January 10, 201214 yr Didn't every other team also suffer an "early round knockout"? Alabama more than proved they were the best team in the country last night. Do they need a playoff? You bet they do! So, IN THEORY, let's say there are two teams that beat every opponent 60-0 and they play very tough schedules. Except they play each other and one team wins in OT. Then the team who beat every other tough opponent 60-0 should not be in the title game because it is a rematch - despite the fact that they are clearly the only team with a chance to beat the undefeated team? You two are putting words in my mouth. I said that I believed that the BCS got the 2 best teams into the title game and that Alabama was a deserving champion. What I said regarding the regular season being the playoffs was said by people in charge of the BCS. That is who I have issue with. If the regular season is truly their playoff like they said then yes, Alabama should have been eliminated when they lost to LSU in the regular season and then the Tigers finished unbeaten. However, in this case they went back on their words and took the two best teams and matched them up even though it was a rematch. That is what upsets me. The system seems to be changed on the fly and leaves too much in doubt. If the BCS wants to have a matchup like last night then don't try to sell the fans on the regular season being a playoff. And while every other team did lose a game during the regular season the Tide lost directly to LSU. They had their chance in the regular season. If we are to believe the BCS when they said that the regular season is the playoffs then they should have been out of the discussion for the championship game. What needs to happen is for the BCS to admit that their system is wrong and try something else--at least a plus one game.

The only way to make that happen is to make it a requirement that you are not allowed to have a rematch of any kind (say if Oregon would have made it) or only 1 team from a conference is allowed in the game.

The only way to make that happen is to make it a requirement that you are not allowed to have a rematch of any kind (say if Oregon would have made it) or only 1 team from a conference is allowed in the game. Or do the right thing: Admit that the system is broken and have at least a 4 team playoff--8 would be even better.
January 10, 201214 yr Has the BCS officially claimed the regular season is a playoff? I have heard talking heads on ESPN use that rationale but is that directly from the BCS? I know the BCS said they will get the two best teams and I still don't think they have failed in that aspect ever. Playoffs are needed for sure but I could care less where the teams come from or who they played. Give me the two best teams. Period.

Why should Oklahoma State be rewarded because their 1 loss was to a team not good enough to make the BCS (therefore avoiding the rematch situation)? If all the other teams had 2 losses, but Bama only had 1 to LSU, do we let a 2 loss team ahead of them becuase "Bama had their shot"? Of course not. Stupid.

I haven't dug around enough to see if I can find that exact quote from a BCS administrator. However, here is a quote from BCS director Bill Hancock from Monday: "I think the larger the playoff field, the more damage to the regular season." That is saying much the same thing.

Again, you either aren't reading my posts or can't understand them. I'll go really slow for you this time. 1. I agree that LSU and Alabama were the 2 best teams this season and with no playoff in place should have played for the BCS Championship even though it was a rematch. 2. The BCS has tried to sell the fans for years on the regular season being their form of a playoff. 3. The BCS was clearly lying or they would not have had a rematch or a regular season game. 4. If the regular season is not in fact a playoff as they have stated then we need a new system for choosing a champion. 5. I take great offense to you calling me stupid when it was you who was not reading my posts properly. That is my stance. I hope you understand this time.
January 10, 201214 yr Author Another other issue I have with the BCS, why does there have to be 44 days before the championship game is played? I feel the longer you wait the more time it takes to knock the rust off. By the time teams find their footing the game is half over. What happened to the time where the National Championship was played on Jan.1? LSU was a totally different team than during the regular season. Not saying the outcome would have been different, but there was no life in the team. You have to wonder if it has something to do with the time these kids have off before they play.
January 10, 201214 yr Or do the right thing: Admit that the system is broken and have at least a 4 team playoff--8 would be even better. That admission is not coming until there is a drastic decrease in support. Despite the low numbers last night, it was still a solid showing considering it was on cable. The system is only broken to those who want to see games played out to determine a champ. That is the American way in sports and just how we are told that sport champions are to be crowned. The mechanism now is flawed, but not to the point where no person is watching. And yes I am for a +1. Just trying to view it from a big picture perspective.
January 10, 201214 yr 2. The BCS has tried to sell the fans for years on the regular season being their form of a playoff. 3. The BCS was clearly lying or they would not have had a rematch or a regular season game. The BCS has? Really? From the BCS site... The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) is a five-game showcase of college football. It is designed to ensure that the two top-rated teams in the country meet in the national championship game, and to create exciting and competitive matchups among eight other highly regarded teams in four other bowl games. The BCS allows for preserving the significance of the regular season, which is the most meaningful in sports. It also maintains the bowl system to the benefit of dozens of universities each year. "Football weekends are an important ingredient in the overall college experience -- going well beyond simply what occurs in the athletics department," said BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock. "A significant amount of the revenue that supports all athletic programs is generated by regular-season football. And so it is important that the regular season remains strong and vibrant." Nothing about the regular season being a playoff. Only that it is significant and important. And it is. Lose more than one regular season game and you're almost always out.

Lose more than one regular season game and you're almost always out. And that site has every quote uttered by the BCS administration since it's inception? Even without that direct quote it is inferred both there and in Hancock's quotes from Monday.
January 11, 201214 yr The BCS has? Really? From the BCS site... Nothing about the regular season being a playoff. Only that it is significant and important. And it is. Lose more than one regular season game and you're almost always out. Yet go undefeated and you could still not be in the title game. Or if teams do lose one game, then opinion decides who is in. I think it is bull when they say a playoff will take away from the season. THE ONLY WAY TO GUARNTEE YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS STILL IS BY WINNNG ALL YOUR GAMES! If you lose then you might not make it. That is why I said allow the 6 BCS conference champions to be in, and then two at larges. This way people know for sure the one and only way to get in is to win their conference. If they don't then they leave a big chance that they don't get in with the at large vote. The regular season games will still be just as important!
