  1. The Simon Kenton Pioneers (5-0) continued their winning ways with a 65-7 beat-down of the Cooper Jaguars. This one was over early and next up are the Bluebirds of Highlands (2-3). Highlands is still trying to regain their lofty status in 5A. The Bluebirds have dropped three in a row, making the Pioneers prohibitive favorites on Friday. Highlands made of habit of playing 6A schools the first four weeks of the season. 3A #7 Lexington Catholic dealt a 21-18 loss to Highlands on Friday night. The Pioneers have scored 237 points in five games while allowing 74 points. Their wins have come against four 6A squads and one 5A team. Simon Kenton is looking like a good bet to run the table in the regular season. The #8 currently ranked Ryle Raiders await the Pioneers the last week of the regular season.
  2. I contemplated driving up this evening. I am very content that two JV games satisfed my addiction to high school football today!
  3. I look forward to the 'Neers visit to Louisville this November.
  4. My opinion is the play calling in fourth down situations may be a little suspect. That has been true all season. Also, not attempting to take the very makeable field goals almost bit Trinity.
  5. Manual coach explained their kicker wanted the field goal attempt and exhorted his teammates to give him the chance and he would take care of his end of the bargain. This outcome was a total shocker to me.
  6. A St. Xavier parent explained Moeller's offensive line wore the Tigers defense out.
  7. It was 14-0 St. Xavier after one quarter. It was 14-12 at the half. No speed to speak of on either side of the field. St. Xavier's JV personnel has changed immensely since the Trinity game. Coleman is now a starter for varsity per his father. Where was the QB Keegan Sullivan? Now the Tigers face the PRP Panthers this week.
  8. Elder missed a 24 yard field goal attempt with 16 seconds left in game. Rocks QBs split time. Sophomore Jutz looked better than junior McKean. Neither defensive backfields were stellar.
  9. The Bobcats look to go 6-0 with a win over Henderson County. The Colonels are 1-4 in 2017. Is this a Cinderella Story in the making or the result of a schedule which is proving not to be very strong? As one of only 5 unbeaten teams in 6A, I feel compelled to keep Ohio County on the BluegrassPreps radar. Henderson County, despite their current record, is the best program historically on the Bobcats schedule this season. The Colonels won this battle 55-13 last season and 35-0 in 2015. Will Ohio County remain relevant or fade away after this meeting?
  10. The Cougars lost to 5A Dixie Heights 28-21. The Thorougbreds beat 2A #1 Christian Academy of Louisville 20-15. Conner is now 2-2 and Newport Central Catholic is 3-2 in 2017. Conner won 27-14 in 2016 and 21-17 in 2015. These teams did not play from 2009-2014. NewCath beat the Cougars in 2007 and 2008. NewCath dresses 18 seniors on their 58 player roster. Conner has 56 listed on their roster with 18 members in the senior class. This Northern Kentucky battle should end with a Thoroughbreds victory based on NewCath's quality win over CAL.
  11. These "traditional" schools automatically accept students from Jefferson County's "traditional" middle schools. The coaches are allowed to visit these middle schoolers and may discuss the attributes of their programs. This adds a little spice to the series for these district 3 foes. Male is 4-1 with wins over Floyd Central (IN), #9 Ballard, 5A Doss, and most recently 4A #10 Western. The Bulldogs lone loss was to #1 Trinity. The Bears are also 4-1. Butler's only loss was to 2A #2 DeSales. The Bears defeated Bullitt East, Western, 5A # Fern Creek and Doss. Comparing scores of common opponents shows Male won 54-12 vs. Western while Butler beat the Warriors 43-6. Doss lost to Male 47-7 and Butler 38-14. I give Male the edge because of their performance versus Trinity, a 22-0 loss. The Bulldogs defense played very well. Recent history shows Male on 41-12 in 2016, 57-0 in 2015, 43-7 in 2014, and 42-21 in 2013. In fact, Butler has not defeated Male in more than 19 years.
  12. The Tigers steamrolled Central 42-7. The Panthers will be well rested coming off an open week. Both teams come into this district 3 matchup with perfect 4-0 records. In 2015 St Xavier won 21-13 and in 2016 St. Xavier prevailed 27-17. I like the Tigers to utilize their huge lineman and keep the ball out of Pleasure Ridge Park offense's hands.
  13. Back on topic of thread: Trinity never wore down the Lions. Champagnat tried two quarterbacks. Nick Bohn passed for more than 400 yards again and hit Rondale Moore on two nice bombs for touchdowns. Defense stepped up again. The two interceptions were huge. Herron, McDuffie, & Auxier did yeoman's work on defensive line. Cardosi and Hull were outstanding at LB. DBs allowed a few completions and the Lions did convert on a few third and long plays. "Bend but don't break" system works out again for Rocks. 20 wins in a row is nice.
  14. I am a Bob Beatty fan. His record is unsurpassed at Trinity. His ability to lead the Rocks to so many state titles and to secure the all-time series lead with St. Xavier is amazing.
  15. Many games are decided by the kick attempt on the point after touchdown. I am guessing you want to speed up the game. You desire more emphasis on the full offense for the outcome of the contest rather than a snap, a hold, and a kick by folks who usually play sparingly.
  16. Baseball fund-raising food event prior to game-hosted by Barbeque Cowboy at Founders Square (in front of cafeteria).
  17. More information about the Lions. Champagnat played 3 games to date. 8/18 they beat Hialeah (Hialeah, FL) 35-12. On 8/ 25, the Lions won 13-9 over Doral Academy (Doral, FL). Most recently, on 9/1, the Lions put the smackdown on Barringer (Newark, NJ) 53-12. There are 8 classes in Florida. Champagnat is in 2A, the second smallestdivision based on number of boys. They were the state runner-up last season.
  18. More from Trinity website: Visitors and fans at Trinity’s game this Friday against Champagnat Catholic High School (FL) are asked to make monetary donations as they enter the stadium. These donations will be added to special collections this coming Sunday in Louisville parishes. All donations will be sent to Catholic Charities for hurricane relief efforts. Checks will be accepted and should be made out to Archdiocese of Louisville with “2017 Hurricane Irma collection” in the memo line.
  19. It is unfortunate Trinity administration has declared a four hour travel limit by bus. A New Jersey school offered home and home as well as Georgia and a few others. Maybe someday. Trinity tries to "sweeten the pot" to entice Kentucky schools, with mixed success.
  20. My feeling is it is the opposite. The Lions want to play football and get away from mops, brooms, water, debris-an escape from the large cleanup effort.
  21. I agree. Covington Catholic's talent level has risen to new heights recently.
  22. From Trinity website: As of Tuesday morning, the folks at Champagnat Catholic remain hopeful that they will be able to travel to Kentucky later this week for our varsity football game at Trinity on Friday evening. We hope to confirm the game later on Tuesday or on Wednesday morning. There are a couple of items that Champagnat must still work through (including the reopening of the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport) as they bring their faculty, staff, coaches and students back together and try to reestablish their daily routines after such a devastating event (their school community has not been together since last Wednesday). We will keep everyone apprised as this decision process continues to unfold.
