It was senior night for the Indians and Aumani Nelson scored her 1000 point. It was a great atmosphere.

Holy Cross was winning 22-7 after the first quarter. NCC hit some threes, Holy Cross missed some shots, and NCC just kept fighting. HC could not pull away and had a bunch of turnovers at the beginning of the fourth quarter, letting NCC get close. There weren't many fouls called, and the refs let them play, which didn't seem to favor one team or the other, but towards the end of the fourth quarter, each team had 2 team fouls, so NCC had to keep fouling to try to get the ball back. Aumani Nelson had been perfect from the free throw line in the game but missed the front end, making 1/2 with 16 seconds left and HC up two. Everyone should have known what was coming next. Caroline Eaglin drove down the court. HC had only 1 or 2 fouls at that time but did not foul in the backcourt to waste time. Caroline then missed the layup with little challenge since HC did not want to give them the plus one for the lead. HC got the rebound. NCC fouled Nelson again, who hit both, and the game was over.

Gibson played and had 25 points maybe. Holy Cross didn’t really have an answer. Megan did not play. Holy Cross came out pressing and trapping and had a lot of steals in the first quarter and went out to a lead but couldn’t hit a shot to save their lives. Notre Dame definitely beat them on the half court game. Notre Dame played a deep bench and was able to play high energy defense the entire game. I would say they played 9 to 10 players. Holy Cross played seven with the starting five getting the bulk of the playing time. Several seemed gassed by the end of the game which didn’t help the shooting. all in all while this is a nice game to have for momentum and bragging rights. It is a meaningless game. The district tournament is were the win will mean something.

Isn’t that the team that just had their 141 game win streak broke up last week? Great win Sacred Heart.

Anyone can go there. As far as the diocese goes, high schools are only allowed to advertise to their designated feeders. Years ago, there were different tuition rates based on feeder/nonfeeder, diocesan/nondiocesan, but now there is no difference in tuition, at least for feeder/nonfeeder. For example, a CCH representative could go to St. Pius and give a talk to the students about their school, but they could not go to St. Henry. And only NDA and CCH could go to St. Pius. But yes there is open enrollment to all diocesan schools.

Essentially, the "Big Four" of the diocese ( although St. Joe's has been down for quite a while, so it may not be considered that anymore) and Prince of Peace. CCH and NDA have by far the biggest feeder system in the Diocese, but it is still probably smaller than the 5 and 6 A public school feeder systems.

That is interesting because, looking at the Nifty Fifty and Massey ratings beforehand, they were ranked back to back. I would have expected a closer game. Does anyone have any details about what happened?

And if I believe if both HC and Brossart win their first two games they meet in the semifinals. It is really hard to beat a team three times in one year. #gauntletXL

Holy Cross had the running clock early in the third quarter and the starters were pulled. Fun fact about the game two sisters played against each other in the JV game and then in the last quarter of the varsity game. Kennedy Sturgeon, a 7th grader for Beechwood, and Avery Sturgeon, a freshman at HC even guarded each other. At one point five first cousins were on the court at the same time between the two teams.

NDA-HC rescheduled for Feb 3 per the scoreboard. I assume it is due to the All A regional getting rescheduled.

I should clarify Meyers did not play against HC in Berea.

Meyers did not play at Berea. The girls said they heard an angle sprain, but she was not on crutches and seemed to be walking around fine so I don’t really know. Holy Cross could not get a rebound against Brossart. They also did not shoot well again. I haven’t seen the box store, but Brossart shot a lot of free throws and hit a high percentage. It was a very low scoring game and at one point they had more points by free throws than actual field goals. I never like to blame refs, but I think even the Brossart fans will agree they were subpar. When they call a very tight game with lots of fouls, it is going to hurt Holy Cross because of their aggressive defense and they called a lot of fouls. For Brossart I don’t think they had the quantity of fouls, but Shewmaker had to sit about half the game because of foul trouble. Brossart is a solid consistent team. I think Holy Cross has a higher upside when they are hitting their threes and allowed to play aggressive defense, but they aren’t as consistent making for good games when the two play each other.

Holy Cross did not shoot well. They had a 13 point lead in the third quarter but let BB back in. There was foul trouble for both teams. Meyer for BB had two in the first quarter so sat most of the second quarter. HC had several in foul trouble also. Also the floor was lined for the college three point line. HC only made one three and I am sure it didn’t help Bb either. HC missed layups on transition. HC also had several kids who have been sick, so played with less energy than usual. Brossart played well during the run where they caught up and hit some shots. They could have won in regulation. They were up by two and HC missed a shot. BB came down with the defensive rebound. HC tried to tie it up underneath but got called for a foul with 6.4 left. BB missed both free throws. HC called time out. Johnson dribbled down the court into the paint and passed to Williams who was on the block and hit the layup to tie it. HC then won in OT. Hopefully they can get back on track for the next game of tournament in Berea starting on Friday.

The Indians did not shoot well. They forced tons of turnovers but didn't do a great job of turning those turnovers into points. St. Ursula did a good job boxing out and hit most of their free throws. It was not the Indian's best game, but they were still able to come away with the win. Next up is the Crosstown Catholic Challenge Monday at TMU. It will be a double header with St. Henry vs NCC at 6 followed by Holy Cross vs Brossart at 8. It should be a fun night of basketball.

Holy Cross was just too much for Lloyd. They struggled to get the ball up the court and didn't score their first points until the second quarter. The HC starters were pulled a few minutes into the third quarter when they went up by forty, and the JV kids got some varsity playing time. Kudos to the Juggs. They played hard and didn't give up. Holden-Hopkins, for Lloyd, is a nice player. Next up for the Indians Ursula Academy on Sat.

She played well. You would have never guessed she was a 7th grader. She will definitely be one to watch in the future.

They focus alot on high pressure defense, press and trapping. This leads to a fair amount of points in transition. They also shoot a lot of threes. Looking at the KHSAA stats from that game HC took 25 three point shots and Russell took 9.

Holy Cross matches up better with Cooper than with teams with a true big. It was a hard fought game. Holy Cross’s defense created a lot of turnovers. Both teams had a few fouls they weren’t happy about, but it is what it is. Nelson and Williams both had two either in the first quarter or early second quarter. I think HC ended up with three girls with four fouls out of seven that played. I know at least one on Cooper had 4. It just shows that the region is a little more balanced than it has been in the past.

Stalling or forcing Highlands to come out of their zone and play defense. As soon as they came out to play HC started playing also.

I know Corrine Blackburn is a stud volleyball player so obviously an incredible athlete, but she played really well particularly for someone who hasn’t played basketball in a couple of years.

Ryle will definitely get better every game. It is tough to rebuild when you lose the athletes they did.
