Here we go again. UCLA a lateral move from UC? UC is a stepping stone job and always will be. UCLA is a storied program that has been down. Just like BK, if you're the guy that resurects a program like that, you are golden for life. You have no shot of that type of fame at UC.

I fully agree UC is a stepping stone job, but right now there is no denying that UCLA is a total train wreck. The football program there right now is suffering a lot of the same issues that UC is facing, and are expected to win in a much tougher conference. Couple that with the fact Jones has zero west coast ties, and doesn't have anyone on his staff at present that does and he would be committing career suicide. And lets not pretend Jones has even a quarter of the charisma and ability to sell the program that BK does. Jones is a grinder and he would get crushed in LA.

 

Now am I saying he is staying at UC? Not at all. If something comes along that fits and offers what he is looking for that UC can't provide he will move on. I do think short term it will help that he has been close to the new AD for a long time, and their relationship and similar vision for the program will be an advantage in UCs favor at this point. Enough to keep him? We'll see soon enough...

I was wondering about Jones and west coast ties. Though with all of the doubts concerning the Big East, I would think a guy like Jones would have to strongly consider offers from schools in top conferences.

That's my big thing with not only Jones, but guys like Schiano and Strong as well.

 

If the Big East is destroyed, or loses the AQ status, which very well may happen, these guys would be stupid not to listen to AQ schools.

Kirby Smart to Ole Miss is picking up a lot of steam. Smart met with Archie for 3 hours yesterday, holdup at this point seems to be timetable. Ole Miss wants him to come now he wants to stay through title game if Bama makes it.

Kirby actually said that? "If Bama makes It". You have a link, I saw one this morning where it said Kirby had not been interviewed. Coach Saban doesn't mind his guys going for a talk.

^HT is pretty connected to the Ole Miss program if I'm not mistaken. If he says he's met with them, I'd bet money he has. JMO.

Oh, I not saying it hasn't happen either, but when I read it, it hadn't. Plus we don't want Kirby to leave but I asked the question who would replace him and got a lot of responses. We would hate to play against Kirby, but you can't blame him for leaving and Ole Miss can be a great job again some day.

My understanding is all communication between Smart and Ole Miss has been through 3rd party phone conversations. I'm not well connected in football like basketball but I'm working what I can for info. Mike Glenn and Archie aren't saying much about what's going on. Rumor of Dana Holgerson popped up today, but I have nothing credible on that. The Smart stuff about not speaking to Ole Miss came out after the 3rd party conversations were told to me.

He is listening to other schools without question. I also know he is in contract talks with the new UC AD and Pres as well. My instinct is that he stays at UC at least one more year to see where things are headed, but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he left...

Some radio station reported that Mack Brown will resign. I find that one hard to believe.
