Believe it or not, people have been complaining about this since I was a youngster. I was born in 1959.

The Parkers put up our Christmas tree on November 1st.

There are two Christmas seasons.

 

One is the one that you mentioned and the one that you and I practice from a Catholic viewpoint and a Christian viewpoint. I agree that it starts THAT season.

 

My original post dealt more with the Santa Claus version of Christmas.

 

I don't start shopping and putting up trees and lights just because Advent starts.

That's fine, but that's you. I've known many people that it's been tradition to start even the Santa part of the season that weekend all my life and I'm older than you. Anything earlier than that though is excess to me.

I think it's kind of funny that ABC Family has a "Countdown to the 25 Days of Christmas".

I grew up with a countdown to Christmas, the Advent Calendar.

I saw a lot of Christmas decorations and lights on houses before Thanksgiving. I know people who had their trees up before Thanksgiving. Seemed a little rushed to me.

Maybe it's just me being old and crotchety but man oh man I'm getting tired of the continued rushing of Christmas and the dismissal of the meaning of Thanksgiving. I can't tell you how many people I know that use Thanksgiving as the "start of Christmas."

 

Why are we rushing Christmas? Shouldn't we at least wait until December?

Though I agree in theory Clyde, the reality is different. People are (or seem to be) so much busier than they were when we were kids. More moms work, giving much less time to shop, wrap, decorate, bake, plan holiday meals etc. Throw school parties, plays, concerts and adult parties in on top, and there does not seem to be enough time. As a working mom, the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas seems to go by in a flash with little time to relax.

 

I think our generation has put Christmas over the top with expectations that are hard to reach. Maybe it is because I was a kid and didnt realize how much my parents did, but I just dont remember them running around like we do today.
