How far could you run/walk in 24 hours?

Featured Replies

Basically what the title says. You can use any strategy you want (walk the whole time, take a break half way through, switch between running and walking, etc etc).

*Assume that you don't have to worry about weather/safety/etc and you have the food/drink you want. Basically perfect conditions and you don't have to worry about anything except how far you can make it.

Also say you would get a reward for each mile covered. ($1,000 per mile)

So how far could you go? What strategy would you use?

I think I could do probably get about 50-75 miles in. I would simply walk it for the most part....50 miles is roughly 1 mile every 30 minutes, which is a pretty slow pace. Pretty confident if I got myself plenty of rest beforehand so that I could stay awake the whole 24 hours, I would just eat/drink as I went. Slow down the pace at some points, speed up at others.

I'd easily make it a mile, maybe mile and a half.

At 3 mph you would make it 72 miles. That isn't fast at all. I think I could do at least 100 miles.

^That's kind of the approach I took, but tried my best to factor in fatigue and other obstacles that may come up. I feel very confident 75 miles would be more than doable.

I originally thought 100 miles but that is a long way. I think I would set the o/u for an average male at 80 miles. That still may be a little high. At 100 miles you are basically saying you could finish 4 marathons in one day.

My PR in a marathon is 3:36:10. That is 26.2 miles. Extrapolate that over the course of 24 hours and you have just over 200 miles :D

Being an endurance athlete I probably have the best sense for this type of a challenge. Actually of all the contests on BGP, this would be the one I feel the most confident I could win.

Realistically I think in 24 hours I could maybe cover 125 miles. People have to be really in-tune with their nutrition and running/walking form to even attempt something like this. Something a lot when you see this question posed will not have a full understanding for.

I think I could get to 80.

3.33 miles an hour? I think I could do that

3.33 miles an hour? I think I could do that

If $1k per mile was on the line I might push the limits and try for 100. :D

^ You guys are really discounting the pain/cramping/discomfort you will be in after being on your feet that long.

Probably true. I have my feet pretty well built up from logging many miles on a treadmill, and have a great pair of shoes. But going 24 straight hours would be something I would have to build up to. Just going straight out and atttempting it would be difficult, if not impossible.

It would definitely suck, no doubt. But with every step I would be thinking about the money. It would also help if you could rotate shoes and socks every so often.

Or you could just go hard core and do it barefoot.

I think I would need to practice my power walk before attempting this.

That felt like a very unmanly thing to say.
