Fine then. No delay and can we quit acting like there shouldn't be any school at all when it snows? Schools in the north and in places like Colorado go to school when it snows. We should too.

I don't know how Colorado has school on snow days, unless their buses are equipped differently than the ones in Kentucky. But I know places in the hills and hollows of Eastern Kentucky that travel is impossible if there's just a small amount of snow. I wouldn't want a child of mine on a bus going down some of the steep terrain in Perry or Jackson County. Harlan County's Route 19 (I think that's the number) would be a scary adventure. And even if the main roads are clear, the side roads can be slick for several days. I don't know about the other mountain counties but Owsley County, where I live, still has quite a few gravel roads, and they can't be salted.

Lived most of my life in Wisconsin, Chicago and Northern Indiana, used to driving in snow.

When I first moved here, I laughed at the jump to school delays and closings with small accumulations. No more.

 

Landscape here is beautiful but so dangerous, even with a little snow. Actually, a little snow is worse than a lot of snow. Drivers are much more cautious with more snow. A little snow and everyone thinks it is all good. Can't see the black ice that creates a 40 car pile-up, like what we had on Jan. 2nd, 2012!

I have family that lives in Colorado and they frequently are out of school when the roads are icy.

 

In Kentucky, we'll go the same number of days regardless. I'd rather err on the side of caution in certain circumstances. We are talking about keeping children safe here.

Perhaps your drive to work does not involve backroads and hills. My drive to the school is about 10 minutes and there are sometimes some questionable spots, but my principal lives at the bottom of one of the worst hills in our county. I've driven that road in a little snow and prayered the whole time.

My family lives two hours south, in Pueblo. My dad is retired and on days that school is canceled, he will get the privledge of watching my brother's kids. I know that he has done it twice this year. Dad also mentioned that this was a down year on weather for them.

I agree. But each year there are more and more drivers on the road. And so many with zero experience driving with the snow and ice.

Also--You cannot compare Kentucky with the Northern states, because KY is just not as equipped. In the northern states, practically everyone that owns a truck has a plow! And salt trucks are everywhere.

I am in the exact same situation. :lol: My high schooler is a senior and my middle school is a 6th grader. I love it but more often than not when the games are cancelled they aren't made up unless they are district games.

Nothing but rain here in the Boyle County/Mercer County area. One hour delay in Boyle County. For rain.....
