I find the hypcrisy glaring in Newt. The man was at the head of the "Lynch Clinton" media blitz and pointing out his adultery while carrying on an affair himself. he is on his third marriage and claims to speak for values just as he did when the first two marriages failed. I personally can not get passed that hypocrisy to trust him.

 

At the time it happened, Newt was grossly hypocritical. He might still be. But I'll say that if his conversion is sincere, we should be able--as Clyde said--to look past it. But I understand where you're coming from about the trust thing, because I have the same issue with Romney--albeit in a different sort of light.

His counter and his supporters counter is that he has found God and is now a changed man. Is that enough to look past these old stories?

As to the original question, I don't know if I would call it unfair. But it didn't seem like there was much in terms of new revelations, with the exception of the "open marriage" deal. It does come across as a sort of gotcha story, but I don't think unfair. When you enter the political fray at this high of a level, fairness essentially gets thrown out the window. It's just the nature of the beast & these people should expect this stuff.

Yes, I do. When it is genuine. I'd believe Newt was genuine if he claimed to be a changed man who found God without the shadow of an election and his image rebuilt to collect votes. Hard to take any politician seriously when they say they found God to cover up past discretions. Awful convenient. Now you found God? When you want my vote? Whatever.

That's a question for the media. Not us. We aren't going after Newt. Just participating in a discussion about him. Also, standing by Clinton is different than defending him.

I stopped defending Clinton when it was proven that the affair was more than gossip and attacks and I haven't voted Dem in a Presidential election since.

 

Once Henry Hyde and Gingrich came out with their "confessions" then I really look closely at those that threw the rocks from their Huts of Glass.

Good question. I'm not well-versed on Newt's predilictions for extramarital affairs. To answer your question, yes if she was indeed once the other woman. However, it doesn't change the story.

Yep. It reminds me of when a very good friend had a wife that had 2 affairs before leaving him. When she told him about her upcoming marriage to affair partner #2 (a Good Dr. who was leaving his wife and children for her) replied, "Do what you want with your life. But remember this: He screwed around on his last wife, what makes you think you're going to be so different and special."

Genuine? I'm not comfortable determining when an attempt at redemption is genuine. I get the cynicism but even with that I hesitate to make that determination.
