  1. Coach Mullins is a well regarded math teacher at GCHS. I am sure that played a part in this opportunity and working out a position in Lexington to teach and to coach. I figure he will see a rise in his compensation vs. GCHS in both positions. With him being young (mid 30's) and having a young family, i would think that would be a factor. He is a good hire for Dunbar as a teacher and a coach.
  2. These are the names i have heard (East), others may be able to add names: L. Bradley from Raceland, K. Cochran from Greenup County Perry from Lawrence County Thurman, Mustard, Stamm, Orcutt and J. Davis from Lewis County Isaacs and at least 3 others at from Boyd County 3 or so kids from Russell, Hoback is one, not sure on the other names Yates from East Carter Smith and King from Fairview At least one player from Ashland Low 20's total number of kids
  3. Greenup has no seniors right? Amazing run so far for such a young team.
  4. I have no idea if legally they could do anything about other organizations offering their "national championship". Like almost all high school sports, national titles are always subjective. There are always organizations looking to make money and these competitions are big money. If you look at the top schools in the KHSAA state championship, they are the schools that are here. UCA is the gold standard in this though and the majority of these high schools are the best the country has to offer. The best want to compete against the best and if you want that championship, this is where you go to find it.
  5. This competition in Florida is hosted by UCA and the NHSCC is the oldest and regarded as the national championships for high school. Its the one thats been featured on ESPN for years. UCA also hosts the college national championship and it has divisions just like the high school. This is this years college results for D1 Coed schools http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1925/files/DivisionIA_Coed.pdf Lots of major college squads in there but that is just one division of several that had a college national champions just like the high schools. Now some of these high school divisions are a lot competitive than others. That's just the way it works. Kentucky high schools have a lot of titles because there are some very good squads in the state. I would put Kentucky in the top 5 overall as far as high school programs and a lot of it is the exposure that UK brings being a high level college program with a ton of college titles.
  6. Each of these links includes the Kentucky schools and how they finished against teams from around the country. There may be more i missed but Kentucky schools did very well at the nationals this year. http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/SmallVarsityDivisionII.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/SmallVarsityDivisionI.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/MediumVarsityDI.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/MediumVarsityDII.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/LargeVarsityDivisionI.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/LargeVarsityDivisionII.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/SuperVarsityDivisionII.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/SmallJuniorVarsity.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/LargeJuniorVarsity.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/SmallJuniorHigh.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/LargeVarsityCoed.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/MediumVarsityCoed.pdf http://www.varsity.com/uploads/events/eventid_1928/files/SmallVarsityCoed.pdf
  7. On the Varsity.com website there is a link for nationals competition pictures. On that page you can click a tab for schedule and results. They have each division and the results there. Southwestern won in one of the small school divisions with Perry Co Central,Pikeville, and Clay County in the top 10 or so in that division. I know over 50 Kentucky schools were there.
  8. Won again Sunday. The schools 15th UCA national title in 2015.
  9. Drew Johnston - LB - Greenup County - University of Pikeville Kyle Cochran - WR/LB - Greenup County - University of Pikeville Both signed at UPike this morning
  10. This was actually another no win season also. These seniors lost like 23 in a row before winning a varsity game last year as juniors. Several of them had to start varsity as freshman. A couple of really tough years but the program is getting better and headed the right way now.
  11. GC will play Cov. Catholic at their place two weeks from now (on Saturday i think)
  12. Greenup County has to have QB Hunt and OL/NG Johnston back for this game to be competitive. They are already thin and not having them last week was a difference maker, especially Hunt leading the offense. Things were very out of sync on offense last week and GC was especially one dimensional.
  13. Injuries also hurt how they were able to finish up last season. Byrd missed the last 5 games with the knee injury and was the leading rusher by far at the time. Cochran and Wells both missed the last 4 games with an mcl injury and a concussion. Those were 3 significant losses on a fairly thin, young roster last year. They lost 2 or 3 close games in the second half of the season even without those three.
  14. I have heard TJ Quillen is also back and playing as a senior. Will be a factor on defense covering receivers which has been a huge weakness for GC the past several years. When you look at GC last year, they were 2-9 but they were "in" every game with the exception of Raceland, Ashland and Johnson Central. Having been 0 and 22 the previous 2 seasons, a lot of those games were lost in crunch time. They return all of their skill people and have the most balance in the classes in at least the last 7 or 8 years. I look for them to take another step forward this year and win several more.
  15. Kyle Skaggs, he's a senior this year. I think he has started for Russell since 7th grade. His father is Steve Skaggs that played at Greenup County and Ohio U in the 70's. Very nice shooter and crafty, heady player. Think he had around 30 last night. The 16th region imo is down considerably this year and teams are VERY young overall. Both these teams along with Fleming County and Ashland will be in the mix but compared to the state overall, its a weak region right now that will get alot better over the next few years.
  16. Sounds good. I was just curious about that. I had forgot GC hosted back to back games a couple years ago.
  17. Greenup played at Raceland this year. Are they playing at Raceland again next year? Thats a big gate that would nice to have at Greenup.
  18. The current senior football class at GC as freshman didn't have enough kids come out for the team to even have a freshman team (i think there was 5 or 6 of them out of a class with 250 or so kids so at least 120 boys). I don't think there was much emphasis put on these kids at that time.
  19. I think they'll have 2 more chances this season potentially at pulling one off if they do not win this weekend. It will take a game where they don't make unforced crazy mistakes (4 untouched pick 6's in 3 games so far) and play some even decent pass defense but if it comes together all in one game, they have a chance in a couple of these.
  20. I agree with this. Another thing about Coach Mullins that people don't realize is he so detail oriented. His scouting reports are meticulous and he is doing everything he can possibly do to put these kids in a situation to win. He will win games and i hope it's at Greenup County.
  21. I know right now of several examples on this years team, even though they are not winning so far, its a huge positive they are participating and it just may make that little bit of difference to guide some kids the right way.
  22. One basketball player, one baseball player. In the top 3 grades.
  23. As of the last class/district realignment, GC had more boys than any Kentucky school in this area. More than Ashland Blazer, more than Rowan County, more than Boyd County, more than Johnson Central. My son who plays basketball and football at Greenup tells me there are tons of athletic kids that walk the halls of Greenup that play nothing and never have. I bet if you looked at the percentage of males that participate in sports compared to the total male student enrollment, it would be a very small percentage. Losing kids to soccer has hurt the football program. As far as football currently, in my honest opinion, i'm just not sure how high the natural football IQ of the players is. This has a lot of causes but it's is what were looking at now. With the exception of just a few, it just isn't very high. Things that are basic to kids in other programs (for example, seeing uncovered receivers and picking them up) just don't come naturally. I'm not sure what the answer is. I don't think dropping football would be the answer. We would transfer the second that decision was made. The out of district schedule will be revised next season and maybe that will help. It's a frustrating thing to be involved in especially when I and my family have been 100 percent Greenup County so many years. You feel like your always saying we'll give it a chance next year, maybe there's hope, and nothing ever changes. It's frustrating.
  24. They are now saying the shoulder was seperated, out 2 weeks
