  1. Happy for Brent. Bellarmine has become a Division II power. Bach will make positive contributions and generate some excitment within the Knights program.
  2. After being thumped by Beechwood in their season opener, the Panthers present their new head coach Kevin Gray with his first win by defeating Erlanger Lloyd 8-5 the very next day (per the KHSAA scoreboard). Congratulations to Coach Gray and his staff on winning their first one, and best wishes for many more to come.
  3. The Panthers present Kevin Gray with his first win as their head coach next game out with an 8-5 win over Division II Lloyd.
  4. Congrats to the Polar Bears!!! Newport is a tradition-rich program that normally produces competitive baseball teams. The Wildcats seem to be down this year, having been run-ruled by Pendleton County, Scott (no dishonor), Bracken County, and more recently Dayton. The Newport game is Bracken County's only outing. I can see them stringing another four wins together before meeting up with Harrison County on April 12th. The Polar Bears could spice up this year's renewal of the 10th Region "A" Tournament.
  5. He and the Colonels will be in Frankfort today to be recognized by the Kentucky Legislature for their accomplishment of winning the state championship. Formal rally at CovCath on Friday at 1pm.
  6. Your statement was that you never saw an instance of Long having a bad attitude. IMO Long has a bad attitude. As far as others go, it is a sad state of affairs when the players are permitted to talk back to their coach. I saw a lot of instances of coaches not being in charge of their programs this week. Jump passes, Pull up J's at first opportunity, no weakside help, Fouls committed 80 feet from their opponent's basket, attempts to constantly block shots, poor clock managment, etc. etc. Goes to show that talent will overcome mediocre coaching, and if these guys have good records they are perceived as good coaches.
  7. I thought it was quite obvious that he does not accept coaching and scowls at any criticism. In the Trinity game where he took two ill-advised shots, Billy confronted him as he came off of the court, Long literally and definitively hollered back at him. Hicks even pointed to the end of the bench as he removed him from the game. However, within a minute and a half, Billy put him back into the game. I thought it was quite obvious that he and Billy butt heads. Not a good situation.
  8. I'll stand by my post. CovCath had a track meet and a baseball game. Not sure what an LAX game is, but they might have had one of those too. Trinity 1269 boys. CovCath 573 boys (As listed in the tournament program). No Excuse. It's obviously not very important to them.
  9. Congrats to our Greenies!!!!!! Couldn't be happier for you guys. Will have to get out and see you play.
  10. Vs Scott County, Trinity struck me as being skinny and the Cardinals sturdy. The Cards do a great job of spreading the floor and letting their guards, and Gilbert isn't the only one, work their magic. Long is BIG, but not all that talented (my opinion) - young, and will be a bear in the future. Has a big time bad attitude. Scowls a lot and talked back emphatically to Hicks who simply hollered right back at him. Billy sat him for a minute and a half and then put him back in the game. NO ALL-Tournament voted for Long from me. DISMAL showing from the Trinity Students!!!!! DISMAL!!!!! A school of over 1200 boys can only muster half-section of students???? Congrats to those who showed up BUT shame on those who didn't. Is Trinity so success spoiled, OR such a one sport program that there is no interest in their basketball team playing in the state semi-finals?????
  11. My gut feeling says that due to the UK game and lots of folks leaving town, there will be plenty of good empty seats in the lower arena. Buy any ticket to get in and sit anywhere you want. The seats in Section 32, Row H, Seats 7 and 8 have been empty all week.
  12. He hit two just like that in the Clay County game. Reflects the hours he spends in the gym, ditto the floaters that he hits.
  13. Very unpredictable, and inconsistent. Tonight it was Bump night. If the ball handler initiated contact while driving and "bumped" the defender, even if on his feet, with hands up and having good position, they were called fouls against the defender. Both Schult and Schuh were victimized in this department. Several of Bo's fouls were self-inflicted. He tries to swat shots and is very visible in doing so. I think Schult is a pretty solid defender, and simply a victim of bad circumstances. Of course, with that said, Ruthsatz was the beneficiary of the same call at the opposite end.
  14. Didn't swallow his whistle on the Ruthsatz (phantom) foul of the 3-point shooter out well above the arc. How many times, if ever, in a critical situation are you going to see that???
  15. CovCath survived a 21-2 run tonight. They were up 31-21 at the 4:45 mark of the 2nd quarter and then outscored 19-2 to halftime, trailing 40-33 at intermission. Clay scored the first bucket of the second half to make it a 21-2 run, from which the Colonels rallied to tie the game at 44-44 with 3:43 in the 3rd quarer on a pair of Von Handorf buckets. Not the Colonels' best effort but a survive and advance game and a trip over the track game nonetheless. Clay was gritty. Farmer has nice touch. Their big/s caused CovCath problems inside. Ruthsatz was very much the Player of the Game, without him CVH doesn't get 18. Great effort by the freshman. Ben Heppler hit key shots and finished with 16. Bardstown is fundamentally sound and well-coached. Hope for an easy one, BUT don't expect it.
  16. Note the jump from 25cents to $2 for a Herald-Leader preview, now that they call themselves a "program."
  17. Because Johnson Central was allowing them to hold it for over a minute without pressuring until the late double-team on Holbrook.
  18. Disappointed that they didn't reward Chad's loyalty and dedication to the program. Has done a creditable job in a tough situation, and there seems to be potential for a brighter future. Sometimes going in a different direction is down.
  19. Mustangs situation not as dire as appears. Losses to CovCath, Trinity, DeSales, and Harrison County say we're not quite ready for prime time, but with the roundballers back joining the lineup things should improve. Mustangs could also use a few clutch hits. We seem to be putting the ball in play, but leaving runners on base. Better days ahead.
  20. Nate Verst has signed with Kentucky Wesleyan, not NKU.
  21. Vote of the coaches. There was a tie that caused the deviation from the normal 12.
  22. I'd take their facilities in a heartbeat.
  23. I don't think that any Class "A" programs are claiming that the "A" is on an equal plane with the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen State Tournament. We all realize that it is a statewide invitational for the lower half of the enrollment base of the state. We also realize that with few exceptions it is also dominated by mid-major programs capable of competing in the post-season district, regional, and state tournaments. We also feel strongly enough about it, since it is a statewide competition, encompassing all 16 regions (some stronger than others), played in a state tournament format and encompassing half of the teams in the state, that we do celebrate it as a "state" or state-wide championship. We think enough of it to celebrate it with the purchase of rings, hanging a banner in the gym and alongside a picture of the "State"/"State-wide" championship team. Why do you hold this against us??? We think it is a major accomplishment and are proud of achieving championship status in this competition. If the other schools do not wish to recognize us for our accomplishments, then so be it. However, if they win the L.I.T./King of the Bluegrass/or Republic Bank Classic and would want to do the same for their teams, if they think that success warrants it, I don't think there will be an outcry from the "A" Schools that they are out of line, or over the top. We might think that, but won't say it. Success within ones own program is measured in different ways. There is a picture hanging in the gym at Bracken County High School of the 1998 10th Region "A" Champs, and there should be one at Calvary Christian for their success in the 2009 renewal. These are major accomplishments for these schools, who realistically can't compete on a level playing field with the mid-majors, or majors year in or year out. At Brossart, when we win a 10th Region "A" Championship we print T-Shirts, but reserve picture on the wall status for winning the "A" State or winning the 10th Region post-season championship. Those things are challenging for us, and important to us, and worthy of recognition in our program. I wear a 2007 "A" State Champs ring, which I am extremely proud of, knowing the hard-work, dedication, and ability to overcome adversity it took to win it. It means a lot to us, and to NCC, and to Holy Cross, and to St. Henry. This is the level that we can compete at, and when we are successful we celebrate it. If you don't like how we view it, then turn your nose up to us and foo-foo our accomplishments, but don't hold it against us becasue we are celebrating something other than the one and only, unclassified, one-for-all and all for one, almighty KHSAA Sweet Sixteen State Tournament.
