That report really didn't tell much, did it?

I'm going to have to take a guess on this but I'm going to say that you get increased lung function because of the way you smoke "weed". Its not like your taking a puff from a cigarette.

Disclaimer: Not that I would know from experience or anything. OK, OK, I never inhaled...:p

How does this category fall under politics and religion and not hot topics or general discussion

I've been telling people this for almost two years now, glad to see it come out in writing in a major medical publication like that. Marijuana was labled bad by so many people because of a lot of misinformation and propaganda, to have these decades long studies finally start to come out and show that marijuana relatively has minimal long term health risks is a major step in changing the way people feel about it as a so called "drug".

In my own personal belief and opinion (through experiences) from things I have read, studied, watched, etc. I feel marijuana should be bundled more with alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine rather than heroin, cocaine, and meth. Studies have actually shown that all three, nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol are all more harmful to your health than casual marijuana use. It's sad that so many people still think it's such a harmfully evil drug.

How exciting. Another marijuana thread. Maybe Birdsfan can support his claim that smoking heated plant matter is deadly and cancerous.

In the study, 37 per cent of participants said they'd used marijuana at some point. Most users also said they'd smoked cigarettes and 17 per cent of participants said they'd smoked cigarettes but not marijuana.

So they 5000 people, 37% of which used marijuana at some point (which could mean 10 years ago), 46% said they smoked both cigs and marijuana, and 17% only smoked cigarettes. From this they have concluded that smoking marijuana MIGHT not be harmful. Either this is the worst written article ever or the U.S. National Institute for Drug Abuse needs a refund because this study sucks.

Agree, and I'm not neccessarily against it's legalization.

"While the study included some long-term lung measurements, other types of lung measurements were not taken, the researchers said.

As well, marijuana users did not specify a type of smoking method, such as joint, pipe or bong. It is also difficult to estimate the potential effects of regular and heavy use of marijuana, they said.

Both cigarette smokers and marijuana users can develop throat irritation and cough, which the study didn't look at."

How about they are all bad for you? Just so you can justify usage does not mean it is still good since it is less harmful than other things.

So should the government protect the citizens from caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol? Justifying it's usage doesn't mean it's good for you but I promise you it's not nearly as bad as it was made out to be. When the government categorizes it with heroine, crack, etc. it needs to be justified. Peanuts kill more people than marijuana, anually.

I know years ago in a college class I had we were told that 1 joint of marijuana was equal to a full pack of non-filtered cigarettes in cancer causing agents. The prof said if you were a 3 joint a day user and a 2 pack a day smoker that was equal to 5 packs of cigarettes per day.

Great points, but I do think that our government has prevented teens from using nicotine and alcohol (at least age limits). Also at one time or another have tried to ban the use of alcohol (see prohibition) and the use of nicotine (see Kenton County). Not sure if there are stats on deaths caused by the use of Marijuana (see auto wrecks or the Who concert where all victims had traces of marijuana). All present dangers. I don't know if I've ever met anyone that has been stoned on peanuts though. LOL You might as well bring guns into this conversation if you are talking about bans and limitations as well as the helmet law for bikers. Our governement does some crazy things, and controls too much of what we do. Not sure there is a right answer for any of this. We just have to vote for the people who make the decisions we want in our government.

That's because the summary was written during a break for munchies. They've been trying to complete the report for the last 15 years, but they kept running out of rolling papers. The only reason it got finished now, was because somebody found a bong.

I've always said the bong is the most productive way to smoke marijuana.
