This is where "MVP" and "best player" fork in the road. For example, in the state of KY last year I'd argue that Nick Ruthsatz was the "MVP" of the state -- and that Snider was the "best player." The MVP puts the team on his back and wins the region.

I'd argue that one of the criteria for a player to be considered MVP is that their team be in the mix for"best team in their respective region." Players on teams who are not in contention should not be considered for MVP.
