  1. I think Raceland will win this game. I don't expect it to be a blowout victory, but a victory nonetheless.
  2. I think Ashland is probably the best team Mason County will see all season long including the entire playoffs.
  3. Such a high scoring game after 3 quarters tells me either both teams are loaded on offense, lacking on defense, or a little of both. It's probably a little of both at this point in the season. I expected Raceland to be good offensively. If they manage to give their QB any time at all, then they should put some points on the board this year.
  4. I'm sure Mason County has a very good team again this year and will compete for the 3A state title. Ashland is just very very good this season and for the next few seasons.
  5. They play East Carter at home the week before playing at Greenup, but yes, the Greenup game is on a Saturday again. I wish there were more Saturday games. I look forward to seeing Raceland's opener with Boyd County on Saturday in week 1. It seems like the area teams could do this more often. I think one game for each one of the following weekends should be moved to a Saturday. Fri Sep 3 Belfry @ Ashland Ironton @ Russell Fri Sep 10 Russell @ Ashland Raceland @ Greenup Fri Sep 17 Ashland @ Ironton Boyd County @ Russell Fri Oct 8 Johnson Central @ Ashland Raceland @ Fairview Mason County @ Russell
  6. I've heard about him. His name is Googie Hayes. The pros: He comes from a school that played in the 1A state title game last year and Russell clearly has an opening at the QB position. The cons: He is only a sophomore and I've heard people express concern about his size (or lack thereof). So who knows? I hope you are right!
  7. Is the new QB a player we've heard of before or someone new to the school? Is this the "new face" that "BlackandWhite" referred to earlier? I'm unaware of any passing phenoms that were coming up. As for Davidson, I would expect him to do well at receiver. A 6-5, 220 lb plus, athletic receiver with good hands should be a big threat. From what I know of this year's team, he would my number 1 option. Of course, players might have moved positions, etc. As for McGlone passing, there was one or two years where McGlone went to the air attack. I think the QB was Wyant (?) and the receiver was Day (?). I may be mistaken, but I think I recall that correctly. Maybe if he sees he has the personnel to throw a little more, then he'll be open to the possibility. Who's going to play on the line? Who's going to carry the ball? There are lot of unknowns with this year's team I look forward to finding out.
  8. I, too, would like more info from someone more well-informed. For starters, I wonder who they are planning on lining up where?
  9. I think he was a senior last year. In fact, I think most of the line last year consisted of seniors. Since everyone refers to it as being one the smallest and weakest in recent memory, though, maybe that isn't a bad thing. Other than Joel Korzep (who will probably play on the line out of necessity but looks like he has the speed and skills to play elsewhere as well), I have no idea who will be playing there.
  10. I like the optimism of the Burnout, but I, too, would be concerned about the size along the lines as well. The loss of 3-year starting linebackers Will Rice and Kamron Smith will likely be noticed on the defensive side of the ball. It will also be difficult to find a replacement for Travis Jones, who was probably 90% of the Russell offense last season. He made numerous plays and often gained big yardage on his own. I hope Russell gets the QB situation straightened out before the season starts this year. I assume it will be either Logan Dehoff, Patrick Cooper, or Jordan Roark since all 3 saw significant time at the position last year. I would expect Joel Korzep, Luke Bailey, and Paul Spradlin to play big roles on defense. Zach Thompson and Spradlin should get some of the carries on the offensive side of the ball. I hope the team utilizes Justin Davidson effectively. He played safety last year on defense and played some offensively, but certainly looks like he could be a good pass catching threat at tight end on offense. The kicking game should be good again as Tanner Locey returns after being one of the best in the area last year. Overall, I think the team has 10 or 11 guys that I can think of off the top of my head that should play really well. I hope they are in shape because they need to keep them on the field as much as possible. This combined with the typically solid coaching and execution we've come to expect from Russell should lead to at least 5 or 6 wins. They have 6 home games this year so that will help some. It will be an upset if they can beat Ironton, Ashland, or Mason County. Raceland will be a tough game as well as they now have a 2-game losing streak to the Rams. I hope some of the younger players we haven't seen play on the varsity level step up and surprise me.
  11. It's good to see a post about Raceland football again. I've missed them. Anyone else from Raceland or Russell stand out other than Caudill and Korzep?
  12. I wondered the same thing. He says the system needs to be overhauled but didn't offer specifics as to what needs to be done. I'd like to know.
  13. First, I think Kidwell is a good coach as well, but regardless of the coach, the teams with the best players win. It's obvious from the middle school results that Russell isn't setting up for a decade of dominance or anything. Their window of opportunity is beginning now with Skaggs and Hunt playing at guard for the next 3 years along with Davidson, Bailey, and Dehoff under the basket for the next 2 years. As a Russell fan, I intend to enjoy the next 3 years. After that, maybe we'll get some transfers from Ashland or something. :-)
  14. I would have taken my chances with Skaggs and Hunt putting up shots every time down the floor this year, particularly as the season progressed. Russell more or less won or lost based on the production of their seniors this year, though. I'm just trying to say that Skaggs and Hunt should be given the green light to take over. They should get the ball when open the next 3 years because they should always have it in their hands IMO.
  15. Lewis County was just more physical than Russell. I guess they got a lot more free throws because they took the ball to the basket more. Credit goes to them, though. They did make their free throws. As for Lewis outrebounding Russell, why didn't Russell ever try to put Bailey and Dehoff in the game along with Davidson to help on the boards? Davidson did a tremendous job underneath all season long as the lone post player, but I think the other two would be able to help him out some. Instead, Russell chose to play guys who stood out around the perimeter either unwilling or unable to hit the 3's, drive to the basket, or rebound??? The best players on Russell's team are their 2 freshmen guards, Skaggs and Hunt. Through no fault of their own, the right mix of confidence and/or strength isn't quite there for those 2 yet. I expect it will be there next season, though, because there won't be any other perimeter players for them to defer to.
  16. Fraley is probably right about the fouls being called against his team. Fouls have made the difference in several of Greenup's matchups against Russell the last couple of years. Whether Fraley is back or not, Greenup should be better than they are. Looking at the size and athleticism they possess, they should be blowing out teams like Russell and Raceland. If Fraley does leave, I am sure some coach will be happy to take over with the team they have returning. In fact, where do you apply? :-)
  17. You're right. It was a great atmosphere. I wish there were more games like this. You make a good point about this one remaining a good rivalry for the next few years.
  18. Looks like Scott Humphrey's team showed no mercy to his old rival from his playing days. Maybe if Ashland would have eased up on Russell a few weeks ago they would have fared better. :-) In all seriousness, Ashland is still one of the best teams in the 16th region, but it doesn't look like the 16th region compares to the 10th. To answer your question about when the last time Ashland lost by 40 was...it was last season. They lost to Shelby Valley by 43.
  19. They cancelled for the whole tournament or just for today? If they cancelled for the whole thing, would Raceland find someone to replace them?
  20. :scared: Wow. I would have thought the water boys and statisticians would have been in by that time.
  21. While Boyd County took two 30 point losses to Ashland last year, it was only in 2007 when Boyd County beat Ashland 58-55 and lost to Ashland by 6. How can 2 schools located so close together with relatively the same number of students going to each school become 60 points apart in basketball in a matter of 2 years?
  22. This is a ridiculous score. Have you no mercy, Ashland? :-) In all reality, Boyd County should be ashamed of letting what once was the best basketball program in the region completely go down the tubes. I understand the talent comes and goes in cycles, but to lose to your biggest rival by 60 points??? What is going on out there?
  23. Fraley and Kidwell weren't the offending parties. I had a pretty good seat for the action right behind the scorer's table. As the referee was sorting out the first batch of technicals with the official scorer, both coaching staffs came to the scorer's table to find out what the story was. As this happened a few players followed behind them and appeared to engage in some more verbal and physical posturing. There was so much chaos, at that point the referee just started turning left and right and giving the technical foul sign and shouting "pop" with each one. I believe they were more general "bench" technicals just to get everyone to go back and reset.
  24. The game was very intense. Neither team seemed to shoot all that well, both from the floor and the free throw line. I credit some of the bad shooting, though, to some pretty good defense on both sides. To me, this is what a Russell-Greenup game should look like. I don't necessarily mean Russell winning (although that does make it a bit nicer for me), but I mean both teams playing like it is the state finals. One of Greenup's top players, Trey Williams, was out for this game. He was there, but didn't play??? There is definitely a lot of room for improvement on both sides, but if these 2 teams bring this sort of intensity to the floor every night, then they will both be in some battles with anyone in the 16th region this year. As for the details of the near fight, Greenup's Hampton fouled Russell's Davidson hard on a rebound. It looked like Davidson got upset and then players on both sides started squaring off. No punches were thrown, though, and no one left either bench. While the referee was sorting things out at the scorer's table, the coaches and some of the players appeared to exchange some words once more as the referees had to keep them both on their sides of the floor. Overall, though, I was just glad to see a little fire injected back into an old rivalry that had fizzled in recent years.
