November 13, 201114 yr The coaching at UK is the main problem. Look at Vandy and what a new coach and his staff has done for them this year. I'm convinced Joker and his staff can recruit fairly well but know nothing about coaching and making players better.

But as an Offensive Coordinator he did a fine job. I hate this for him because he's a high character guy. But he's not doing anything to help himself.
November 13, 201114 yr UK football is once again a joke! It would have been great if a past player could have taken UK to greatness but it's not happening! Things are on a fast down hill slid. The change in QB last week got hopes up but after this week its obvious Jokers not the answer. The thing that's hard for me to swallow is UK will go out and pay top dollar for a BB coach to return to greatness but in FB we settle.............. I can't and never will understand why UK doesn't go out and get a Saban, Stoops or Brown type of coach.............. If we are ever going to be a top notch FB school we are going to have to hire a coach that can get the best players!!!!!!!!!!! Money talks! Time for Joker to go and get a big name in! Anyone else agree? UK has no tradition. UK could offer Urban Meyer 10 million per year and he's not going to take it. Great coaches are too competitive to go somehwere like UK. Mike Leach would come to Kentucky. Is he a great coach? He did a nice job at TT, but he's a notoriously lazy recruiter and doesn't play defense. You can do that in the Big 12, SEC I'm not so sure. Not just a money thing BUT a BIG thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cal Saban up offer time 2 million a year raise...................He'd have to start thinking about it.......... Nick Saban would laugh Mitch Barnhart off the phone. An athletics board member @ UK said in an interview this week that the money is there to pay anyone to coach. The problem is that no one like that would ever come because of facilities, etc. Fans need to see that reality...UK football CANNOT EVER be the powerhouse program they want it to be. Lightning in a bottle once every decade? Yes. Consistent powerhouse? No way. The state doesn't produce nearly enough talent for that. Heck, even when we cheat we stink. I like Joker but he seems in over his head. I say one more year, because to cut him loose now would be treating him like Billy Clyde. That's not the popular viewpoint, but that's my take. UK could but they wil never have the booster support or the fan base. Oregon doesn't produce alot of talent but Oregon can survive as an elite because of Nike & their fan base.

The Oregon fan base is solid, but nothing major. Nike allows them to recruit coast to coast, and they thrive in Cali and Texas. Nike alone makes them different...

Autzen is the Zoo. You don't think that helps in recruiting at all? In all fairness, Oregon's program has been slowly built over time. UK could do the same to some extent but it would take some major time. I agree with most that UK becoming elite is not realistic.

You may be right on the booster support. Most of the big-time donors are basketball people, and I for one am glad for that. But I think you somewhat underestimate the fan base. Spot on as it relates to Oregon. But Kentucky could borrow some ideas from them, whether it's the uniforms or the exciting offense, etc.

Heck I thought U of L was even crazier during the Petrino era. People may go to the games but the fan base isn't very strong as a whole IMO. If UK has a good basketball season everyone will forget football. I do think that UK should go for new, exotic uniforms and a crazy offense.

But as far as support, or the size of the fan base, UK does pretty well.

Let's compare them to Miami, a good prgram with an average at best fan base. When Miami has a horrible coach they force the AD to fire them. They fly banners, refuse to go to games, and do not allow that man to keep coaching. UK fans do nothing. At Alabama or somewhere else who knows what they'd do? And maybe that is a product of winning, but to me Kentuckians just do not value football enough. Look at the facilities at many high schools in KY. The public just doesn't care IMO.

I don't doubt the rabidness of Miami's fans being more intense than that of UK's. But again, Miami is a traditional power that is accustomed to success. UK? Not even close. Let me put it this way...for all the horrible football UK fans have been through--and believe me, it's been horrible--it's impressive that they have a large fan base IMO.
November 13, 201114 yr UK needs to go unconventional and hope to get lucky with a decent recruiter, a guy that runs a scheme that can thrive or someone with some serious NFL pedigree. I, as many have stated, do not see a big name guy with options choosing UK over a school with similar financial resources but better football pedigree. Most football coaches that want to compete for titles stay away from basketball schools- they do not want to compete for facilities and dollars with an established program like UK's basketball program. I remember a few years back that Parcells said he would have taken the UK job, but the Cowboys came calling. Go see if he would be interested again. See if Charlie Weis wants to be a head guy again- he could recruit and he would not have the limitations of Notre Dame's academic standards to get players to Lexington. Go with Rich Rod or how about Chris Ault up in Nevada. You could look up Pat Hill at Fresno. I like Leach, but he has ties to Mumme, so I can not see that ever happening. Be the first to offer Gus Malzahn. You could go into the lower levels of the NCAA and find a guy, too. All Craig Bohl has ever done is win at North Dakota State. Mark Farley from Northern Iowa is a great coach as well. You could go real crazy and check out Tony Annese at Grand Rapids Community College- he runs a system that most teams have never seen before.

November 13, 201114 yr If its offense you want, former Cat Chris Hatcher is piling up the points at Murray State and has turned them around.

Anyone else agree? That's the bottom line. You nailed it with this post. I have been saying that all along. Untill the UK admin puts out the $$$ for a big name coach that can go out and get SEC caliber athletes/football players (and please no mone say that there are more than 2, maybe 3 SECt alent type players on this team) then UK will never win in the SEC. People can chisle that in stone. Again, it's the "Curse of the Bear". More powerful than the Red Sox "Babe" curse or the Cubs "billy goat" curse. Of course, the BoSox finally broke through so maybe sometine in the next one hundred years ??
