If this is the team made up from the kids from St. Susanna last year, I totally believe it. They were unreal.

Haven't seen them yet. Heard they are pretty solid. The 8th grade group is as competitive as I've seen in the last few years. Usually there is 1-2 very good teams, this year there are 4+ very good teams and then 2-3 other solid teams.

With a few weeks left in the season, was wondering who everyone thought was the favorite at each level? I have seen most teams, but not all. I'll start. 6th: Gray 7th: Campbell 8th: Very competitive group (any of Ockerman, Woodland, St. Pius, or Highlands)

Pre-season??? If it is the scrimmage in the beginning of the year you are referring to then I don't think those results mean much of anything. Especially when Sam Vinson only played a few minutes due to injury. They will face each other soon enough. #2-4 could be any combination of St. Henry, Highlands, and Beechwood.

Have you seen a box score? How many did Vinson end up with?

Have you seen Highlands and Newport play this year? Curious as to your reasons why you predict the upset.

Define successful. .500 or better, sure. Qualify for regional tournament, perhaps, challenge for a region/state title.....no. Has it happened, yes. In my experience, you need those basketball only guys who maintain and improve their skill and basketball IQ, the only way to do that is to play and touch a basketball almost daily. You have 2-3 of those, then sprinkle in the strength and athleticism of the football players, that’s when you have something. This years Highlands team is a perfect example.

I don’t disagree at all. Kids should not have to choose a sport or be pressured by coaches to select only one. It also aggravates me when you hear stories about kids being told to choose out of fear of losing their position. However, if you look at highly successful programs, they have players who focus only on basketball, just facts.

This team is significantly better because of the hard work by the kids and staff. It also doesn’t hurt that you have 2 basketball only kids who flat out can score and live in a gym, either court or workouts. Don’t get me wrong, teams in the past have worked hard, but having multiple basketball only kids in each class has not been a thing in the past. The program is finally seeing results. Those familiar with Highlands sports can see the parallels between the basketball improvement and the baseball program. Basketball program isn’t anywhere near where the baseball program is, but very comparable.

Also, there are 2 very talented freshman, Will Herald and Coby Kramer, who are both basketball only. Future is bright.
