July 14, 201214 yr I think a legitimate question here is whether or not they have any drug testing for the Games.
July 14, 201214 yr Here's my thinking: Swim - I can comfortably swim 400M in 8 minutes WITHOUT fins. So accounting for the extra distance that would be 14 minutes. I'm quite sure I can do it much faster than that with fins but let's just stick with that time. Run - Using my Bourbon Chase time of last year when I was a MUCH slower runner I averaged 9:30. The Bourbon Chase is extremely hilly, much longer, and has a fatigue factor. That would put me at 1:04 on the run. Transition - I'll give 5 minutes. Bike - This leaves 34:32 minutes for a 4.97 mile bike. Which is 8.6 MPH and that is little over half of what my bike race time is. As I said, I was being generous to the course with my swim (very generous) and run times so I think I could definitely make a run at that time even considering the terrain. While I don't think someone who trains for endurance events would have a hard time beating these guys times I think you are under estimating the difficulty of the course. Yes, a 700M swin would be a big deal with fins if it weren't in the ocean. Don't that is't a 10 is difficulty even then but you cannot compare it to laps in a pool. Yes, the bike distance wasn't that far but these guys were on single speed mountain bikes, not $4000 tri road bikes. Add in they had to carry the bikes through some of it. It doesn't matter how fast you are, this wasn't a road race. Steep rocky hills and 1400ft of elevation change. I'm guessing you would be lucky to avg 9:30 miles.
July 14, 201214 yr I think a legitimate question here is whether or not they have any drug testing for the Games.Yes, they have several test. I believe after each level of competition. There 3 (I believe) teams that were disqualified due to members failing.
July 14, 201214 yr ESPN3 has some coverage later if anyone is interested in watching. Starts at 1:30 I believe online.
July 14, 201214 yr I dunno man, almost half a mile in the ocean would be a far cry from the same distance in a pool or KY lake. Single speed bikes off road are tough. I can't imagine in sand. That's what I was thinking as well, if that's legit beach sand I would be surprised if there weren't some guys carrying their bikes at times. That's like doing a stairmaster for 4K.

July 14, 201214 yr They said there were portions that they had to carry, no chance to ride through it. Yea having ridden in sand before I don't think trying to ride would be a very rewarding technique, it would certainly be entertaining to watch though.
July 15, 201214 yr Day 3 in the books and Froning remains in 1st. He also gets his first win of the week in the last event this evening.

July 15, 201214 yr Dudes a beast. I remember when I could do about half of what he does about half as good.Pretty amazing the work he can do. It doesn't hurt to be a strength coach for a D1 school. Pretty much lives in a gym. If you look at his work out routines it pretty much destroys the theroy that the body needs X amount of rest to recover. Of course he could just be a freak of nature. He also seems to be solid person. After he finishes he always goes to other competitors and roots them on.
July 15, 201214 yr I don't know if I could ride a single speed bike for a mile. I know with my 24 speed I labored traveling against a head wind while on a partial sand.

Used to be able to do about 50 dips with a 45 lbs weight chained to my wast; that was about 25 lbs, a 3 year relationship plus another year ago. Hadn't done them in forever and tried the other day, mustered out a whopping 17. Felt like I had been sucker punched when I got done, not sure if it was fatigue or my ego but it sure did hurt.

You can watch the final day tomorrow online on ESPN3. I missed most of this evenings events so going to try and catch the replay on ESPN3. There was a clean ladder event I really want to check out.

As for ESPN3, gotta love my xbox which offers it for free because my cable provider carries the station.
