No disrespect to Zac or any of the Boyd Co team, Tiny...but you kind of make my point...The County needs more than Zac Wilson to win this game. Other teams have illustrated (some in a very graphic way), that if you contain Zac, you tame the Lions. I hope BC proves me wrong. (Ashland may need the points...lol)

I really want to see Boyd (5-3 / 3-0) take this game, but in looking at what GC has accomplished in their 5A Class at 6-3 / 2-2, Im not sure the Lions can pull this one off. Through those nine games, Grant has 3 rushers of almost equal statistical proportions: Soden, Spray and Benson all rush for an average of 5+ yards per carry. As a team, GC averages over 200 yards per game. QB Soden also averages 16 yards per pass completion and has thrown for nearly 900 yards with 10 TDs and 4 picks. Defensively, they have kept their opponents to less than 100 yard rushing per game on the average and they have a secondary with 10 picks for the season. (Justin Mertz has half of that total with 5). Boyd just seems too one dimensional and thereby easy to predict. GC 27 Boyd 21

Same here, Watusi. As Ram also reported, the Raceland/Russell game will be played on Friday with Halloween moved to Thursday.

You may have captured the whole spirit of this game in just a few words CC. Although I don’t believe Raceland players will take this game lightly, McGlone is a master at ball control, plus this being a home game for the Devils….Raceland better come out swinging and not let up until the final horn.

As to be expected, much of our bulletin board conversations are about an upcoming game, prognosticating, comparing stats, and so on…and we can easily ignore the fact that many of these young men have great success in areas outside of football. Attached is a link to an article which appeared in the Daily Independent this morning (front page too, I might add) about one of our Ashland Tomcats. Evan Holbrook, two year starting center for Ashland, has had a short story published in an anthology entitled “Not From Around Here Are You”. The story, “The Twilight Runners” was written during Evan’s participation in the annual Governor’s Scholars program last summer. The day Ashland played Woodford Co., Evan had been invited to attend a formal book signing in Cincinnati. Unfortunately, the scheduling conflict forced Evan to choose which event he would attend….fortunately for the Tomcats, he chose to stay and play an instrumental role in Ashland’s district win. Something tells me Evan will have more opportunities at book signings. 3 to 1 underdogs...I thought it would be more than that by now. I like seeing these polls...it makes for an interesting thread.

Having seen both teams first hand, I doubt if Raceland will simply line up and run straight ahead. That strategy is certainly in their toolbox, but there will be a myriad of formations thrown at the Devils in this game…if the finesse game isn’t productive, the power game will be. Now, if Russell actually DOES show up with a warrior’s attitude, things may get interesting. Since I have only seen one of Russell’s game this season, I don’t know if the Devils have that in them. Creativity and Russell just don’t belong in the same sentence together. I consider Russell to be very much like Ironton the in regard that they don’t do a whole lot of different things, but what few things they do, they do it to perfection. I would like to see Russell actually attempt an onside kick when they do that goofy mid-field huddle & twitch before each kickoff. If they win the coin toss, and defer to the second half, that may be there best opportunity to try it.:sssh:

I don’t know what more you could ask for in a high school football game. The stakes are high and the competition will be fierce. We have a program with a long standing tradition of quality football and one which is emerging as more than just a “one hit wonder”. The Eagles are showing signs of consistency in having solid teams over the past few years. There is a perfect balance of respect and animosity…can’t wait for kickoff.

I agree with a couple of your observations. Matney teams do play against Ashland very well much of the time…believe me, we know this in A-town, and that goes back to his Sheldon Clark days. To some extent, I agree about your reference that the Tomcats struggle against a physical brand of football too…with the caveat that the opposing team is physically much, much bigger. It was an eye opener when the Tomcats scrimmaged Campbell Co earlier this year, and we had a tough time against Bryan Station. Now…I definitely believe this group of Cats DOES like physical play and they don’t back down…but when you have 6’0” 250lbs going against 6’4” 300lbs…well, you get the picture. I believe our good friend JCAlumi76 stated in post 28 of this thread that: “They (JC) have good size, but by no means are they huge. They do appear to have more speed than most offensive lines but they are well coached by arguable one of the best Line coaches in the state in Tony Burchett. I would say that Ashland has more size up front than JC.” When I peek at the JC roster, it looks like at least in terms of size, Ashland will match up well with the Eagles…just another reason to think this is going to be a very exciting game to witness.

Russell is a suburb of Flatwoods (or is it the other way around?)...still both are in Greenup Co.

LOL...I must be bored too....Im writing in this thread:lol: But...yes, we celebrate Halloween. I live about 4 blocks from Putnam Stadium and we generally have over 200 kids "trick or treat" us in this neighborhood.

That's the word, yes. Had Friday's game been moved, Ashland typically pushes it to the following Saturday. FWIW, there is another important game on Thursday...Ashland's freshman squad plays in an annual Kiwanis Bowl pitting Ashland against their Russell counterparts...

Not the kind of stat I like to look at, but FWIW, there are others in worse shape than Lewis County's 65 points scored this season: 1A - Bishop Brossart - 40 points 2A - Leslie Co - 54 points 3A - Webster - 52 4A - Atherton - 55, Breckinridge - 40 5A - Waggoner - 62 Good luck to Lewis and these other struggling programs...I sincerely hope things get turned around.

With the Eagles scoring so many touchdowns, I’m sure there has been no need to even attempt a field goal. I couldn’t help but notice that Trent Davis has accounted for 32 points in PAT’s…I don’t know how many he has missed, if any at all…but if he is truly a FRESHMAN, as the roster lists…that young man might have a state record before its all said and done. FWIW, 201 PATs is the career total in Kentucky, 97 for the season and 12 in a single game. What first got me thinking about JC kicking was how the game ended during the Eagles last visit to Putnam. The final of that game was 13 – 10 Ashland, but it was one of the best HS games I had witnessed in some time. During that season (2005), JC rolled into town sporting a 7 – 1 record and one of the leading rushers in the state, Ashland was 6 – 2. I know…that was then, this is now…but its interesting to note, that in 2008 Ashland allows an average of 17 points a game…JC, on the average, yields 3 points more at 20.

I would urge you to not be too judgmental on the fans Red Rambler…apparently, you are in a unique position, having attended both schools, and thereby loyal to neither. Your position is a bit more understandable now. FWIW, I have lived in Raceland myself, have had children who attended both Raceland and Ashland and can wish both programs well. My personal roots are in Ashland, and when those two teams play, I root for the Tomcats, but other than that game, always want to see the Rams succeed. The Raceland community loves their high school football…no ifs, ands or buts about it. For the most part, I believe we all have had some very civil discussions about this upcoming game. We are talking about football though…if you cant get passionate about your team and this sport, perhaps you can start a separate thread about the food drive contest...that’s a most worthy cause and everyone wins in that contest…even those with allegiances to both schools. :thumb:
