Kevin Newman has no business playing multiple days a week in the middle of the infield with this roster, even with India out. One of the classic Bell head scratchers is why you even have Steer start at 2B one day last week if you're just going to play Newman there anyway.

Sims is able to come in and close out the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, Friedl picks up his second hit of the night, steals second and then advances to third on a bad throw (amazing what happens when you apply the pressure). Friedl is then driven home on a sac fly by Steer. You gotta love some small ball! Reds are up 5-1 after 7.

Great outing by Williamson. 6.1 innings, 3 hits, 9 K’s, no walks. The homer to right doesn’t go out in many other ballparks besides Cincy and one of the hits was an infield hit.

Williamson strikes out the side in the 6th. 1 hit through six, he’s walked no one and struck out 9.

The Reds are currently 1.5 games back in the division. They are tied with the Cubs for the 3rd Wild Card spot. The Brewers had a very favorable schedule early on in the season. The Cubs recently had a favorable stretch, but are playing on fire no matter who they are playing. The Reds have a tough stretch in a couple weeks centered around the Blue Jays and may have the most favorable schedule between them, the Brew Crew and the Cubbies. If the Redlegs can't get back to playing inspired (I think they will) baseball, it doesn't matter who you are playing. The Reds need to get back to battling in at-bats. Way too many strikeouts recently. After the All-Star break they ran into the buzz saw of a ton of good pitching. Recently, they've seen pitching that is far from stellar and still loading up on K's. They need to get back into the mindset of stringing together a couple of singles, and being aggressive on the bases. Wrong sport here and I think his quotes get cheesy, but Mike Tomlin once said, "Pressure is constant. You either feel it or you apply it". The Reds have looked like they feel it lately. When things were going great they were applying it.

Welp... Time to get the Reds back on tracks and start a thread since none of you all can answer the call ?. The Reds start a 3 game home series against the Marlins Monday night. Start times are 6:40 on Monday and Tuesday and then a 12:35 business man special on Wednesday. The series is huge for both teams as they battle it out for a chance at the NL's 3rd wild card spot. The Reds are currently tied for that spot with the Cubbies, while the Marlins are only a half game back. The Reds are currently slated to have Williamson, Weaver and Ashcraft throw in these 3 games. There was a lot of scuttlebutt on Twitter (or X?) about Connor Phillips being scratched from his start today. Is he going to replace Weaver? Scratched for another reason? We shall see!

You’re usually pretty solid on your takes in this area, so this isn’t being a jerk but just curiosity… why do you think this? I know pops was phenomenal, but his son wasn’t the QB in MS either was he? I just know he wasn’t last year, maybe he has been before.

Agree on all of this. Unfortunately for Bell there will be people complaining about this that we’re unhappy he was pulling starters starters at 90 pitches 2 weeks ago.

I’m not sure where you get your information, but grading Benson as a below average outfielder is comical. You’re really going to compare CES’s couple of weeks of playing 1B sparingly to Steer playing it for massive chunks of the year, including learning it on the fly early on? I wouldn’t expect him to have a 1.000 fielding percentage after that, but it doesn’t make CES better, at all. Most scouts in the MLB project CES as a career DH. That says everything. Benson did have a chance at the plate in the 9th, and he didn’t get the job done. Maybe that works out differently if he hits a batter or two later, but probably not. While they both have perfect fielding percentages in the OF, if you think Steer and Benson are tracking down the same amount of balls on the run, I can’t help you…. add in the fact that your defense at 1B also got better and most managers in baseball make the same move. Also as previously mentioned by others, the move had more to do with base running than anything. If Benson’s speed scores that run, they win.

Exactly. There are fans in every sport that will nitpick every move a coach or manager makes that doesn’t pan out, but it doesn’t make that move wrong at the time. Bell put speed on the base paths to try to get an insurance run while upgrading outfield defense and infield defense by going from Steer to Benson and CES to Steer. I make that change up 2 runs later in a game every single day. If the game ended up being blown by a bad defensive play after a switch wasn’t made or CES couldn’t score on a ball in the gap people would complain about the speed still being on the bench. The manager can only do so much. In the 9th the leadoff hitter got on, there were 2 intentional walks, you had the bases loaded and stole 2 bases (because the manager made the correct move to pinch run then too). If you can’t score in that scenario you don’t deserve to win. Fans are the same way about his decisions on pitching, which I often scratch my head about as well. Same people stating he has to start letting guys later in a game and relievers more than an inning were mad he had a reliever go more than an inning last night. I wouldn’t have had Diaz go more than inning yesterday, but you can’t argue both ways everyday.

No, it’s not. It happens every year to someone. Not terribly long ago an AL manager filled out his lineup card wrong and played an entire game without a DH. Things happen.
