Curious .. is there an attempt to seed this field, or is it a blind draw(or somewhere in the middle)? I see Fairdale in the first game .. wondering if every thing else is blind draw.

All schools play a complete Conference schedule. If you want to pretend they don't, go ahead. Perhaps it is an antiquated concept, doesn't fit your idea of a modern championship, and there's no "printed standings", but it does exist. Good Luck to the Lady Panthers! .. justsayin

This^ I've had many people tell me I would be a good referee, and many have asked me to join them. I really enjoy reading and understanding the rules of the game (and yes, I do own the Rule book), and always give the stripes the benefit of the doubt. I feel I could handle the play of the game, the players themselves, as well as the coaches. But there isn't enough money (or love of the game) to put up with the venom that is spewed from the stands. I just couldn't do it. Most people don't know the rules, and think their admission price gives them the right to be a raving lunatic. And the idiocy of some of the comments in this thread confirms my decision.

Was this part of a boy/girl doubleheader? I see the boys score of Augusta 63 Bracken County 60. If so, what a great idea! It would be great if more schools adopted this idea. I know you would lose a gate, but you might attract other people who otherwise might not attend.

Rule 4-29 Kicking the Ball. Kicking the ball is intentionally striking it with any part of the leg or foot. You are correct .. it must be intentional.

The five-second call is one most fans get wrong. A closely-guarded player can hold the ball for up to five seconds, or dribble the ball for up to five seconds. However, the count restarts IF the offensive player either begins to dribble, OR ends a dribble. Therefore, a closely-guarded player MAY possess the ball for up to fifteen seconds WITHOUT a five-second violation occurring (hold the ball up to five seconds, begin dribbling (constituting a NEW five second count), then stop dribbling (constituting another NEW five second count), for a total of fifteen seconds). Fans typically go berserk when this legally happens.

I think you may have misinterpreted what was stated in post #16. It states Announcer should not report items such as "Number of baskets (two or three) by a specific player", not "type of basket". It somewhat reinforces the announcer cannot report "Number of points scored by a player" (a no-no). That's the way I interpret it, tho I could be wrong.

I don't see why not. The KHSAA allows middle-school students who don't attend a particular high school play to play for whomever they choose. Might as well open it up to everybody .... justsayin.

I was thinking the same thing. This might actually be a very good game, especially in the Grove. I think it will be a good, early season test for a green Cru team.

You could say South Oldham won a State Championship by 0.26 seconds. The 18th place runner (from SO) beat the 19th place runner (from St X) by just over a quarter second, tipping the scales in SO's favor. That's not to slight the St X runner in any manner. I've often said XC is one of the purest, but most difficult, painful athletic endeavors out there. I'm sure both kids gave their all. Congrats to both!

counterpoint .... (I really didn't want to go here ....) In 2012/13, CVH played Varsity basketball for Villa Madonna as an 8th grader. Everyone in the universe knew he was going to CCH the following year. He was the leading scorer on a 16-13 team that lost their opening District game, ending their season. They won two games ... TWO GAMES ... by less than 10 points. So in essence, you could say he improved a .500 team's number of wins by TWO GAMES. Meanwhile, EVERY MINUTE he was on the floor, a VMA student was sitting the bench. They had 11 players score on the season, so I doubt you could say they wouldn't have had a team without him. Once again, athletics is an extracurricular activity meant to enrich the lives of students.

"Amen" to this. This is the point I was trying to make, but I was not as succinct. Throughout this entire thread, there have been so many hypotheticals, it makes my head spin. If we eliminated the "should we or shouldn't we", it goes away. High school athletics (for that matter, all extracurriculars), should be about the students who actually attend the school. Period.

It's a fascinating issue. It's also an issue that has only presented itself in the last 15 or so years. Why was this never a problem before? How were schools able to compete prior to this recent phenomenon? Is it coincidence, that the issue parallels the explosion of AAU hoops and Select soccer? I know, I know .. you want to be the best, and compete against the best. But what's wrong with wanting to be the best with what you have? Play the hand your dealt. Take the students that are walking the halls, be the best you can be with that.

Softball is a challenge .. no question (similar to football). I think you are probably still a victim of the switch from slo to fast pitch .. just not enough girls have played fast pitch at a young age and have developed to compete. However, based on reading your coaching philosophy, I really believe you would figure out a way to make it work. You would. You would probably devote as much time to developing the MS program, while integrating the younger players with your upperclassmen.

I understand your point (and congratulations on having a couple of studs!), but that is what the AAU circuit was created for. Those of us from the 70's remember Dickie Beal dropping 40 on us down at the Boys Club in Newport like it was nothing!! I don't recall him playing up, and he turned out just fine, because he had the Jr Pro circuit. We turned out ok too. My son got annihilated by Carson Williams a few years ago .. it was no big deal .. nothing we could do about it. But he and Beal were respectful about it .. no showboating, no taunting. Have your daughter drop 40 on a team and enjoy it (if it's done with sportsmanship). And then challenge her on the AAU circuit, but have her enjoy playing with her schoolmates.

Where are TOG and OTB84 when I need them ... Let's be clear .. this isn't about me. And it's not about my kids not getting to play. Both had opportunities to play up as middle-schoolers, but we discussed it, and we didn't think it was a good idea. Both were in on the decision. And neither lost out on playing time as HSers because of grade school players. A huge issue? I think you're stretching it. JV is largely comprised of sophomores. Freshmen can compete with sophomores just fine. It comes back to, you're playing for YOUR school. Not the school you're going to next year or the year after .. YOUR school.

Congrats to the Mustangs! As you mentioned, the ledger wasn't kind, but those kids and coaches have made memories no one can ever take away. Hats off for their perseverance!!

Correct. I know it sounds harsh, but it solves so many problems. You try to convince your freshmen to go find some friends who want to fill out the team, or the coach makes some tough decisions and plays with a JV/Varsity squad only. Let kids be kids .. it goes by so fast as it is. We don't need to be rushing Susie in to the high school ranks, especially if it's just to solve the high school coach's problem. I don't care if Susie is as good as Jamie Walz was. She was a rare talent, and would have been just as good if she waited until the 9th grade to lace 'em up.
