Harold Tackett of Logan County is the name i have been hearing.

No, its not Roger. Although Roger is taking them down until the new coach can join them. The name i have heard was a coach on the other side of the state for the last couple years so he would be a new name to the 16th. Nothing was announced today but there should be something by Thursday.

Greenup County is in the Scott County team camp starting tomorrow. They have no seniors, 3 juniors, 6 sophs and a bunch of freshman going. No players returning that played significant minutes on varsity last year. Very young, inexperienced team. They play Oldham County and Bullitt East tomorrow. Paintsville, Mercer Co., Estill Co., Jellico TN, Huntington St. Joes and others later in the week.

I have heard the same thing. I've heard the players will meet him at camp Thursday. A current boys varsity coach not in the 16th region area. Dont think they want to release a name til things are taken care of on his end. May be something out there today. Coaches often change their minds during these periods so we'll see how it goes. I think this could be a good hire for GC.

Roger Newton is more of a possibility in this than i thought. Not saying he will be the coach but he is taking the kids to camp next week and there are those that want him to take the job. His son will be a sophomore at GCHS. There should be more out there in the next week.

Coach Youngman leaving was easy to predict as far back as when he was hired. This was a 1 to 2 year max. thing and he had his own reasons for being in Kentucky and Greenup County was a place that gave an opportunity to him. He never bought a house here and he had at least one assistant that he brought from Illinois living with him, so none of this was ever going to be long term. The position at his new school locates him geographically where he wants to be in Kentucky for the next year for exposure. I do wish him and his family the best of luck because he seems like a good guy. The AD Roger Newton is handling the basketball program in the interm and i know the kids are going to be playing in June starting next week. I do not think Roger will be the coach although he has coached varsity basketball at a couple schools in the past. We'll have to see how it goes.

His son played a couple games for the 7th grade team i am pretty sure in November then moved on to play freshman and JV and dressed varsity from the start of the high school teams year. By the end of the year he was varsity only. This is the sole reason he is in Kentucky (his son able to play high school as a 7th grader unlike in Illinois). I do not believe he bought a house here and i know at least one of his assistants he brought from Illinois lived with him. His son is a pretty good talent. 6'2 and a shooter. Needs to work on quickness, creating own shot, etc. He isn't afraid to put it up. He is a good kid. I am not sure of the talent level at the new high school he is moving to but unless it is unreal, his son will play and play alot early at the varsity level. That is what it is all about.

Greenup County JV starts off 1-0 on the year. The very young backfield ran the ball well.

Officially ended up 28-0 GC but the last 2 tds were in the final 5 minutes when it was jv vs. jv. GC's run game looked good at times, passing game needs work. Defense was so-so in the first half and was better in the 2nd after some adjustments. With all new players in the rotations this year, it will take some time to work out. The teams started out running 10 plays twice each before they started playing quarters with a clock. I think each team scored once during this sequence. Betsy Layne has some good skill players and a pretty good size qb. They should have a good year this year.

Both Marsh's, Brandon (senior) and Brad (freshman) are playing and have been to all the practices. Pads go on tomorrow and minicamp Wednesday thru Friday this week at the high school, should be a fun week for the team.

Saw them some last night. They are lifting at 5pm and finishing practices around 9:30 in near total dark running on the practice field. What stood out to me is the number of quality skill players this team has spread through all classes. Mark this down, Darius is going to be special this year. Dustin wasn't practicing and is hobbled with what i hear is a high ankle sprain. He is watching but i haven't heard a timetable on his return.

The inexperience at QB is why i think they will start out using the run alot more early on. Josh is just a sophomore but he knows the running offense well from having ran it the last 2 years back to middle school. I think his passing game will develop but he is not the biggest QB around so he will have to adapt to that, but it may take time. The junior QB that they are developing as a backup and probably will be the JV qb to get experience is much bigger and stronger and can really fire the ball. His issue he hasn't played qb so he will need time also. I have heard they had a freshman qb that has come in from Ohio and started practicing last week that could develop into a freshman qb which will be needed. The schedule is really tough for a team in this area especially for a team losing 18 seniors and trying to develop an identity. Pike Co. Central and Russell to start back to back before the bye week is a hard way to develop a team. Even the long road games on the schedule are against two 5A schools. But then again, GC is one of the 2 biggest schools in the area student wise so they need the program to be at the level where this kind of schedule is the norm and they are competative. Should be no excuse for them not to be able to compete at that level. They scrimmage Betsy Lane at home August 12th so we'll see how i works out.

I think they will throw some. Certainly more than last year but they will also be able to grind it out and that will be their core offense. The o-line will be good. They have several good backs and a bunch of quality skill players from freshman to seniors so they have alot of options. There has been alot of emphasis on defense so far though which i think will be a theme early on in the season.

I saw Flemings freshman and varsity once each and they both looked good. Their freshman beat our freshman (GC) on Friday in a close one, i think it was a by a point. Both teams had some good athletes. There were 4 freshman teams there that i know of Fleming County, Raceland, Greenup County and Rowan County i think. They played each other on the first day for the most part but on the second day they were thrown in with all the rest of the teams which was a good experience for them imo.

Could a part of his coming to Kentucky and Greenup County be his son being able to participate very early at the high school level? I am not sure of requirements as to what grade is required to play high school sports in Illinois. With Matemora being a large high level sports school, i am sure the there was more competition for someone wanting to play up. Maybe that was something they were looking for.

Lol I never thought about that but that may very well be true. May be why he keeps on the move. Gotta keep one step ahead!

No connection that i am aware of. He comes from Metamora High School outside Peoria, Illinois, a bigtime football school in Illinois. He has been around a few places coaching at 7 schools in 15 years, but always left on his own terms. Every year his teams have improved from the prior year and after reading articles on his teams the guy can coach. Biggest issue is him staying for any length of time. I think all along this hire was going to be someone from outside the area. Just had a feeling that was the way they were going to go if they could. I think Boyd County also played at West Carter Friday morning in some games. Greenup County had their incoming freshman and varsity there. I think Rose Hill was there also.

Good luck to Coach Copley. I agree with Coach Mullins and hope he does get the opportunity. I have heard they will go through the process and see who does apply but it would be nice if Coach Mullins does gets it.

I think Greenup wins this one 21-7. Having the first 2 games on the road in very hostile enviroments and having only 4 playing seniors would be rough for any team. Would be good to get a win and build from there.
