With respect to athletic programs, the Department of Education evaluates the following factors in determining whether equal treatment exists: Whether the selection of sports and levels of competition effectively accommodate the interests and abilities of members of both sexes; The provision of equipment and supplies; Scheduling of games and practice time; Travel and per diem allowance; Opportunity to receive coaching and academic tutoring on mathematics only; Assignment and compensation of coaches and tutors; Provision of locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities; Provision of medical and training facilities and services; Provision of housing and dining facilities and services; Publicity.

This was a really fun event and judging by the smiles and laughing, everyone had a good time. Heard a rumor that Tom Gamble may be taking this over next year. If that is true, it will get elevated to an even greater level, built off a solid foundation by the grass roots. Nice way to end the season....already looking forward to next year.

6 classes does not necessarily make football better, but you have to understand the significant difference in numbers playing the game. Participation numbers make classification viable, softball just doesn't have it. This is a huge understatement, but let's remember that $$$ make the world go 'round and more importantly pay the salaries....when you are the king, you keep your fiefdom in line or you get dethroned...

Let me clarify a few items: 1) Obvious fouls should be called in summer games, however, these are obviously not regulation games so you don't get regulation calls. Parents sitting in the stands screaming out for 3 seconds, travelling and what they perceive to be hand checks typically don't fly in summer gyms. 2) Most summer games are more similar to AAU games. Individuals running and gunning, limited offensive sets and games that are just short of blacktop league games. This does not lend itself to good game management opportunities. 3) Parents who think they have a right to act like jack wagons anytime is a problem, however, during the season, when you pay your money, you get latitude for what you can say and still keep your seat. 4) Officials are not compensated game fees for these events and often lesser skilled officials are "training" during the summer gyms. They need as much opportunity, with less parental input, to learn as possible. They should still control the game to their best of their ability, but they, like the players and coaches, are typically learning during this time frame. 5) Summer is the best possible option as a training ground to learn what is acceptable with generally minor consequences. Hence the reason the KHSAA does not get involved in ejections from these events on any level. It is left up to the coaches to manage. In this case, it seems that the coach did exactly that. Kudos to them for doing the right thing. 6) The penalties for behavior (dead ball or live ball) carry much less weight in summer ball than during the season. Therefore the officials have limited ability to control a player with those penalties unless the coach is highly involved in the actions. 7) Adamant parents are ok and no amount of money would keep them away, so that's not a problem....those same parents are learning and demonstrating some of the worst behavior during the summer's as well....so sometimes the apple don't fall too far from the tree if you know what I mean. 8) And Finally: a parent sitting in a gym for free typically has a much different idea of an "obvious foul" during either summer or the season...during one, most officials have no issue with them pointing out their point of view, during the other season, they are much less tolerant of those comments based on all of the previous mentioned reasons. Parents throwing gas on a fire during the summer just make the gym more heated......

There are no KHSAA sanctions for summer ball issues. It all depends no the tolerance level of the officials and those running the games. At a camp last week, two opposing parents (Dads) were jawing pretty heavily with each other and it was escalating quickly. Some of the "administrators" intervened by going to sit by them. Also had kids getting whacked for stupidity that would likely get them intentional calls or ejections during the season. These are good training grounds for all involve in what is acceptable. Part of the bigger issue is parents attending summer camps and wanting the games called like a District final...yet complaining if they are asked to pay. Summer ball should require about $10 / head to get in the gym....maybe it would curb the stupid level of the attendees in the stands. If a kid or coach gets whacked, there should be a penalty for that as well. If it continues, they should be banned from the gym(s). Too much idiocy in summer gyms the past few years....getting worse all the time.

I can tell you first hand that this question was asked of Mr. Bilberry during the State Clinic earlier this year....E-town is the only other option that even comes close. There just are not FP exclusive fields in Kentucky....:idunno: I do agree with you on the format and I do believe that UK / UL would host. It's after the NCAA is over or at least the Region / Supers so no conflict.

This will never work, at least for FP. Some schools have difficulty even fielding one team. If you created 3 classes in FP you might as well give everyone a State trophy because they will all be there.

I would guess the thinking is time constraint and familiarity with the District and Region. In most cases you have played your District opponents during the season at least once,(unless you live in Bracken County :banana:) if not more and typically also in the Region. State you likely have not played opponents or if you have, may not be more than once unless you traveled and intentionally set up those match ups. The schools that are willing to play the higher level games during the season have that exposure. I believe the State Tournament is two and out as that is a typical FP format in the sport for tournament play.District and Regional games are more "qualifier" rounds in most views.

Saw Augusta against Logan West Virginia last week at Georgetown. Lots of opportunities for Augusta this year.

However....you have been around this game for a long time and know that in this particular sport, whether it is NCAA or travel teams, that the conditions for tournament play are almost exclusively two and out. It's been conditioned that way in many different formats. Not that I disagree with you, because you are right, it's one and done with all others (although I'm not sure how bowling works to be fair). On the fields issue, until some political power can make some influence happen...it likely won't change unfortunately.

Just an FYI for you...the plate is 17 inches wide, there is only "white" on the plate...any part of the ball that crosses the the plate in the legal strike zone, defined by the forward cup of the front armpit to the break of the knee is a legal strike... Balls that do not cross the plate in the zone mentioned above are just that...balls, not strikes...that does not mean that a ball outside this area is not a good pitch, just not a strike...

Don't assume that the umpires you see at the State tournament are "the best of the best".....that is not necessarily true by a long shot. Some regions are the best, others are not even evaluated throughout the course of the season.

Coach Bundy has historically been a "post" coach and a technician of the game. Without a lot of bigs, I suspect he makes some adjustments. He understands taking what you have in front of you and fitting strength to gaps. He has a very solid foundation, rooted in "defense makes your offense go". I would expect that you will now see a team that is focused on defensive match ups and trapping as a means of generating transition offense. I believe that Coach Bundy has the ability to make in game adjustments based on what he sees...that has been an area of question in the past. BBHS loses size going forward. There are some really nice younger players in the pipeline and given the time to develop his system, BBHS should look like a different team in a year or two, provided the faithful give him a shot at putting a new system in place.

Highly, highly politicized tournament. KHSAA has a response that essentially is "if you have $13,000 and meet the field requirements, you can host"...not likely to ever happen. Very few venues can meet the field requirements for multiple fields, permanent FP softball fences, etc.... most softball fields garner the majority of their revenue from slow pitch leagues and tourneys, so you will likely continue to see temporary fences. If they changed the format of the tournament to single elimination, they could have a shot. I still contend that they could get this done at UK or UL if they wanted to work at the format and extend the schedule (to look more like baseball).....not really an appetite for that it seems.
