I have often thought about officiating. What is the process to become an official?

You have got to be better than what the 10th & 11th are putting on the floor!

I admire anyone, that wants to Official a KHSAA sport. It's a thankless job, with nothing but scrutiny and negative comments.

Pursue your goal, do your best and keep the comments in perspective. Best of luck.

That is the state's best, try going to a NKY game or to the mountains.

If that is the best, it doesn't say much for our state.

The BBA (Bluegrass Basketball Association) is one of the best if not the best officiating associations in the state, in my opinion. This association has the cream of the crop, the best of the best, the guys at the top of this group are very, very good.

It seems like w/the new guys in this association there is a bit of a drop-off, a significant one. Officials seem to not have as much experience reffing as they used to, not as much teaching to the new officials, etc. are a few reasons for the decline in basketball officiating across the entire state.

Officiating is not an easy job at all and each night you face criticism. No matter what, one side is always going to be upset w/you, no matter how good you are. Good officials are passionate at being an official, the ones who do it for the money are the ones that hurt officials.

:thumb: Great post STIKE ! Officiating definately is a tough and thankless job. I admire anyone that is or wants to be an official.

From my observations, it seems that a lot of the new guys are not former players. In my opinion, former players make the better referees because they have experienced most of what they are looking at on the court. I think it helps with instinct.

I think they also deal better with the players and coaches in confrontations.

This is the best thread I have ever read about officiating. Well put smoke, Tubbycat, and notetaker. I strongly agree with all of your points.

Lady bear, just let the kids have the spotlight, keep that in mind. Be fair and let the kids improve, be open minded. If you can do that, you will be great.

A quote from Rick Chasteen concerning this past year's holiday tournaments and the need for officials, especially good ones.

Rick Chasteen, who assigns basketball referees for 10th and 11th region games, had a chore finding enough whistle-blowers for all the holiday tournaments. The short-term workload for Bluegrass Basketball Association officials is mind-boggling. This week there are 214 boys' and girls' games requiring 451 refs. Next week there are 173 games requiring 369 refs. As Chasteen pointed out, if every team in the Southeastern Conference plays 30 games in a three-month regular season, that's 360 total games, or 27 fewer than BBA officials will work this week and next. "I thought that was funny," Chasteen said, "because if you don't look for humor in these things, you may not survive."

LBM, being from Bracken County, you would work out of this association. This is their website.

I think we need to go back to the old school days when we only had two referees call games. With 3 calling games there are alot of lazy refs out there that are asleep most of the game only to awake when its time to collect their check.

Back when we had only two, the quality of the refs were better because they worked harder at their craft. The play was as physical back in the 70's as is today and two refs were sufficient. Sure calls were missed with two, but there are as many if not more being missed today with 3 refs, and with three the referee cost to school athletic departments is 33% higher.

I say we eliminate the third ref, take that 33% savings that all the schools will have, and spend it on the kids for uniforms, shoes, equipment, or developmental programs!!!!!!!!

I am for boycotting the 3rd ref!!!!!!

I have often thought about officiating.

You now qualfify for the 16th Region.
