or the situation." Seems relevant.

I agree...however don't read this years passing stats as the status quo for Mercer. This was a year with amazing quantity and quality of running backs who could simply run at will. Mercer will adjust their offensive plan to accomodate the 5A defenses they will see next year. On a side note, I have the utmost respect for Highlands and Cov Cath. but IMHO I don't think either of these programs would dominate this or last years Russell squad. I happen to think that Mercer beat one of the better teams in the state Friday.

Then you were getting a hot dog on the 54 yard TD run. I've said this earlier...there were fast kids all over the field from both squads. Jackson played with a separated shoulder, Clark with torn meniscus (PAINFUL!). This game was less about speed and more about guts, heart, and desire.

I doubt any of next years 5A teams would dominate the Devils. Yeah....I have no doubt. ....and Titles are forever.

Mercer's coaching staff was so concerned about the wind, they even took pitch sweeps out of the game plan!! However, Mercer only attempted 1 pass and even at that their QB threw it away because Russell sniffed out the screen play. (..and Wills blew him up!) So it may be premature on your part to say they CAN'T throw the ball. WOULDN'T (yesterday) is probably a little more accurate.

You are right on this one. Some parents of players in the STATE CHAMPIOSHIP GAME did not get to the stadium until the end of the first quarter!!! Absolutely RIDICULOUS. Oh, and the fight was right in front of us. Good one too.:fight:

Congratulations to the Danville Admirals on another title game. Sorry it didn't go your way this time. We were all pulling for you in Mercer. You guys are the flagship program of our area and you gave all of CKY a reason to be proud yet again.

The "D" in this Devils team stands for defense and they demonstrated that in a big way today. By FAR AND AWAY the best defense Mercer has seen...well....since the last time we played you. I think we would have been better served to have let Kasey take over the game with the run Thank goodness for us you didn't. Any opinions as to why? ...the effort and heart shown in this particular game will always be remembered as such. Can't say enough good things about the Russell players. Awesome display of effort and guts.

Starting a thread about an asterisk next to a State Championship that is not even 12 hours old is sad and tasteless. It's not a debate my friend, it's a never ending search for an excuse. You can have your asterisk..... We'll take the title, ring, trophy, and record book. :sssh: We earned it against a program with a lot of class....and I hope you don't ruin my opinion of Russell by saying you are a part of that program. The folks I met today from Russell, sure didn't give any indication of stooping this low. Good luck in the future RED DEVILS.:devil:

I can see an argument for forward progress being stopped, but just watched the replay and he DID get the ball stretched out over the goal line, where it was consequently batted directly down beside #75 who was laying in the endzone and just gathered it in. Maybe shouldn't have been ruled a fumble after all.

Jackson is fast Frazier is fast (if you happened to notice the giant replay board...he was streaking to the ball. Fast enough to make Cory try to plant and change directions.) They are both fast....MOVE ON!!

Russell folks...it's been a pleasure. Be proud of your gutty class kids and your tradition rich program. We were proud to have battled you guys in a game that could have gone either way. Good luck in your new district next year. I for one will be pulling for you.:thumb:

First of all....thanks to all who refuse to take away what a group of hard working KIDS accomplished. This thread is lacking in class, but expected. Westsider.....you can put an asterik square in the diamond on the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RING for all we care!! These young men worked for this title and will be proud of it regardless of who tries to tarnish it.
