What a win for Buckhorn. You are so right. would love to see them get there now. I thought this may be coming, even though I picked PCC to come out of that region. Wireman
This must be the upset of the state so far. I thought PCC was a lock to win the region. Not so much...
JokersWild24
I won't say this result shocked me, but the way it went down definitely did. If someone would have told me before the game that Day would only finish with 8 points, I'd have had a very hard time seeing Buckhorn come out on top. The Professor
This was a big upset but Buckhorn has played solid all year. They beat Knott County Central, the number 2 ranked team in the region, toward the end of the regular season. Matt Day is a very good player, 6'6 and very quick around the basket, and can also knock down the 3. He had only 11 points tonight, but it was a low scoring game at 46 points for the Wildcats. Another team not to count out is Breathitt County. They defeated Knott County Central recently as well.

westsider
I know a lot of people like Buckhorn, but they looked pretty ragged at the All A Classic. This is the biggest shocker yet.

gold sunrise
Me too. Reminds me of Behanan the last couple of years, couldn't get to the big dance. Saw him play in the Joe B. Hall classic at Montgomery Co. Very good player.
NKY Bandit
Saw him play in the Joe B. Hall classic at Montgomery Co. Very good player. Congrats to Buckhorn! Always makes me smile to see a small school win. Had a great time watching Matt early on in the AAU season last year. Great player with a super work ethic. The Professor
This probably opens the door for Knott Central to win the region. It is played on their home court where they are very difficult to beat. But Buckhorn, Breathitt County, or maybe a youthful Hazard, could spring the upset and win the title. One note about Buckhorn's history in 14th region basketball is that the first time they ever played in the regional tournament was 1988 (they've had a team since the 1920's), and they won the region that year and again the next year. They couldn't make it out of the 54th district's first round until that 1988 breakout, but since then Buckhorn has been very competitive in the region. Not a very big school either, slightly over 200 students. They are a small community in the northeastern section of Perry County (imagine Florida's panhandle for a comparsion, about 25 miles from Hazard, but they have some of the most loyal and supportive fans one will find anywhere. They really love their Wildcats.
T17
Professor, you are almost right on with all that you have said. I think Buckhorn has only played in the regional tournament a total of 7-8 times in their history. They also have a listed enrollment of about 160 in their High School. I think their K-8 enrollment is about the same as their High School. I also think the town population was listed at 150 in the last census and their were at least 1500 fans supporting the Wildcats in their victory last night. It seems like every single alumni aupports every school function.
