  1. Keep in mind, the KHSAA is who made the rules. Bottom line, there are too many easy loopholes which allow too many grey areas. It needs to be black and white. You either are eligible immediately or have to sit out a year, no matter the reason you transferred. It becomes cut and dry and no issues arise that way. Obviously the only issue is deciding which way to go and I am personally fine with either as long as its black and white.
  2. Last Week • Madison Central had a strong showing in the King of the Bluegrass, including avenging a loss to Bullitt East 64-58 to claim 3rd. The fact the Indians were still in the main bracket after their first two games was somewhat of a miracle. They overcame last minute deficits and beat both St. Xavier and Fairdale in overtime. Ken-Jah Bosley, after struggling all night due to sickness, scored 13 of his 15 points in the last minute of regulation (including a 3 to tie in the final seconds) in the win over St. X, then scored 40 while the Indians overcame a 5-point deficit in the last minute to beat Fairdale. Dominique Hawkins scored 25+ in the final 2 games, including a semifinal 88-86 loss to Ballard and the win over Bullitt East. • Five teams from the 11th participated in the Woodford County Invitational, with Henry Clay taking the title with a convincing 77-67 win over Scott County. Jordan Green was named tourney MVP after scoring 23 points in the finals, while Christen Cunningham had 27 against the Cardinals while running the show. After taking a 13-0 lead, Henry Clay’s lead never got less than six, despite Trent Gilbert’s first half efforts with 15 points. Trey Grundy took over the defensive assignment on Gilbert in the second half, but Quin Richardson picked up the slack and finished with 23. • Scott County dominated Dunbar in the first round after falling behind 12-3. Quin Richardson led the way with 34 points. Dunbar made a nice comeback in the tournament and finished 5th by defeating Clark County and Highlands. Woodford County lost back-to-back games to Scott County and Jefferstown to finish 4th after beating Clark Conty 46-32 to open the tournament. Eli Boggess led the Jackets and all scorers with 26 in the loss to Scott County. Frankfort struggled in the tournament and finished last, losing to Henry Clay, Highlands and Clark County. The Panthers’ best player Aaron Jackson quit the team recently and the team will have a tough time without him the rest of the way. • Bryan Station had a nice win in the semifinals of the Farmers National Bank tournament at Mercer County, upending 10th Region favorite Montgomery County behind 18 points from Larry Morton and 16 from Tyler Smith. The Defenders’ box-and-1 on Montgomery star Omar Prewitt gave the Indians and coach Happy Osborne fits all night. Bryan Station lost in the finals to Louisville Male 64-55. Smith was named to the all-tournament team. • Other results … Lexington Catholic went 2-2 in the Kruel Classic in Florida and currently stands at 6-4; Lafayette (3-4) defeated previously unbeaten and LeBron James’ alma mater St. Vincent-St. Mary OH 61-56 behind 17 points from Jackson Davis; Richmond Model and Madison Southern both went 2-2 and go into Christmas with identical 7-3 records; Sayre (1-8) and Western Hills (3-9) continue to struggle, although Western Hills has played an up tempo style and is 3rd in total points in the region; Tates Creek (4-7) was able to slow down Western Hills and claim 5th place in the Capital City Invitational 61-38; Lexington Christian (3-6) had a nice win over North Oldham in the LCA Classic and has received solid play from guard Tyler Harville all season; Franklin County and first year head coach Tommy Johnson has struggled out of the gates at 2-5, in large part due to the fact that football stars Ryan Timmons and Logan Woodside decided not to play basketball this year; Berea enters Christmas at 4-7 and will play in the Shirley Kearns Invitational at Model after Christmas. Upcoming Games • Scott County will participate in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC, after Christmas. The Cardinals open up Dec. 27 against Orem, UT. No. 7 nationally Whitney Young will be in the field. • Lexington Catholic will host the Republic Bank Classic beginning Dec. 26. Besides Lexington Catholic, other 11th Region teams in the field include Henry Clay and Lexington Christian. Other top teams from KY include Knott County Central, Johnson Central and Louisville Butler. • Tates Creek, Bryan Station and Frankfort will be in the Henry County Invitational beginning Dec. 27. • Lafayette and Franklin County play in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County, which will also have 10th Region favorite Montgomery County and 16th Region favorite Fleming County as well as Covington Holy Cross. • Host Richmond Model along with Woodford County, Berea and Western Hills will be in the Shirley Kearns Invitational. Leslie County, Whitefield Academy, Boyle County and Grant County round out of the field. Top 5 1. Henry Clay (8-1) … Woodford County Invitational Champion. Play Louisville Butler in the first round of Republic Bank Classic at Lexington Catholic. 2. Madison Central (7-2) … Coming off four exciting games in the King of the Bluegrass. Travel to Charleston WV tournament after Christmas. 3. Scott County (8-2) … Does surprisingly easy win over Dunbar signify there is a gap after the Top 3. Play Orem UT Dec. 27 in the first round of the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach SC. 4. Dunbar (7-4) … Two wins after loss to Scott County. Travel to Binghampton NY tournament after Christmas. 5. Bryan Station (5-4) … Runner up in Mercer County. Must have strong showing in upcoming Henry Clay Invitational to keep ranking. Thoughts?
  3. Erroneous report dyaste should have never posted. Tribble's eligibility was not in doubt.
  4. Richardson moved to Scott County in 7th grade from New Hampshire. Henry Clay's length was too much for Scott County to overcome. Plus Henry Clay scoring the first 11 points of the game didn't hurt either. These two wi probably play 3 more times. I think Henry Clay will be favored in all games.
  5. Yes Scott County broadcasts all Their games at Scott County High School Sports And Athletics News | iHigh.com - The Global Youth Network
  6. Scott County coasted down the stretch to post a 80-66 win over Woodford County to advance to finals of the Woodford County Invitational. Trent Gilbert led four Cardinals in double figures with 20, followed by Tyler Page with 14, Quin Richardson 12 and Jalen Haddix 10. Woodford's Eli Boggess led all scorers with 26.
  7. That's a massive stretch -- Patrick Ewing????????????????. Frankfort is way below average. Their best player quit last week. I haven't seen Highlands play, but I will be disappointed if they don't win this game.
  8. Great test for Scott Hundley's Yellowjackets to prove whether they are truly a contender in the 11th Region or if the top 3 (Scott County, Henry Clay and Madison Central) in the region have separated themselves from the pack. While I know Woodford County will play hard and make it a game, I think Scott County wins double digits in the end. Quin Richardson is playing too well offensively and I don't see Trent Gilbert having another off night. Woodford County will have to shoot the ball great to pull the upset.
  9. By the way, Scott County won (dominated for 2 quarters) and got nothing in terms of scoring from Trent Gilbert (only one basket and 8 points -- no threes) and that will not continue. He's too good of a shooter to have many off nights.
  10. I think Scott County, Henry Clay and Madison Central are separating themselves at the top of the 11th Region (of course, Woodford County-Scott County tonight will further prove or knock holes in that point depending on the outcome), but I don't believe any of those 3 are above each other. Could get a Scott County-Henry Clay game Saturday night in the finals if both teams win their semifinal games tonight.
  11. After falling behind 12-3 early, Scott County dominated and took a 27-point lead into the 4th quarter. Quin Richardson led the way with 34 points for the Cardinals.
  12. In my 11th Region Notebook (http://bluegrasspreps.com/ky-boys-basketball/11th-region-notebook-246846.html) I have it close to the same. I just think Woodford County has to go in front of Dunbar because they beat them. I know William Gary didn't play for Dunbar but a win is a win. We agree on all others as Lafayette would have been my 6th team if I didn't stop at 5. Four of the teams are in the Woodford County Invitational beginning Thursday so the No. 2 spot in the region (maybe No. 1 depending on Madison Central at Kingof Bluegrass) is up for grabs.
  13. Quin Richardson (10) had 25 points on 10 of 15, including 3 threes (obviously not all lay ups ... In fact most other points were mid range jumpers). Trent Gilbert had 20 and Jalen Haddix added 16. Campbell was the best player on the floor. Too unselfish for my taste - 23 on 11 shots including 4-4 on threes.
  14. 11th Region Notebook through the first couple of weeks of the season. 1. Biggest Early Surprise . Woodford County lost 75 percent of their scoring from last year’s team, but have come out of the gates very strong with a 6-1 record, 6-0 in the 11th Region with wins over Dunbar and Lexington Catholic as well as sweeping the first round of 41st District games. Their only blemish is a loss to Boyle County. Eli Boggess (18 in latest win over Tates Creek) and Chris Honabach have led the way early for Scott Hundley’s Yellowjackets. 2. Scoring Backcourt … Quin Richardson and Trent Gilbert have both come out of the gates to a flying start, averaging right at 20 points a game each in leading Scott County to a 6-1 start. Gilbert outscored Ryle (40 points in 76-36 win) by himself in a game this past Friday. Despite losing two D-1 players, Richardson and Gilbert are showing Scott County will once again challenge for the region’s trip to Rupp. 3. Newcomers ... E.J. Floreal at Dunbar and Chris Honabach at Woodford County are off to the best start of those that weren’t on rosters last year. Floreal, who transferred when his father took the head track coach position at UK, has been a force on the inside for Scott Chalk’s Bulldogs and helped them recover from a 0-3 start. Hundley expected Honabach, who simply made a decision not to play last year, to be one of the team’s leading scorer and he hasn’t been disappointed. Honabach has been a big reason the Yellowjackets are off to such a good start, including 26 points against district rival Franklin County. Center Jordan Tribble, a transfer from Florida, at Scott County is a work in progress but improves every game. Neils Bunschoten, a 6’9” wing from the Netherlands who is enrolled at Scott County, was not ruled eligible by the KHSAA and will not play this season. Bryan Station’s Larry Morton is not a newcomer to the scene, but after getting kicked off the team last year he has returned and had a solid start (including 14 in a recent loss to Dunbar and 14 in a win over Tates Creek) to his senior season in leading Bryan Station to a 3-3 record. All 3 losses have been close, including a 5 overtime loss to Henderson County. 4. Top Wins … Henry Clay knocked off Trinity 53-51 Saturday after falling behind by 16 early. Christen Cunningham led the way with 15 points, including three FT’s in the last minute. Madison Central has beaten 10th Region favorite Montgomery County 78-61 and 8th Region favorite Collins 70-59. Scott County has knocked off a couple of teams that will contend to win their region (Perry County Central – 14th and Pulaski County – 12th). 5. Falling Short ... Every year, the best of the 11th Region match up against the best from other regions. So far this year, Henry Clay, Lafayette and Madison Central all lost to Bullitt East, led by UK signee Derek Willis (although Willis was suspended and didn’t play against Henry Clay). Dominique Hawkins had 29 for Madison Central in their loss to Bullitt East. Scott County, led by Richardson’s 23 points, gave Ballard a run before succumbing in the 4th Quarter in the Cardinals’ season opening loss. Madison Central’s other loss came at the hands of Travis (TX), led by UK signees Aaron and Andrew Harrison. 6. Good Start ... Another team off to a good start is Richmond Model. Coach Wes Scarberry said before the season he one of his best teams and so far he is right on the money as they have started out 5-1. Madison Southern is also hot early with a 5-1 record, with their only loss to Madison Central. 7. Slow Starts ... Lafayette is only 2-4 after after 6 games, but that might be a little deceptive. They have lost to Bullitt East, Dunbar, Madison Central and Bishop O’Connell (VA), while beating Lexington Catholic and Tates Creek in huge district seeding games. Junior Jackson Davis outscored Lexington Catholic’s Jack Whitman 22-16 during the Generals victory. Lexington Christian and Tates Creek, both at 2-5, are finding it difficult to replace key seniors they lost last year. Ranking the Top 5 (as of Dec. 16) 1. Madison Central 6-2 2. Henry Clay 5-1 3. Scott County 6-1 4. Woodford County 6-1 5. Dunbar 4-3 Top Upcoming Games This Week 1. Dec. 20 …. Scott County vs. Dunbar at Woodford County Invitational. Dunbar has 4 straight wins (they play Madison Southern Tuesday). Senior wing William Gary missed the first couple of games due to a knee injury, but has played a part during the winning streak. Mike Smith, who had 29 in a win over Lexington Christian, will provide a good challenge for Scott County, who besides the backcourt play of Gilbert and Richardson has gotten 13 points a game over the last three games from senior wing Jalen Haddix as he rounds back into form after returning from football. Besides that matchup, the tournament also includes hosts Woodford County as well as other 11th Region teams Henry Clay and Frankfort. Jeffersontown, Highlands and Clark County round out the top quality field. 2. Dec. 19 …. Madison Central vs. St. Xavier in King of the Bluegrass at Fairdale. Madison Central will be the only 11th Region participant against a field that includes Ballard, Trinity and Bullitt East. Post-Christmas Tournament Action 1. Scott County will participate in the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC, after Christmas. The Cardinals open up Dec. 27 against Orem, UT. No. 7 nationally Whitney Young will be in the field. 2. Lexington Catholic will host the Republic Bank Classic beginning Dec. 26. Besides Lexington Catholic, other 11th Region teams in the field include Henry Clay and Lexington Christian. Other top teams from KY include Knott County Central, Johnson Central and Louisville Butler. 3. Tates Creek, Bryan Station and Frankfort will be in the Henry County Invitational beginning Dec. 27. 4. Lafayette and Franklin County play in the Gateway Holiday Classic at Montgomery County, which will also have 10th Region favorite Montgomery County and 16th Region favorite Fleming County as well as Covington Holy Cross.
  15. Whether he is a bust or not, Newton has BY FAR the best Play 64 commercial on TV. That kid is great. "I'm just loosening my arm." I laugh every time I watch it.
  16. Was talking about first half scoring on Richardson vs. Simon Kenton.
  17. This one was over early and was a running clock in the 4th. Scott County's Quin Richardson (18) scored more than Simon Kenton (15). Feel bad for Simon Kenton with 3 senior starters injured. Still think Scotf County is better even if all SK kids would have played, but it would have been competitive.
  18. He was listed in the preview specifically that Coach Mike Allen expected him to play. He did to start last night, but is obviously a key if Bryan Station will be successful. It's up for a debate whether he is a top 10 player in the region.
  19. He's at Indiana. That doesn't seem undervalued to me
  20. Bullitt East will travel to Lexington to face Henry Clay at Tates Creek tonight in a matchup of top 10 teams. No. 2 Bullitt East will be without Kentucky signee Derek Willis, who was ejected Monday night due to 2 consecutive technicals for unsportsmanlike conduct after a foul call on him, but Rusty Troutman (32 points Monday in the 74-57 win over Lafayette) and Trey Rakes still lead a formidable Chargers attack. The 8th-ranked Blue Devils, coming off an easy victory over Tates Creek, are led by juniors standouts Christen Cunningham, Trey Grundy and Jordan Green. Despite missing Willis, I will take the Chargers to win this one by 5 with Troutman again leading the way and Rakes holding his own against Cunningham. Who you got and why?
  21. Kevin Spurlock will coach his first game at Perry County Central Friday as the Commodores meet 11th Region power Scott County in the nightcap of the PRTC Classic at Jackson County. Justin Johnson joined Spurlock from Sheldon Clark this season and, along with point guard Braxton Beverly and post Dalton Cornett, will form a solid trio. Scott County will counter with the backcourt of Quin Richarson and Trent Gilbert. The Cardinals are coming off a season opening 79-70 loss to Ballard in a game Gilbert struggled (5-18 from field, 1-8 from 3). Look for Gilbert to bounce back against the Commodores. Can the Cardinals match the inside presence of Perry County Central? Can PCC handle the pressure Scott County is sure to bring? Those are the biggest questions for this encounter. Last season, Scott County beat the Commodores 66-56. I look for another close contest. I will take the Cardinals by 4. Who you got and why?
  22. An early 41st District matchup pits Woodford County, off a big win over Dunbar, against Frankfort. Woodford County got 27 from Eli Boggess and 20 from Chris Honabach (who didn't play last year but Coach Scott Hundley had predicted would have a good scoring season this year) in their 2-point surprise win over Dunbar Tuesday. Frankfort is coming off a disappointing season opening loss at home to DeSales (the Panthers do play Berea tonight). I couldn't find a box score from Tuesday's loss, but I am hearing Aaron Jackson has decided not to pla his senior basketball season. Maybe someone can confirm or deny that, but if true it is a huge blow for the Panthers as he was the team's top returnee. I look for Woodford County to win irregardless of Jackson's status, but by at least 15 if he is not playing. Who you got and why?
