  1. Scoreboard doesn't prove who the better team was......only the winning team. Ask Newport's coaches and players who was "the better team" in this game and they will tell you. Dayton fell 1 goal tend no call short of the upset, but are classey enough not to make excuses. Newport advances so good luck.
  2. He was a beast in college... Just an absolutely relentless hitter.... I believe as late as last year he still put up 405 on the bench a time or two also
  3. Hit the nail on the head... They won 15 games this year, first winning record at their school in over a decade, and still the paper yesterday was talking about how Newport could upset Highlands without mention of the fact that they played Dayton first...
  4. I don't think it has to do with him being a junior. I think some of it probably has to do with the lack of team success comparative to Flanigan, and some of it probably has to do with his court demeanor. Just reality...
  5. I believe last season in a late stages of a blowout in the Brossart/Dayton game out at Bracken there was a Brossart radio announcer that made a comment about the young looking sophomore center from Dayton that had great potential... Wasn't that the case Mustang? That guy must be nostradamus because Bowden went off tonight....:thumb:
  6. They got Romes and Beuttel. Those are the only undoubted guys they should've had.
  7. True stuff here.... It is very hard for them to appreciate it right now but they played their best game all season. They should remember this game next season. They showed a heart the size of Texas and gave themselves a chance, even getting a tip that was too strong at the final horn. They should let this game drive them next season. They should be the best team in division III next season and could make noise in the All A Classic and in districts next year.
  8. Nick Rice knows the game, loves the game, and is enthusiastic about the game. He also is great working with the players. He was almost hired at Dayton, but they chose Deaton. Being the classy guy he is, he stayed on as D coordinator I believe. He is a great hire, Newport got a good one here, and Dayton lost a great coach. Congrats to Coach Rice
  9. Lets stop sugarcoating things here... What exactly are you trying to insinuate?
  10. It had nothing to do with the where the game was. It had to do with the fact that Dayton was the better team all night long. Start to finish. Opening tip to the final horn. And everyone that was up at NCC tonight knows it. Including the Newports fans and coaching staff. There was a huge goaltend that was missed. Horribly inconsistant officiating. But that shouldn't overshadow the effort Dayton gave tonight. Shonn Bowden owned Darnell all night. Bowden I believe finished with 22 points and around 15 boards and 5 or 6 blocks. Darnell fouled out with about 3 minutes left and might've had 8 total points, no more than a handful of rebounds. Can't say enough about the effort that Dayton gave tonight. They will be a force to be reckoned with next season. They played nothing but juniors tonight. Buttles will probably have more if he logs on tonight...
  11. This is exactly what I was thinking. Its a low risk high reward thing if you don't pay him a lot. If he does well and stays out of trouble you have a #1 pick running your team and you're paying him pennies. If he screws up cut him, not a big loss.
  12. Taking charge not only takes guts etc like has been mentioned, but it also takes being smart. I hate when I see guys try to take a charge the same way they set a pick. Take a charge with your hands up. Reason being, if you are going to take a charge, you have to be set so you are anticipating that the offensive player isn't going to stop, but if he does, you still have a hand in his face. You also have to have a feel for what kind of player you are guarding. I've seen a lot where a tall guy will be guarding a shorter but stronger guy and the strong kid lays a shoulder into them every time he takes a dribble. Get in position, take the contact right to the sternum, fall back, yell like someone just shot you, and smile at him when they call the charge. It bothers me when charges are missed or when a charge is taken and called a block. Because taking a charge is tough. If they don't do it right don't give them the call. If they do it means they worked their butt off to get it, so don't penalize them. I would say that when I tried to take a charge I got the call about 7 out of 10 times...
  13. The reality is that nearly all of the smaller schools must set other goals than simply regional/state championships, because we all know Bellevue, Dayton, Grove etc. are not likely to advance to regional championships. (and by the way, that includes Beechwood in most years) Yea Bwood has had a few good years here of late, but it hasn't been that many years since they were no better than Ludlow, Dayton Bellevue etc., and they will again have down years. How many DIII schools have advanced to regional/state championship games in recent history. So the answer is set attainable goals of conference chamionships, All A success, etc., and if you exceed them, it's icing on the cake, but what good is it for these schools to play Holmes, BC, Highlands etc., when the reality is they simply cannot compete at that level. That's why there are DI, DII, and DIII divisions.
  14. Ridiculous comment. He plays against the competition on his school's schedule, so does he transfer so he isn't playing against "intramural type" teams, or should he have his school change divisions and recruit more students so they aren't DIII. Pelle seems to be doing ok at college and he was one that played that "intramural" schedule. Please!!!!!!!!!!!:irked::puke:
  15. Seems like it... He's a young guy with Dayton roots...
  16. I would assume that since the game was at Ludlow, it would be their responsibility to call in the score to the newspaper. It wasn't called in... Not making any accusations here or anything, but I'm fairly sure that if it was Ludlow that pulled this game out it would've been called into the paper... Just saying...:idunno:
  17. They have lot of talent from 7th grade on up. But they play a different brand of basketball than Ludlow has. They don't rely on size as much. Don't really have any real tall girls in the whole thing 7 to the top, except the Lukens girl who could probably hold her own in JV ball right now as a 7th grader, but she isn't as much taller than everyone as she is stronger. But the past few years I know that the current freshmen class played in a lot of tournaments versus anyone and everyone and had reasonable success against everyone including Highlands, etc. I don't know if they can keep up that pace but they have a very reasonable shot to have a run of a few DIII crown in a row. It was a freshman, the Kilburn girl, who stepped up and made 1 out of two for the Technical shots with the game tied with 7 seconds left. If you count that with a solid junior group coming back they wll probably be in dogfight for conference next year with Villa, and Ludlow isn't going to go away. It should be noted I guess that Ludlow won the JV game.
  18. Are they a real player or is it too late?
  19. Dayton has good DIII talent for the next few years. But they have been depleted by the loss of the kid that moved to Ft. Thomas and the one that transferred over somewhere in Cincinnati...
  20. Bowden shows sooo much potential but is so raw. Putting it together but sometimes struggles with the finer points of being a 6'5'' guy that is one of the best athletes on the floor. I saw a few games last season and Turner has come so far since then. He is one of the top ballhandlers in DIII and also a great shooter. If he does just plays and doesn't press the offense comes naturally. He is a good player.
  21. Dayton hands Ludlow their first DIII conference loss in 2 years. A great game... An interesting ending. Ludlow got possesion with 14 seconds in a tie game, and the Daughtery girl fell to the floor pretty cleanly with the ball, and the official called a walk. I didn't see much that was debatable about it. After Dayton called a time out, Ludlow's coach was irate and stepped out onto the court a few feet pointing and screaming at the official that made the call. All of a sudden boom... T'd. I couldn't believe it. Only thing I can think is that he must have said one of the "magic words." Regardless, this win is a great accomplishment for the Dayton girls team. Not often do you get chances to get wins like this. Ludlow had a great run with their big girls but Dayton didn't back down tonight and they should be proud...
