I agree, sportsmanship ( and a lot of other general life teachings) should start at home but the honest truth is that coaches/teachers spend much more time with these students than most parents. I have seen kids from disfunctional homes overcome the lack of teaching from home and a coach who is a quality person be able to guide those kids to become outstanding citizens...And conversely, I have seen players from very good homes act like absolute idiots when on the field because they emulate their coach. Does it really start at home??? I'm not so sure anymore. Note to all coaches, please respect the fact you have a greater influence on a childs upbringing and future than you may realize....AND it's about MORE than wins and losses.

Another thread that dealt with a particular teams sportsmanship or lack of was closed. Let's try to keep this one open by keeping examples general and not bashing a particular team or school or coach. Where has sportsmanship gone in high school athletics, particularly baseball??? I have seen taunting and such more so this year than I can remember. The taunting I have seen in high school baseball is out of control and would not and has not been allowed in other sports.(for instance celebrating in front of opposing fans and teams rather than their own) Thoughts???

Of course it makes sense. However, because somone's definition makes sense does not make it right... and BTW, the sarcasm is not needed. BTW, I'm glad my sons don't play for a coach that allows either "dirty or cheating" plays...No matter how they are defined by some, they are both classified as wrong in my book.

Why do we accept it as just the "nature of the beast"??? Isn't coaching about more than just what goes on , on the field??? What kind of life lesson is this teaching his players???

I'm not sure that question is relevant in this case. Coach J told his players personally that he had applied.

It is a legitimate question now that it is in the correct context. It was not when it was in a thread talking about Cobb going to Henderson Co. I cannot speak to Jackson's thought process, but I do know he has ties to the Henderson area and without a strong tie to Pikeville was looking to a bigger school. Maybe Coach J will chime in.
