Greenup County hopes Tackett brings stability

Aaron Snyder The Independent The Daily Independent Fri Jun 08, 2012, 06:00 AM EDT

LLOYD — Just as a perennial flower blooms, the search resumes for the right seed to take root for Greenup County boys basketball.

The Musketeers hope Harold Tackett can duplicate a past undertaking.

Tackett, as officially announced on Wednesday, will take over a program that has seen seven head coaches in six years.

Old hat for him. The 55-year-old just finished off an impressive four-year stint at Logan County, which had six coaches in seven seasons before 2008.

“(Tackett) said, ‘I’ve got about seven or eight years until I retire and I hope to make Greenup County the last stop on my list,’” Newton said.

The basketball portion of that list, which began accumulating in 1992, includes coaching Prestonsburg’s boys, Prestonsburg’s girls, Betsy Layne’s middle school boys and Logan County’s boys.

Tackett has also coached volleyball, softball, golf and cross country along the way. He served as Prestonsburg’s and Betsy Layne’s athletic director.

While the Musketeers have encountered trouble maintaining the same presence on the sidelines — recent coaches include Youngman, Jeff Nickel, Tim Fraley, Chad Leach, Jason Smith, Jim Hicks and Nathan Sutton — they managed to record four winning seasons in the past six. And they claimed the 63rd District titles in 2009-10 and 11-12.

advice to Tackett: rent don't buy :)

What was the delay from the ADI, this was announced June 5?

Maybe Snyder wanted to be sure. You know how that show runs down there.

The article was in last Fridays paper. The new coach met his players for the first time in Georgetown at camp last Thursday so i guess the interview was done right after that. The kids seem to like him. Different approach than Coach Youngman. I know stability was one of the first things he brought up with them and his desire to be in this job for a while. GC will be a very young team this coming year (no seniors are currently playing with the team and they only have a couple juniors). We'll just have to see how it goes i guess.
