I know most of their kids and coach is a good friend, heck I worked hard for him to get that job at Spencer, knew if he had the chance he would turn that program in the right direction. Glad you love what their staff is accomplishing BUT lets allow them to win a district game first before you anoint people as the best coach in the region. If you said young coach, totally agree, and Coach Burns is probably tired of hearing it as well. I still do not think you give enough credit to the older kids on that team. They are doing a lot of good things that you never mention. Of course everyone likes the younger kids. Anderson is in trouble, I have been saying that for a while, can they right the ship, yes they can, still 4 weeks left to sort things out. Oldham is clear #1, Collins #2 and South Oldham #3 if healthy, but since you are discussing good coaches how about South and 3 regional titles under their head coaches belt, and a regional title for Gaither hard to deny those 2. Can Spencer be dangerous YES but so can about 3-5 teams, including another great coach in Jon Jones. I pull for Spencer I love your Superintendent, Coach, and glad they won.

If I were a betting man, and I am not Anderson will be the #1 seed and will play Shelby Co on a neutral floor and that is scary for Anderson regardless, and Collins will play Spencer at Collins also chance to be a good game in my opinion. If Collins is healthy I would take them as the #1 seed. A fact that Anderson is not playing well right now and Spencer is so they may pull out a win who knows.

In the 30th District they only play (1) time that counts for a district seed game, and the way it is set up is awful. Example this year Shelby if I am not mistaken will play all 3 games that are seeded on the road. I think point differential or points given up are the tie breaker scenarios. Standings now are Collins 2-0 (still have Anderson left) Anderson 1-0 (have both Collins and Spencer left) Shelby 0-2 have Spencer left Spencer 0-1 (have both Anderson and Shelby left) I believe that we are in for some great district tournament play in the 8th.

What a week for our teams in the 8th region as they picked up some impressive wins against non 8th region foes. Many people in the state took notice as our top teams have proven they are dangerous at Rupp, while our middle teams are capable of upsets on any night. January as I have said is a brutal month, you get kids sick, hurt and most of your parent complaints unfortunately and it doesn't matter if your team is successful to the January complainers. Weather has been pleasant but with that comes a lot of sickness. Big seeded district games and jockeying for position is taking place to see who will earn the right to play at the Roy in March. 1. Oldham County Colonels What a week for the Colonels. Biggest win the 8th region has this year over Trinity. The Shamrocks were down a couple starters but a win is a win they way I see it and the Colonels got it done. They then went on the road and defeated a banged up Collins team that saw Turner injure himself, so down 3 starters again. The Colonels wrapped up the week by defeating Henry County and getting to play on the regional floor. They continue to be led by the 3 headed monster in Gibson, Jones and Henderson, BUT do not sleep on the Larimore kid very capable of putting 20 points up. Defense is the name of the game for the Colonels as it always has been the last 20 plus years it seems like. The Colonels have Central Hardin, Shelby County and KCD this week. 2. South Oldham Dragons Neutral this week with no games. But you can bet Coach Simpson has put the Dragons through alot and will have them clicking on all cylinders upon returning to action. Getting legs ready for a stretch run and adding some twists on offense and defense is probably taking place in Crestwood. The Dragons hopefully are healed up and ready to roll. The Dragons have North Bullitt, Carroll County and Iroquis this week. 3. Collins Titans What a roller coaster ride for the Titans right now. Players are getting hurt and other kids are stepping up. They will be deeper and have some faith in other kids when others return. Can they gel in time when they get Fort and Feltner back is the question, and can D. Turner stay healthy? The Titans lost to Eastern and Oldham this week, both handily, but got a hard fought win vs Simon Kenton in the Roy. Another thriller from these 2 teams. Cochran continues to pace the Titans in scoring. 4. Walton Verona Bearcats This team has improved all year, and they are primed for being in my rankings for the next couple seasons. Deionte Miles the big sophomore is getting better each week. The Bearcats defeated Boone County their only game this week, and head to the All A vs. Somerset. That has the making to be a great tourney, and will do nothing but make the Bearcats better come tourney time in March. Their schedule has to get harder moving forward to test the players the next couple seasons. 5. Anderson County Bearcats This team is giving up way to many points and it has to be a concern for Coach Drury. They got a win over Central Hardin at home, and gave up almost 90 points to North Oldham, where Cobe Penny had 36 in the losing cause. That would scare me with him being really good and you still lose. The Bearcats have (2) BIG games this week vs. Spencer and Collins, both in the BURG. It is a chance to be the #1 seed if they can win both games. Whoever ends up the 2/3 will be in a crazy first round game. 5B. Spencer County Bears I could not decide who is #5 so I just with two teams. The Bears have chance to prove themselves as they go to the BURG this week. They got wins over Larue and Gallatin County this week, and saw that the Wildcats of Gallatin are not bad themselves. The Bears have a lot of kids that can hurt you and more are stepping up in games. This team will be dangerous come post season time. 6. North Oldham Mustangs This team is capable of scoring a lot of points and feature to fabulous guards, and in my opinion you win post season games with good guards. The Mustangs are the winners of 5 straight, and got wins over Anderson, Shelby County and Iroquis this week. Henry and Wheeler with monster games, but the Mustangs also got help from Rose and McCellan scoring in double figures at Anderson. The Mustangs have North Bullitt and John Hardin this week. 7. Gallatin County Wildcats Jon has him team getting better each week as they try to get back to winning the district and playing spoiler in the regional tourney. The Wildcats defeated Trimble and Owen this week and lost a close one to Spencer County. The Wildcats are led by Wilson who is having a great season. The Wildcats have Henry County, and Lloyd Memorial this week. I believe a win vs. Henry County and Gallatin is the #1 overall seed if they are not already. 8. Grant County Braves I have done nothing but sing the praises of Coach Utter, who I think is the coach of the year in the 8th right now. He has the Braves improving and playing better. The Braves only had 1 game but what a WIN it was, beating the Simon boys at Simon. Tuggle, Adkins and McClure with monster game in the win. This District tourney will be an awesome game every night. 9. Williamstown Demons The Demons got 3 wins this week over Calvary Christian, Trimble and of course Simon Kenton. The Demons are getting better and are hungry for a regional birth. The Demons had 4 in double digit scoring vs the Pioneers and were led by Stanley with 20 points. The Demons host the district tournament and the band will be pumped up! 9. Simon Kenton Pioneers Tough week for the Pioneers. Lost 2 games to district foes, and a hard fought game to the Titans making it 5 straight The Pioneers are fighting still after seeing them Saturday and that says they believe in the process I think. They are dangerous if they can pull it together by end of the season. They have Dixie Heights, Harrison County and Boone this week. They are led by Hawkins and Kelch both around 13ppg. 10. Shelby County Rockets The Rockets defeated Franklin County at home, and lost to North Oldham and St. Xavier this past week. They are playing at Western Hills this week and Oldham County on Friday for homecoming. Jordan Armstong and TJ Robinson seem to be the consistent players for the Rockets. This team still can be dangerous come tourney time. 11. Henry County Wildcats The Wildcats got some revenge and defeated Eminence this past week in a district seed game. They split the next 2 games, a win over Trimble and a loss to Oldham County. They have Gallatin County and Williamstown this week. Hinkle keeps pacing the Wildcats, he had 26 against Eminence. 12. Eminence Warriors The Warriors lost to Henry County and defeated Carroll on OT. They have Owen, Spencer and Carroll County again this week. They are led in scoring by Kemyrn Jenkins who is averaging 27.9 ppg one of the tops in the state. 13. Owen County Rebels The Rebels defeated Carroll County this week and lost to both Gallatin and Woodford County. The Rebels are having a hard time getting consistent scoring. The Rebels have Grant County and Eminence this week starting tonight. They are led by Mcnally and Tackett in scoring 15-177ppg respectively. 14. Carroll County Panthers This Panther team is hard to figure out for sure. They have lost 9 straight, and last week lost to Eminence and Owen County, district seed games. They have South Oldham, Ryle and Eminence again this week, The Panthers are led by McMahan in scoring at almost 19ppg. 15. Trimble County Raiders Been a long year for the Raiders. They have lost 10 straight games. This week they lost to Gallatin, Henry, and Williamstown. The Raiders have Western Hills, Frederick Fraize and Brown this week and hope to pick up a win. We are pulling for the Raiders to get one!! Grieshaber continues to lead them in scoring at 10ppg.

As I said earlier in the 8th region recap, its not a winning formula in Lawrenceburg. Those Anderson teams have to grind you, be physical with you, and give you one opportunity to score. This is a major problem that I am sure they are addressing to good of a staff not to.

Lots of games being played in the 8th region this past week with district rivalry's and the ALL A taking place. Congrats to the Walton Verona Bearcat's on winning an exciting tournament this week and good luck representing the 8th region this week. This region is definitely top heavy with 4-5 teams, but the middle of the region I think will play a big role in this year's regional tourney. Hard to believe but we are only 6 weeks out of district tournament play. Whoever is able to get hot like Aaron Rogers has will punch their ticket to Rupp Arena. 1. Oldham County Colonels - They have won games that have been placed in front of them against teams from the 8th region, and they have captured the #1 seed in the 29th and will face Trimble in district tournament play. Wins over Spencer and North Oldham this week, both on the road and hard fought wins. Oldham has a monster week against Trinity,Collins and Henry. I would love to see the Titans healthy for that one. The Colonels keep having balanced scoring from a lot of people. 2. Collins Titans - I like this team that Gaither has, if healthy I may have them in the #1 spot. They have faced a lot of adversity and just keep winning games somehow. They beat South Oldham and Shelby without 2-3 starters which is impressive. A big 3 pointer in the corner pocket by Cochran sent the Shelby game into OT, and they found a way to win. Neither them or South looked healthy, but the size of Collins worry's me for South if they meet again. This week the Titans have Eastern, Oldham and Simon Kenton. Pretty tough road! 3. South Oldham - The Dragons have been under the weather these past 2 weeks, but seem to be healthy now moving into a big stretch of games. They still managed to beat Simon Kenton and Frankfort this week. Beating Simon impresses me considering the size advantage that Simon has. The Dragons have to find others that can attack the basket besides Griffin if they want to win games moving forward. Dragons are off for 9 days until they play North Bullitt, a good chance to heal, rest and get better. 4. Anderson County - The Bearcats just seem a little off, they got a win over Casey County and lost to a good Perry Central team this week, but they are giving up a lot of points, something I am not accustomed to seeing in Lawrenceburg. They have North Oldham and Central Hardin this week both challenging games AC. 5. Walton Verona Bearcats - Winning an All A is hard, especially in this region. I know that a lot has been mentioned about other young players on here, let me tell you that Walton has several and will be a thorn for a while in the 8th region. They have only (1) senior and have 9 sophomores, and Clinkenbeard is a junior. With the size and guard play this team could make life hard on the top 4 I have above them. Wins over Trimble, Eminence and Gallatin this week with all being 20+ in margin. They will play the winner of region 12 which could be Somerset or Danville. Somerset beat Pulaski this past week so they could have their hands full. Good luck Bearcats!!!!!! REPRESENT the 8th!! 6. Simon Kenton Pioneers - The Pioneers lost 2 close games this week, Cooper beat them 4 and South Oldham beat them 2. The two teams that beat them very well could be at Rupp so if there is anything as impressive losses these qualify. With the size this team has, I would not want to play them in a sudden death game like the regional tourney. Simon has 2 district seed games vs. Williamstown and Grant County this week. Then they play Collins @ Henry in a rematch of last year regional first round game that was a good one. 7. Spencer County Bears - The Bears only game this past week was a close loss to Oldham County. The Bear's seem to struggle to score when they play better teams, but they are playing good defense in those games as well. They have Larue, and Gallatin County this week, both will be challenging. Next week it will be interesting to see them and Anderson play to gauge both teams. 8. Gallatin County Wildcats - Wildcats made the All A regional final, where they lost to Walton, I really believe the game before vs. Williamstown had a lot to do with their performance. They looked exhausted and Walton looked rested, after all the Walton boy's had blow out wins in their games. This is what makes winning a regional hard on All A teams, not alot of depth and back to back games. The Wildcats have Trimble, Owen and Spencer this week, alot of games with Owen being a district seed game. 9. Grant County Braves - This team has exceeded my expectations, lost a lot to graduation, get a new coach, and have improved all year. Coach Utter and his staff have done a great job in their first year together. A shot in the arm moving forward in a competitive district for sure. They beat Montgomery County and lost to Pendleton County, two 10th region teams. The loss at Collins in OT is impressive, I know that Collins is missing pieces, BUT they were missing those pieces when they beat South Oldham as well. The Braves have Simon Kenton and Owen County this week as they get back into regional and district play. 10. North Oldham Mustangs -The Mustangs lost to Oldham County this week, meaning they will play the Dragons first round of the district tournament with one of those teams not advancing. They did get wins over Harrison County and Western Hills in the DMD classic. They have Iroquois, Anderson and Shelby County this week. I am anxious to see the regional games and how they compete outside the 29th district. The Mustangs have only played 2 teams in the 8th region which is odd to me. 11. Williamstown Demons - They lost a heart breaker to Gallatin in the All A tournament, were they led most of the game. The Demons have Simon, Calvary Christian and Trimble this week. Game vs. Simon will tell us more about this team 12. Shelby County Rockets - They might be 4-12 but have played a hard schedule, and would beat most of these teams in the 5-12 range in our rankings in my opinion. They played really hard against the Titans Friday in defeat then had to go play Warren East where they got a win, showing some toughness. Playing without Josh Edwards, arguably their best player as well. A team that will be very dangerous in a couple weeks. 13. Eminence Warriors -The warriors beat Owen County and lost to Walton in the All A this week. I look for this team to sneak into the regional tournament somehow, they have to many good players not too. Also Coach Brown has done a tremendous job with this group in his first year. The Warriors play Henry County and Carroll this week, two more district seed games. 14. Henry County Wildcats - Had an opportunity prove themselves this past week but lost to Iroquois and Bullitt Central. They look to rebound against Eminence, a team that narrowly beat them in December. The Wildcats also have Trimble County this week, but #1 Oldham on Saturday. 15. Owen County Rebels - The Rebels lost to Eminence in the All A this past week, and look to get back on track against Carroll, Gallatin and Woodford this week. Two old rivalry's and district seed games. 16. Carroll County Panthers - Hard to figure these panthers out. They have lost 7 in a row, and have Owen and Eminence this week, big seed games. The Panthers lost to Williamstown in the All A. 17. Trimble County Raiders- Can the Raiders get a win this week as they play Gallatin, Henry and Williamstown? They lost to Walton Verona in the All A this past week. Player of the Week: Charles Cochran of the Collins Titans. Charles had 25 in the win vs. South Oldham, and 21 in the win vs. Shelby County, including the 3 pointer at the buzzer to force OT. Impressive to lead this team with 2-3 starters out with injury and sickness. I knew we would have some good games in the All A, these 2 have been the most consistent teams this year, I look for both to be in the regional tournament in March. I will say they both are capable of knocking someone off, especially if Walton were to draw someone from the Gallatin district. I could see Walton giving Simon fits because they have a big to match up with Kelch.

I think distance does require the discussion, Spencer County to Simon Kenton for example is 2 hours, over 100 miles and that is using intestate. Regional tourney is at Simon Kenton next year in girls basketball. Budgets at schools, some teams pay for their diesel out of their accounts. Maybe not distance so much as money if you want the whole reason probably.

An example in western Ky, is region 1, they don't have hardly any teams, and a team can get to the region without having to win a game in a district. The 6-12 regions have to be adjusted some how, and yes a line has to be drawn, but any time a kid is on a bus for more than a 1 hour and 30 minutes is just to much to ask from kids in my opinion

What better way to get feedback on a much debated topic throughout our state the BGP. I am torn on this topic because it can mess/adjust regions that are loaded with history, but at some point we have to do what is the best interest for kids, and schools. I know I cover the 8th region a lot and have no idea of why some teams are in the 8th and why some are not in the 8th. Our region in my opinion should have Western Hills, Frankfort and Franklin County, and Simon Kenton, Walton, Williamstown, Grant out. I know what that would do the 9th region, it would be huge with 5 team districts for sure, so it has its arguments. I could see KCD coming to the 8th and Spencer County to the 5th. Just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts with some concerns.

Yes I like Anderson as #4 because they have a kid who can get hot and beat anyone, aka last year against Oldham in the semi's. Simon however is capable of winning a game but 3 in a row would be really hard at this point.

If everyone would read my opening comment in the write up it discusses issues as these. These first two weeks of January are tough. Especially if you have played in some big tourneys it is hard to get back into the flow with snow, illness, you name it. 8th region to me has 4 legit teams that can win it, the draw will be ultra important as it was last year. South has never played well at Collins in the past. It is all about match ups and I think when Collins has their two long athletic kids they are a mismatch waiting to happen. Hope all the kids heal up well and recover for tourney.

This past week stirred up some rankings in the 8th region as we witnessed exciting basketball across the region. This week starts the All A tournament and I believe it has the ability to have some close contests, with several teams having a shot at winning. The All A is being held at Walton Verona and will begin Tuesday. After reading all of the boards this week, I found myself laughing at posters, concerning who is ranked where, who is beating who, remember this we are half way through the season and a lot can change. Players will mature, especially young ones, unfortunate injury's can happen, and getting on that cold bus can make it hard to win road games. The teams that improve the most this month, will be there come end of February. 1. Oldham County Colonels- Coach Zerhusen has the Colonels in a familiar spot in my ranking. A hard fought win against the Dragon's on Friday catapults them into the #1 spot. They are getting a lot of contributions from the junior class, of Gibson, Henderson, and Larimore, but it seems as if the seniors are starting to emerge as leaders. Ismail Jones was really good against South Oldham, and Ryan Heelen continues to give them that spark when needed. The Colonels lost to Scott County on Tuesday, but those kind of games prepare you for March. The Colonels have Spencer on Tuesday, and last district seed game on Friday. They can wrap up the #1 seed in the District with a win. 2. South Oldham Dragons- Yes they lost to Oldham on Friday, Jo Griffin only played around 12-14 minutes in the game, flu like symptoms, just proving what kind of player he is. No way he should of played, but no way he is not going too either. Give the Dragon's credit they hung in there in a tough environment and proved they can still hang with the best in the region with their two best players not being really good. The Dragons have Collins, Simon and Frankfort this week,so a busy schedule indeed. The Dragons have made a 172 (3) point shots at a 42% clip, just crazy if you ask me. 3. Collins Titans- The Titans just keep winning, they have faced a lot of adversity this past week losing several key players to injury. It appears that Fort and and Feltner will be out 4-6 weeks with their injury's, and I am hearing the Dominique Turner should be back ready to go this week. The Titans have 2 freshmen that are pretty special and have played well at times in McKnight and Veil. They have a tough go this week with South Oldham and Shelby County. They got wins last week over Spencer County and Grant County. Charles Cochran is averaging around 14.5 a game for the Titans, and has a chance to be on my all region selection team at the end of the season. 4. Anderson County Bearcats- It is amazing how a team that is 10-4 is struggling? Last time I checked they have (3) guys averaging double figures, one of those is Cobe Penny 24ppg, and a POY candidate so I think they are just fine. It takes time to lose a starter and gain a starter to mesh out some kinks. I think at the end of the season they are dangerous to win this region. I worry about their depth and winning back to back games, aka last year. Penny looked wore out in the final. They got a win over Shelby County this week. They have Perry Central, and Casey County this week. 5. Simon Kenton Pioneers-Hawkins and Kelch are both averaging around 13-14ppg and are a mismatch for most teams in the 8th region. It is hard to gauge how good this team is with most of their guys being football players and playing 9th/10th region teams who are really competitive. They lost to rival Scott High and beat Ashland Paul Blazer this week. They have a tough week with Cooper who can win the 9th region and South Oldham to round out the week. I was told that Timmy Cottrell is no longer on the team and that is a big loss for the Pioneers. 6. Spencer County Bears-This team keeps improving and will get to prove how much, this week against Oldham County. I really like the play of Jacob Coke and Wheeler the 2 upper classmen. I agree that the Bears have some good young talent but lets not forget that Wheeler is a senior and an all region candidate and Coke is a junior. Replacing these 2 will be tough the next two season's. But the improvement of the younger players could take up the slack. The Bears lost at Collins this week, beat Nelson and Trimble County. Oldham and Larue County coming up this week. 7. Walton Verona- The Bearcats are hosting the All A this week and have to like their chances at home. They like most teams are a lot better on their floor. They only had 1 game this week and it was a hard fought win against Owen County. They open up the All A with Trimble on Tuesday night. If they win they get the winner of Owen and Eminence. Deionte Miles the big center sophomore is just getting better with every game, and he causes problems for a lot of 8th region teams. 8. North Oldham Mustangs-Their record might not show it but with getting Henry back this team will start to win some games, and may climb the rankings. The Mustangs lost to Valley and Waggener two very good teams and beat Whitfield handily this week. They will get to prove themselves as they got Oldham County Friday and Harrison County on Saturday. 10. Eminence Warriors- I have told folks about Kemyrn Jenkins, he is a player, 27ppg, but do not let that be all you worry about as the Warriors have (3) other guys averaging between 11-14ppg. They beat Gallatin, Williamstown and Evangel Christian this week. They are eyeing the All A tourney this week and will take on Owen County, a team that beat them by 2 a couple weeks ago. 11. Gallatin County Wildcats-Jon will have his team ready for the All A run this week. The Wildcats beat Carroll and lost to Eminence this week in a close game. The Wildcats are also led by Mason Wilson's 20ppg and Rassman's 12ppg. These 2 can get going on a win this All A region for Coach Jones. 12. Willsamstown Demons-Like every other All A team, the Demons feel as if they can win this thing this week, and I think they can as well. The Demons beat Grant County, lost to Eminence and Barr Creek Indiana. They will have the Carroll county Panthers in the first round of the All A. 13. Grant County Braves- This Braves team is getting better each week, they have high's and low's like most teams do. Right now they are unpredictable, and if they can figure some more things out can win their district again. They lost to Williamstown and Collins in OT this week. The Braves are hosting (2) 10th region teams in Montgomery County and Pendleton this week. 14. Shelby County Rockets- The Rockets have played a brutal schedule and only have 3 wins, but I still think they are very dangerous in their district. They lost to KCD in a heart breaker, and lost to Anderson County Friday where one of their best players was ejected in Josh Edwards. Edwards over Christmas had a 29 points 23 rebound performance against Johnson Central in the Rockets win. The Rockets have Collins Friday and it appears both teams will be missing big contributors. They also play Warren East Saturday in the State Farm Shootout. 15. Henry County Wildcats- The Wildcats got 2 wins this week over Carroll County and Lloyd Memorial, and are led by Zach Hinkle who is an all region candidate at 18.5ppg. The Wildcats have Bullitt Central, Iriqouis and Eminence this week, so a legit shot at 3 more wins. Consistency is what the Wildcats are after. 16. Owen County Rebels- The Rebels have Eminence coming up in the All A tourney. A tourney they have dominated the last several years. Coach Duvall knows how to prepare for the tourney and have their hands full with Eminence in the first game. They also have Carroll at the end of the week. Only game this past week was at Walton Verona and they lost a close game. They are led by Cameron McNally's 15ppg. 17. Carroll County- The Panthers are capable of beating some teams this week in the All A and being a sleeper to win it if they can show some consistency. They lost to Henry and Gallatin this week and open with Williamstown in the All A. They are led by Evan McMahan's 18ppg. 18. Trimble County Raiders-The Raiders lost to Spencer County and Hanover Indiana this past week, and play against Walton Verona in the All A tourney. Tough times in Bedford, the Raiders did get their first win over the break vs. St. Patrick. They are led by Troy Grishaber's 10ppg this season.

Don't think they will reach the top 5, its okay to be excited Cardsrule, Spencer has not been in the regional tourney in 7 years so we understand the excitement. They have a tough district to play in, where the district is held at Collins this year. Young players do get better, but they are that young players, and middle school season is almost over, they are used to being done about now. High-school is a grind, Desales is a good win, I give you that but overall the schedule is really weak, look at February and tell me how that prepares you? I still think Spencer is dangerous, I said that last year and they should of beaten Anderson first round. But top 5 just not happening this season.
