  1. The issues with being a ref is the ill informed, unsolicited and biased opinions of the fans. I ref football, soccer and basketball. Mainly because I truly enjoy being around sports and kids, keeping in shape and the extra money is a small factor. Take soccer. It is impossible to keep up with the athletes on the field, especially at the varsity level, they are just too fast for anyone not their age or the speed gifted. I am neither. I try to anticipate the break aways, but it is very difficult to stay with these kids. Nonetheless you have fans in the stands, yelling at us to keep up. I challenge those yelling to come down and keep up. It would be a sad program the day that I, as a 47 year old 280lb man, could keep up with those playing. Feet on the line on throw ins, goalie out of the box while kicking the ball they picked up although they have already let go of the ball, what constitutes a foul and advantage. You do get to a point that you compare the fun of being out there and the abuse you take, verbally. True, it comes with the shirt. I get that, that's why for the most part I laugh it off and move on. But what happens when it goes too far? I have been walked up on, threatened and invited to a meeting by my car. I have no issue with coaches yelling at me, they're fighting for their team and for the most part understand the rules so I say nothing about them. As one of the refs in the sport of choice, we are the ONLY non biased people in the stadium. I truly don't care who wins. Do I miss calls? Yes, and when I realize it, I am tougher on myself than anyone of you will ever be. Fans get worse every year. You can see in the news, fans and even kids going after refs. What would be the expectation then? We are trying to get younger people to join, but most are unwilling to put up with that kind of abuse. It is getting hard. Fans scoff at the idea that they, knowing so much and never being wrong, should put on the shirt and try it. Then have a little understanding for us. We are working and doing the best we can. Exiting the soap box, now.
  2. I have now watched the SK/Conner game and disagree that SK was off that night. Conner had a nice game plan and IMO, outplayed SK. They got away from what worked for them in the second half and SK, being a good team, made them pay. I think that Conner and SK are very close. Of course they lost, but I don't take from their effort by saying SK had an off night. Heck of a game. Conner will make some noise before the end of the year.
  3. The first half of this game was fun to watch. Back and forth, nice pace and Barnes couldn't miss. In the second half Conner couldn't hit anything. They got looks but couldn't hit and Barnes didn't get another shot until the 4th. The foul discrepancy was ridiculous in the 2nd half. 12 to 3 for Cooper and one of those was with 7 seconds left. Conner only went to the line once in the entire game. I realize that Cooper is a good team defensively but no way. McNeil on one play plowed through and landed on Barnes with no call. Actually he was awarded the ball, no call. On the inbounds Barnes put a hand on McNeil and was whistled for a foul. Not consistent. Not the reason Conner lost. They just didn't have another player to get warm let alone hot and couldn't keep up. Overall good game.
  4. This game was painful to watch. Conners offense had more standing around watching than usual. 4 kids standing while one tried to take his guy off the bounce. This team cant win that way. They need to run, attack and kick out. When they did that, which wasn't often, they got shots. Without much size they cant compete as a half court offense. Conner never got into the rhythm that served them so well last week.
  5. This one depends on which Conner squad shows up. If it is the one that played Cov Cath tough for 3 quarters then I say Conner in a close one. If it is the one that played the 3rd quarter, then Cooper wins going away. Conner can spread the floor with their shooters and although they don't have an answer for Hathorn if he is playing, this will keep them close. They can get hot quick as they did against Ryle. Should be a good game.
  6. I think that Conner, although they lost, can take a lot from this game. For 3 quarters they beat and/or played with the #1 team in NKY. That 3rd quarter was brutal. CCH came out with more energy, but once again there was a lot of selfish ball on the part of Conner resulting in bad shots and turnovers. I am hoping at some point this year the team realizes that they are 100% better when moving the ball. Barnes had a great game, but a lot of his points came off the bounce with a kick out to him which shows how this team has to operate. Great game to watch.
  7. Conner is best when they play together, sharing the ball. They couldn't buy a basket in the first half and in the second, there was too much one on 4 or 5 basketball. This team cant win that way. Movement and pressure is the best way for Conner to be competitive. When they do this they can give the top teams a game, otherwise they get blown out like they did last night.
  8. This is a tough one to call. I think they are evenly matched. JR is a big body that Conner has little answer for but against Cooper, Conner kept the ball from Hawthorne better than I thought they would. If Conner picks up the pace from tip off, I think they will be ok. Barnes is out again with an ankle sprain, but this team has shown the ability to rotate top scorers. I say Conner in a close one, regardless of who plays.
  9. This was a great game. I am interested to see the rematch as Conner was missing a starter, Barnes, with an ankle injury. His ability to hit from the arc was missed last night and Cooper did a good job on Scott. Excellent game!
