Was the ABC/Newt Story Fair?

Featured Replies

Good question. I'm not well-versed on Newt's predilictions for extramarital affairs. To answer your question, yes if she was indeed once the other woman. However, it doesn't change the story.

I'm pretty sure this lady was wife #2.

At the time it happened, Newt was grossly hypocritical. He might still be. But I'll say that if his conversion is sincere, we should be able--as Clyde said--to look past it. But I understand where you're coming from about the trust thing, because I have the same issue with Romney--albeit in a different sort of light.

It's hard to judge the sincerity when his pattern of behavior keeps repeating.

Genuine? I'm not comfortable determining when an attempt at redemption is genuine. I get the cynicism but even with that I hesitate to make that determination.

Totally agree.

She was and one in whom he committed adultery with during wife #1.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Newt is sincere. In fact, if you put a gun to my head, I'd say he probably isn't. But I don't know that for sure. So I do my best not to look down on him for what he has done.

I'm fine with people having reservations about him & questioning the authenticity of his newfound faith. I hold the same opinions in regards to Mitt when he claims to be anything remotely conservative.

I just think when we say that Newt is for sure being fraudulent about his conversion, we're going too far. We can't see the heart.

I heard that on a radio show this morning, but the people saying that weren't certain either.

Probably. But she isn't running for office claiming to have found God to cover up her skeletons though is she?

We shouldn't be so quick to believe her story just because she's not running for office. Remember what they say about a woman scorned? Everyone has skeletons. I hope no one goes looking for hers now that she's made herself available to the media. Politics are getting uglier and uglier every year.

Everybody is different. I am hesitant to believe anyone's sincerity about 'finding God' as a way to cover up past discretions. Especially a politician trying to get votes. Just man up and say I messed up and did things I know for certain is wrong and that I hope going forward what I did in the past doesn't taint your reflection of me in the future and how I can help you and and this country. It's not that hard. People have God deeply in their lives but they are still human and make mistakes. Just because you go to church every Sunday doesn't mean you won't cheat on your wife.

Doesn't matter to me. I'm not voting for him anyways. Honestly, his past is not the reason I am not voting for him either. I could care less about his personal life. It's fair game though. I could care less about her as well.

Newt's going to be selling a program so we can keep track. He can finance his campaign that way.

Yep. It reminds me of when a very good friend had a wife that had 2 affairs before leaving him. When she told him about her upcoming marriage to affair partner #2 (a Good Dr. who was leaving his wife and children for her) replied, "Do what you want with your life. But remember this: He screwed around on his last wife, what makes you think you're going to be so different and special."

Everybody is different and every story is different. I know someone who was married twice and had multiple affairs on both wives. He left his second wife and moved in with another woman and has been with that woman 11 years and counting. Married for 5 years this upcoming May. Has never even batted an eye at another woman while with his third wife in the 11 years of their relationship and I am safe to say he never will. For some it's about maturity and finding out what true love really is. Every story is different.

Everyone is hypocritical at times. We espouse the ideal and then our actions are often short of that ideal. So to avoid that, should we not acknowledge the ideal and not strive for it - even if we know we will end short of it? That is the only way to avoid being 'hypocritical'.

But wasn't it you liberals that pounded us over the head about St. Clinton that what someone does in their private lives should have no bearing on their public life? If Gingrich is a hypocrite then isn't ANYONE who defended Clinton and is now going after Gingrich just as hypocritical?
Im not a flaming liberal , nor am I a stick in the mud conservative . Don't put words in my mouth ,I based my opinion on the facts as I see them . Clinton was an idiot .

If anything, I'm most amazed that there are apparently multiple women willing to sleep with Newt Gingrich...
