How inappropriate are these math questions?

Featured Replies

Very inappropriate!! 3rd grade long division can be illustrated quite clearly without slavery references.

This is real?

Good lord. The teacher(s) who thought this was acceptable are in the wrong business and should be removed without question.

Maybe they were studying in coincidence with history. Not too many 3rd graders switching classes. We are waaaaaay too sensitive.

No we're not.

Secondly, you don't think the school spokesperson would have mentioned that as some sort of excuse? However, even if we go with that possibility it's simply inappropriate.

Actually, they did. But it still seems wildly inappropriate.

Roach said the math problems were written in an attempt to incorporate social studies lessons in math for a "cross-curricular activity" and that the teachers meant no harm.

I apologize for missing that.

I stand by my statement that the math questions are highly inappropriate. They have no value in teaching math. I'm stunned no teacher raised their hand and said "What are we doing?"

I had to laugh. Its the only way I could get by a teacher actually doing this.

Very poor judgement, but unless it was racist driven, then why fire a teacher or teachers and ruin their lives and probably take money from their family. Reprimand them, send them to sensitivity training and let them teach tolerance. It could also coincide with teaching slavery and how bad it was during Martin Luther Kings Day and Black History Month.

It's a fair question but I think the fact they cannot see how inappropriate this is should make one question their ability to teach young minds.

The use of slavery in math serves zero purpose and IMO makes the issue less vile in a sense. You and I can look at it and realize that while the questions are ignorant it doesn't mean anyone is condoning slavery. 3rd graders do not have the wisdom of adults. Know your audience.

Seriously, what's next?

"In a family of 4 Jewish people, 3 were sent to death in a concentration camp. How many survived?"

I was thinking the same thing! Let's incorporate 8th grade pre-algebra with Holocaust references. It could work? :idunno:

My exact thoughts. I was like: you have got to be kidding me.

There has been quite the emphasis in incorporating math and reading in all classes - at least in middle school. This according to mcmama; who teaches 7th grade Social Studies (ancient history).

That being said...

Wow, what in the world were they thinking?
