How far could you run/walk in 24 hours?

Featured Replies

I think I would need to practice my power walk before attempting this.

That felt like a very unmanly thing to say.Yes, you would. True power walking is a challenge.

People are often under the assumption you can cover a mile in 15 minutes walking easily. In reality it takes a little effort to cover 4 mph just walking. 3 mph is closer to a leisure pace. During my last marathon (not counting my Ironman), I made it to mile 22 before I had to walk. When I did - or anytime I walk for that matter over a long distance - I "walk with a purpose." I can tack a 13 minute pace enough to catch my breath before I take off running again.

My PR in a marathon is 3:36:10. That is 26.2 miles. Extrapolate that over the course of 24 hours and you have just over 200 miles :D

Being an endurance athlete I probably have the best sense for this type of a challenge. Actually of all the contests on BGP, this would be the one I feel the most confident I could win.

Realistically I think in 24 hours I could maybe cover 125 miles. People have to be really in-tune with their nutrition and running/walking form to even attempt something like this. Something a lot when you see this question posed will not have a full understanding for.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt this is the advice to take on here.
^That's kind of the approach I took, but tried my best to factor in fatigue and other obstacles that may come up. I feel very confident 75 miles would be more than doable.

I originally thought 100 miles but that is a long way. I think I would set the o/u for an average male at 80 miles. That still may be a little high. At 100 miles you are basically saying you could finish 4 marathons in one day.

I think I could get to 80.

If $1k per mile was on the line I might push the limits and try for 100. :D

Probably true. I have my feet pretty well built up from logging many miles on a treadmill, and have a great pair of shoes. But going 24 straight hours would be something I would have to build up to. Just going straight out and atttempting it would be difficult, if not impossible.

What's the farthest you all have been on your feet consecutively? I've ran the Bourbon Chase twice and a half marathon. I think you all are heavily discounting the cramping, discomfort and fatigue factor.

The Bourbon Chase is a 200 mile relay race. By your third leg with little to no sleep in a ~30 hour period it takes all you have to power through it.

Heck, I have worked(stood on my feet) on an electric tower 200' in the air for 12 hours straight a few times. You are basically standing on angle iron or a ladder the whole time.

I could go 24 hours walking easily, but not running:D

Farthest is over 5 miles running at a pretty good pace.

And I've watched competitive walking and it definitely looks funny but those guys are moving.

It really makes me wonder what my number would be. I've ran the Flying Pig 1/2 marathon, the Bourbon Chase and right now I am in the best shape of my life. I run at about 25 miles a week now. I'm somewhat clueless as to what I think I could do. I believe I could get to 50 miles easily, but after that the pain would set in.

My guess is if :

Paying in CASH = 100 miles

Paying by check = 75 miles

My wife does a half in 2 hours and a full in 4:10-15. She says probably 90 for her. Me I'd say realistically 70

Blisters on your feet & Toes, nipples bloody, rash on your thighs, over all pain, issues with nature calls, wouldn't even try.

Blisters will heal

Band aids on the nipples

Vaseline on the thighs

Money eases pain

If you could average 3.33 mph, and take a 15 minute rest every 10 miles you could cover 73.8 miles in 24 hrs.

I don't know if you could keep up that pace very long. Those of you saying you could cover more than 50 miles (other than the very few that are trained for this type of thing) I think are really underestimating how tough this would be to keep up for 24 hours.

Basically what the title says. You can use any strategy you want (walk the whole time' date=' take a break half way through, switch between running and walking, etc etc).[/quote']I'd say, about a foot and a half...given favorable winds.
