No question Beechwood and Covcath will have very good freshman teams next season. But let’s not forget that Highlands won the NKMSAA 7th grade division undefeated last year and beat both teams, CovCath twice I believe. Highlands 8th grade team has not been tested this season and that includes games outside of the NKMSAA against Norseman Conference teams.

I’m not sure who I feel more sorry for. The kid who has to live up to these grand expectations, or his teammates who are apparently lucky just to play with him. Does he block for himself and throw to himself? I assume he plays all the defensive positions too. I have to see this kid play!

Congratulations to Ryle and ALL of their players. Is it just me or would these 14 and 15 year olds be better served without adults telling them how great they are and that they’re the next big thing? The social media hype around children, by adults, is gross at times. Let them play, develop and go about it without a target on their back and inflated ego in their heads. And we wonder why so many kids transfer these days.

I haven’t heard that from anyone other than in the post you are referencing. Cooper smoked the Birds that night and it wouldn’t have mattered if they had sophomores or not. Highlands had no answer for Mayer and Campbell. That determined the game, not the kids age. Move on, no one is under the assumption Cooper had an unfair advantage.

At least the Highlands players’ face-paint was on point.

What is their total roster size? How can a 6A school be playing sophomores in freshman games and cancelling JV games. What’s happening over there?

Any idea why they played 8 minute quarters? I though 10 was the standard at the freshman level.

May be too early to tell just yet. Cooper has looked really good and I’d give them the nod so far. Ryle hasn’t played a formidable opponent yet, and based on common opponents I’d still give the nod to Highlands. But all teams have a long way to go and will no doubt improve. If Cooper beats Ryle I don’t see them losing a game.

Why does a school as big as Dixie need sophomores on its freshman team? Wasn’t that the case last year as well?
