The answer to this question can only be answered by the Athletic Director of the school hosting the game. Remember this, when you have a player with the ball being closely gaurded, one official will officiate this match-up...which means that the other official has to watch the other eight players. It would be nice to have two officials sharing the duties of watching these eight players, especially with the movement that takes place such as picks being set, posting up, cuts through the paint, etc... With the athletes in the high school game today, there is more movement, more screening, more skip passing and more three point shots taken then ever before, not to mention the number of deflections that has become a popular statistic. With all of the full-court pressing, reaching, hacking, etc...it is very difficult for two officials to watch 10 players on a consistant basis and call everything that needs to be called in a high school basketball game. Some high school games are played as well as some NAIA and Division II and Division III games. This is why you see 3-Officials on all of these games at these levels as well as the Division I level. With all of this said, the KHSAA has mandated that all Post Season Games are to be officiated by 3-Officials. The cost for 2 officials in the 16th Region is $130.00, that's $65.00 each. The cost of 3-officials for a game is $55.00 per official which is $165.00. The total cost for 3-Officials is just $35.00 more. ALSO: The 16th Region Officials are paid less then any other region in Kentucky. So for thirty more dollars, you get an additional set of eyes to help clean up the game. That's a pretty good investment. If you have 10 home games in a season, that is just $350.00 per year to have 3-officials on everyone of your games. Ashland and Fleming County are the only two schools in the 16th Region that do this. All other schools use 3 officials on a minimum of 4-home games which is a rule set by the 16th Region Athletic Counsel/Policy Board. The sad thing about 3-Officials is that someone is still going to complain about how the game was officiated but that is o.k., because that is part of it and officials must have thick skin to officiate and to read some of the things that are said about them on BGP's. How many times have we heard the losing fans at the game, out in public or on BGP's say how well the game was officiated. My guess is ZERO. It took 35 post on this thread before the refs were mentioned by a member of this post. NOW THAT MIGHT BE THE BIGGEST RECORD ON HERE. Hope this answers a bunch of questions. P.S. GORADIO has applications for any one that wants to get out and join the officials association and find out how tough it really is at floor level with all the movement. For all of those wondering, welcome to "Pre-Game 101"...(no tuition required for this class). In warm-ups, both teams, all players participating can dunk, snap the ring, hang on the rim or whatever their coach(s) will allow. However, all of this must come to an end at the 15 minute mark of warm-ups when the officials take the floor to observe the players. If a player grasp the rim or dunks, he/she will be given a technical foul. This goes in the scorebook as a team foul, a personal foul to the guilty player and is a in-direct technical foul to the head coach. The head coach is also put in the seatbelt rule, meaning he can not stand to coach and he has lost the opportunity to be in the coach's box. The coach can only stand to applaud a play and to call a time-out. Hope this helps all of those wondering.

Your right, all refs should be mature and they should also be thick skinned to do their job. I believe that all BGP'ers should be mature as well. Last but not least, I think adults laughing or promoting student athletes to disrespect refs is not mature and very unsportsman like. Does anyone even care about sportsmanship anymore? This might be a good title for another Thread.

So the best thing the refs can do is what? Let'em play, call every touch, bump...this would be a good "poll" "How would you like to see the games called?" There is a good chance that consistancy will never happen on a game to game basis. There are thousands that officiate across the country and they all call different. We must only hope that a game (singular) is called the same from start to finish. This is consistancy. The players and coach's see how the officials are calling the game (singular) in the beginning, then adjust to the officiating in hopes that it is called the same the entire game. Some refs call it close, some make tic-tac calls and some just call the obvious, protect the shooters and keep the game under control and let the kids play. If every bump was called, the Varsity Game would be played by the J.V. players...The fans probably don't want to see two J.V. Games...just an opinion.

Just saw the article in the Daily Independent and noticed that only two people officiated the game. Sounds like from previous post on this thread that a third official could have possibly helped. I would venture to say that with the speed, athleticism and basketball ability that both of these teams have, the best place to be to make all of the correct calls would be about mid court and six rows up where one would have broader vision. Example: IF one official is watching the ballhandler and the person guarding the ballhandler, this would leave the other official to watch the other eight players. Imagine eight players moving without the ball, screening, posting, in and out of the paint (three seconds), cheap shots, etc... Not defending the officials, just simply providing some food for thought.

I think it would be best to make sure that the score keeper and timer improve their skills before we try to add more confusion to the scoring table with a shock clock operator.

Excellent post Shooter, I would think that #2 should be listed as 1a., 1b., 1c., 1d., and 1f...then 1, 3, 4, and 5 would be 6-through-9.... Ouch...this should make for some interesting head spinning.:confused:

Remember that warnings are not necessary once the game starts. In the pregame meeting with the team captains from each team and the two head coach's, the officials read a sportsmanship card that is required by the KHSAA. This is the warning for all players and coach's. About throwing the ball over the backboard and getting a warning...this should have been a "T". It clearly states in the rule book that this is a delay of game action that is penalized with a unsportsmanlike technical foul. It also indicates that this is showing up the officials for the call they made. Don't hate the ref...hate the rule!

Are you sure? This is the boys thread...I thought the score you posted was the score from the girls game. Just curious. Either way, Raceland did advance tonight in the 16th Region All "A" Tournament. Raceland will play host to Elliott County on Saturday Night in both the Girls and Boys Championship Games.
