Those refs were horrible for both sides. The 8th grader Whitlock took three blatant charges on Penny and they wouldn't call it. The Anderson County people sitting around me looked down and smiled. Penny should have fouled out early in the third. It was almost comical. Penny just kept putting his head down and ran over people. Spencer was very lucky to get out of there with a win. Coach Burns needs to start getting a mention for 8th region coach of the year. He took a very young team into that environment and got the win.

Collins 2-0, Spencer and Anderson 1-1 and Shelby 0-2. Collins travels to Anderson this Friday and Spencer hosts Shelby in early February.

I Can see Collins, Anderson and Spencer all at 2-1. Not sure how tiebreaker works.

Big ?. If Anderson wins Friday, 3 way tie and could end up playing Collins again first round of District at Collins. If lose, Collins wins District and AC would play Spencer at Collins....WOW, how do they want the game to turn out.

Uuuuuhhhhhhhhh. Things are not good in the 'Burg when AC loses to Spencer County...and at home of all things. However many of us knew this was a possibility with the way the season has shaken out so far. 1st place in the district was in their control with all 3 district seeding games at home and having already defeated Shelby County, with Collins coming to the 'Burg Friday night. If they beat Collins Friday I think that makes a 3 way tie for 1st, everyone having beat Shelby and then all three beating each other. 1-4 record in the 8th region right now.

 

I wasn't at the game last night, had middle school games of my own in Lexington and missed it, but right after the game I talked to a player parent on the phone. He was at a loss and was very disappointed in the way AC played...the word "horrible" came up more than once. I think he said at one time, Spencer had two 8th graders, a Freshman and a sophomore on the floor at the same time. @Cardsrule1972 might can clarify that for me. IF that was the case, or even anywhere close, I'm not sure if that speaks more highly of Spencer Co, or more negatively of AC's performance.

 

A loss like this can do one of two things...it can fire up and motivate AC to dig deep, come together, get after their remaining opponents and find ways to win, or it can deflate them even further with bad play and more losses being the result. I hope Coach Drury and the staff can find ways to keep the boys fired up and getting after it, and the boys can keep grinding/working at it knowing they can win games with all out effort and smart play. There are a lot of good kids on that team and I hate seeing them struggle like this.

Then you clearly don't know what kind of team Spencer County has this year. Maybe you need to give Spencer County a little more credit. You are correct about the lineup being full of 8th graders and sophomores. Maybe...Just maybe those kids I've been talking about since this summer are the real deal and Anderson is not that bad. Your premise is that if Anderson lost to lowly Spencer County at home then they are clearly horrible is ridiculous. Come watch Spencer County play and you might feel a little better about Anderson County. The game was back and forth, both teams had to play with severe foul trouble. I know most of their kids and coach is a good friend, heck I worked hard for him to get that job at Spencer, knew if he had the chance he would turn that program in the right direction. Glad you love what their staff is accomplishing BUT lets allow them to win a district game first before you anoint people as the best coach in the region. If you said young coach, totally agree, and Coach Burns is probably tired of hearing it as well. I still do not think you give enough credit to the older kids on that team. They are doing a lot of good things that you never mention. Of course everyone likes the younger kids. Anderson is in trouble, I have been saying that for a while, can they right the ship, yes they can, still 4 weeks left to sort things out.

Oldham is clear #1, Collins #2 and South Oldham #3 if healthy, but since you are discussing good coaches how about South and 3 regional titles under their head coaches belt, and a regional title for Gaither hard to deny those 2. Can Spencer be dangerous YES but so can about 3-5 teams, including another great coach in Jon Jones. I pull for Spencer I love your Superintendent, Coach, and glad they won.

Card, I know you don't want or like hearing it, but sure as the sun rises in the east, AC expects to beat Spencer, it's just how is, and it's many more times than not how it works out. And in a season where AC was picked by more than a few as the pre-season favorite to win the 8th region, losing to a team that has two 8th graders, a freshman and a sophomore on the floor during the game just isn't the expected outcome or what AC people think should happen, there just isn't any way else to put it. And that is no disrespect to Spencer, it's just the expected "pecking order" if you will of the AC faithful.

 

Now, with that said I wish I could have made the game so I could discern better for myself the ebb and flow of the game and what lead to the loss. Was Spencer the better team and just beat AC? Did AC just have a very bad game and Spencer took advantage of a really off night? I can tell you what some AC fans told me (played horrible, should not lose to SC, etc.), but I have to take that with at least a hint of salt. It's obvious that SC has the ability to beat AC...they just proved it. And if you remember in my previous posts in some other threads, the way AC was playing, counting Spencer, or almost anyone on the schedule for that matter, as a win before the game was played probably wasn't a good idea. It's now time for AC to regroup, find what works, scrap what doesn't and as my mom used to say, "get some grit in your craw" and play with so much fire and intensity that it would scare the devil himself.

 

Now, congratulations are in order for Spencer on their big district win...cause it was a big win for them no doubt. I'm quite sure there is a lot of excitement going on with the basketball program in SC, something they aren't normally accustomed to and I'm sure it's a lot of fun for them right now. And all indications are this could sustain itself for at least 2-3 years what with the young talent they have on the team. Luckily AC has some young talent in the freshman ranks as well, one of which is starting to get more clock and assert himself on the varsity level, with some others we should start seeing some contributions from next year.

 

One things for sure, the 30th district is shaping up to be a dog fight, and someone may not be making the region tournament that expected to be there. These next 4 weeks could be very exciting.

Sorry--I never give coach of the year to coaches that have all the talent each and every year. Easy to win when you have all the best players. You should win district and regional titles. I look for a coach that doesn't have what everybody else has and wins. Spencer County may lose their first district game, but that will in no way take away from my belief that at this point NO coach has done more with what they have. Sorry that's just how I look at things.

 

Secondly, I give all kinds of credit to the two seniors Daniel Wheeler and Bryson Cannon. They are the heart and soul of our team this year, however, when they graduate we have kids that are going to slide into their spots and there should not be a drop off. With the maturation of the younger kids mixed in with the junior class next year will be the year when it gets really exciting for Spencer County.

 

Also, still think that Oldham is not clear cut favorite when everyone is healthy. That win over Trinity kind of lost it's luster when I saw that two starters did not play.

 

Finally, I don't think Anderson is in trouble. The team I watched play last night is a very good and dangerous team. Friday night against Collins might change some views.

When Collins is healthy, and they are far from it, they are hands down the best team in region. However, like stated, they are not healthy and I am hearing Turner was out again last night and probably Friday as well.

 

Spencer is solid, have some great young talent, but I have to agree, if they beat you at home, your not that good.

Anderson is still very capable of winning out, but there schedule is terrible and it is tought to get better when you are playing Model, and Bath out of region. Man up anderson.

"Pecking Orders" change year to year. I guess you need to quit living in the past. I don't evaluate teams and players based upon what they did last year or the years before. Every year is different. You make a lot of assumptions saying that this success might sustain itself for 2 or 3 years. Our middle school basketball program may set a record this year for winning championships at 6th, 7th, and 8th grade level. I would say Spencer County is loaded for the next at least 7 years.

 

"The Pecking Order" as you call it is getting ready to change. Just remember I told you first.

 

Finally, from what I observed Anderson has three very good players. One of them being a top three player in the region. Seems more than enough to be a top team. Maybe the coaching staff is not doing a great job this year. Drury looked a little befuddled last night. That "young coach" was putting it to him. Lucky for Anderson, the 8th grader Conley got in foul trouble or it could have gotten a lot worse. I can see why your Parent/Friend said that they looked like crap. Well there was a reason for that, it's called scouting and putting together a defensive plan to stop a good team.

 

I will agree with you on one thing--It's getting ready to be a dogfight.
